Perhaps "yeah being a homeless teenager is easy" would have been a better wording, as it omits any notion that a non-homeless teenager has it harder, but he is indeed defending the idea of the kid simply not going home, which is ridiculous

I would too. Comparing two things and saying one is better/worse absolutely does not invalidate the one which the person is claiming is not as bad. If I said "I would rather have herpes than AIDS", I'm not invalidating herpes, but rather saying that I think AIDS is the worst of the two worlds.
