Long-term jobless 'could face compulsory manual labour'

I Really hope this happens
I've been unemployed for awhile now and even I see this as a good idea.
This is counterproductive. The vast majority of people on welfare aren't freeloaders and something like this is just going to take time away from them that they would usually be spending either getting an education, helping friends and family, or searching for a job.
This scheme is specifically designed to target freeloaders. The Government recognises that a lot of people have been/are being made redundant, so they need benefits. They're just trying to weed out the people who deliberately live on benefits because they're too lazy to work.
Last time I was unemployed it was for about 9 months, had 2 short trial jobs in that time and both failed.
It is quite difficult to get settled into a job you can exceed at, let alone actually find a job you can excel at and settle in given the current economic climate.

Agreed. I've been unemployed (save a few shitty freelance projects) for roughly 4 months now and I hate it. But I'm at the early end of a career that relies on having put the years in and getting industry experience. If I just settle for the first job at Tesco's that comes my way, that's my career fucked. For the sake of an extra 2-3 months searching.
It's easy to sit back and shit all over people on the dole when you're sat on the other side of the fence.
I like the idea that they're going to create artificial jobs for people to help them, but I hate the governments hardline image with this - all this bullshit "Start playing ball or get out!" makes people feel like crap rather than getting the help alot of them need.
I was on welfare for 8 months until I managed to get a job with local government. I wasn't experienced - and couldn't get the experience needed to get most of the jobs available (Which weren't many). It was extremely depressing, but I didn't have as much bad luck as some of my friends.
Tories - cut the bullshit vote winning "All of you are scum, if you don't get a job you're a dead weight on society!" its (Mostly) lies, it's dumb and it makes you look bad, especially when you're cutting 500,000 jobs like the one I'm doing now.
I like the idea, but i don't agree with people are on long term benefits because they can't be bothered to work, i've been on jobseekers before i have a job now but it isn't easy getting a job at the moment i mean its easy enough applying for the jobs and making a good CV but getting them to call you back or respond can be near impossible for a lot of jobs.
The tories aren't making it any easier i mean i agree spending needs to be cut but i think they're going overboard on some things and also aren't telling us the big picture what they're doing behind closed door's.
There are people out there who simply refuse to work because they leach off of welfare, compensation etc.
There are also massive amounts of people that use these benefits so they don't have to lose their homes, electricity, or go bankrupt. Judging the entire program based on a few who are abusing it is stupid.
Even though this is effectively job-seeking motivation, I despise the fact that those bloody Tories are being so hardball about it. Honestly, i'm starting to believe that this Coalition Government doesn't even include the Lib Dems... The Liberal Democrats got into bed with the wrong party, that's what's happened here, the Tories being like a dominatrix, wearing the trousers in the partnership.
Cool, does that mean we can deport all the third world immigrants now?

Any government would have cut jobs, You can't blame the Tories for it, Blame Labour if anyone for fucking this up in the 1st place
Here's how welfare should work. Assign people a welfare councillor (like a probation officer; and before you bitch about the cost, consider that each one will be able to have hundreds of clients as there are only monthly meetings) that can give the person on welfare tips about finding jobs, enrolling them in job fairs, finding apprenticeships for them, shit like that. The welfare councillor will also make sure that the person is either looking for work, enrolling in some type of schooling, or using their benefits for a good cause such as to keep their house or support their family.
If you want welfare, you go to your monthly 2-or-3-hour meeting with the councillor. It'll weed out many of the freeloaders and won't be a horrible idea like the OP's article presents
Well it seems the government are doing something about the people who have decided that work "isn't for them". But unfortunately, paying them below the minimum wage will most likely open the government up to criticism and/or lawsuits.
Ahem, I do believe their benefits is their pay.
Why pay them anything for doing community service?

Hmmm... Didn't look at it that way.
Good thing they're doing here. Hell, that's what Holland does too. You get a certain amount of time to find a job you'd like. Can't find one? The government will assign you one!
what if your foreign or deformed or a woman or gay you can't exactly do manual labour then.

While I certainly didn't vote for Labour, the economic crisis is not their fault. Also, Labour would have probably spent money to prevent government job losses rather than get rid of such a huge amount of public sector workers.
All I'm saying is that I like the plan, but I don't like the execution so far.
I don't like this idea, while I agree that it's not right for people to just rely on benefits and not bother trying to find a job...I don't think it's right to punish those who just seem to get no responses due to lack of experience.
So, if you're unemployed for say six months, you're given compulsary labour like you're a criminal or something, and how do you find your career then when you're spending so much time picking up litter or something? Sure, picking up litter's going to help people gain "essential work skills"? Who the fuck will be impressed with that on a CV? Basically the tories just want to punish people for not having jobs, end of. If this was targeted at people who'd been on jobseekers for years despite being perfectly able to work then I could understand a little more, but with this economic situation long term unemployment is getting unfortunately very common.
Sure some people are dicks who suck money from the government, but some of us are just unlucky with the current economic system. I think it's unfair to treat us like we've committed a crime. I don't want to be a jobseeker forever, I want some real money and to lose the annoying stigma I feel when people hear I am unemployed. I'm not a fucking criminal though and I do not respect a government who wants to treat us like scum just because *some* people are being dicks.
This won't effect me personally as by the time it's through (if it does go through) I'll be out of this country...I just really hate these conservative policies.

I'm sure they'll have exceptions for people getting an education

They're making you work for what they're paying you, I don't see how this is bad. Don't think of it like community service as you aren't payed for that, really you're just working for the government.
I was extremely happy with this until I realized it was in the UK and not the US. The US needs to implement this. Damn freeloaders with 20 kids...
how is this any differnt to what they do allready
they send you on a 13 week course to "help" you find a job ( eg sit you infront of a computer and make you take a useless test that means nothing and then try and force you to do a learn direct level 1 ict course when you have a BTEC national diploma ( level 3) IT thing) and then stick you on a work placement that has nothing to do with what you want to do ( eg one person in my group was in for media and radio, they stuck him on a night porter at a hotel...)
and force people like me who realllly want to get a job to do crap stuff that takes up all your time so it makes it harder for you to get a job, also another note i got sent to the place for admin and IT, they stuck me in a warehouse, not untill i complained like hell did they get off there arses and get me a admin placement (which to be fair to them was good and i carried on vol'ing there when my 13 weeks were up) and that concludes my experience of the job centre so far
/rant
if I remember right, the unemployment rate is on the rise here in Finland.
jobless weirdos/junkies and somalis here and there, and they all get the welfare benefits. I hope I don't get into trouble finding a job after i'm done with schools and shit
in new zealand if you're on social welfare for long enough they find you a job to do for 6 months and if you dont do it they stop giving you money.
That's bullshit. My mum's been on "social welfare" for the last 3 years. They bitch at her about getting a job and she just says "oh it's really hard finding one" and they lay off.
suddenly, janitors, janitors, everywhere
