Hold onto your butts, this is gonna get hairy - Eurogamer announces their "GOTY"

I don't wanna come off pretentious, but everyone who's saying Fez was a generic indie platformer are missing the point of the game and why all critics are rating it so high. The indie platformer part of Fez is just the very outer shell, the big part is this huge underlying puzzle made up from a bunch of tiny pieces of text and symbols scattered trough the whole game that everyone who's played the game was spending a bunch of time trying to solve together. I haven't played it myself so I haven't been fully exposed to the puzzle myself, but from what I've seen and heard, this whole puzzle thing makes Fez a pretty fucking huge and incredible thing. Everyone isn't raving on about Fez because it's an indie retro platformer, everyone's been raving on about it because it provides a challenge and experience in a way that no other game does.
Everything about that game is terrible though.
I think Journey was my indie game of the year, amazing art style and a cool concept really came together to create a memorable experience. Fez's gameplay and puzzles didn't have me anywhere near as immersed as Journey.
Journey wasn't an indie game.

IDK guys, Dishonored was great but I felt Deus Ex: Human Revolution nailed that genre much better.

Nobody funded it except them (as in like no companies funded). Sony just publishes it on the PS Store.
They didn't detract from my enjoyment of the game. I want to see more in the universe; there's tons of set-up for more material.
would be amazing if they expanded what you can be too and allowed you to be pure magic, assassin, or a heavier character
bitches please

Really? Fez? I think they just wanted to be different from those giving Journey GOTY.

Fucking ungrateful hipsters
Dishonored or Far Cry
actual GOTY contenders
I liked Dishonored, but Far Cry far exceeds it as GOTY material.

gaaaah you beat me to it
i still can't over how Phil Fish has the nerve to rip off cave story's art style, and then say that all japanese games suck. someone needs to give this guy a kick in the nuts
This is 'murica why are you bringin' up euro-peans
seems like more people in this thread dislike the creator more than the game jeez
Planetside 2 should have gotten GOTY.
seems like more people in this thread dislike the creator more than the game jeez
Yeah, because the creator is more pretentious than the game he made.
If you want to know about Fez just watch Indie Game the Movie
you'll earn knowledge about the game and a deep hatred for the hipster asshole that made it!
that guy looks like jack black with glasses.
Wow this developer seems like a royal ass. Its annoying to see people so fucking cocksure about shitty ideas. Even if this game isn't a huge pile of trash, [it is though] it goes against other contenders that should win GOTY no problem. I love me some Dishonored, but I see it has its faults, but Far Cry looked fucking sweet, not to mention The Walking Dead, which I heard was fucking fantastic on so many levels. For this pretentious garbage to win shames Eurogamer.
I remember back when there was this big deal about Roger Ebert saying that vidya games can't be art. I thought he was being an ass about it, but ultimately art is in the eye of the beholder so whatever.
The gaming industry as a whole got understandably offended and vehemently defended games as art.
And funnily enough, these indie games like Fez, which are becoming more about visuals and soundtracks and emotions and ideas and consequentially less about gameplay (which is what ultimately defines a game) are basically pandering to people like Ebert who think that games can't be art.
In the effort to try to create an artistic videogame these indie devs like Fish are making their projects based around all sorts of stuff and letting the gameplay fall where it may, essentially moving away from the classification of game in order to be accepted as art. It's sad.

Just because it has ~hidden secrets~ doesn't make it a good game. It needs gameplay. Halo 2 had a whole ARG but that didn't make the game any more or less fun.

But the puzzle IS the game, that's what the whole point of the game is. The actual platformer part of Fez is like the co-op in Battlefield 3, it's only a small part of it and you can't say that the whole game is shit just because that one part of it is bad.

depends on whether you're willing to sacrifice story for the sake of a more unique aesthetic I guess
Max Payne 3. FTL. X-Com. The Walking Dead. Borderlands 2. Far Cry 3
Those are all excellent and amazing games that I feel will just be forgotten or not praised enough for how fucking amazing they really are.

Dishonoured had a good story.
It was good in how it was told, and that you had to go looking for it.
Aka, the Heart.
You can hear, learn, and see so much about the world and story of the game through that thing, as much as through anything else in the game world. The plot wasn't incredible, but it was well portrayed with some characters that really gave some life to the world and that should be appreciated.
Not to mention the worlds very lore was present in it's art and design which supports plot.

Shame Borderlands 2 had to shoehorn tons of shitty internet humour to try and be funny, though. The writing was definitely a LOT weaker then the first game.
fez owns
people who disagree: haven't played it, don't own a 360, wanted to hate it in the first place, somehow think that you need to like the developer in order to enjoy the game

It had lots of references and memes as well, it was filled with them. Some of these were just more topical and obvious, and a couple referenced touchy subjects like Minecraft and MLP and its suddenly so horrible.

There was more than just a few references to Minecraft and MLP, most of the jokes consisted of memes and most of them were already outdated memes. Using memes as a basis for jokes in a video game is pretty much the laziest and worst thing a writer can do.
