Update: There are a now-confirmed five dead and 40-plus injured (including a rumored paralysis). We'll bring you any major updates as they occur. Editor's Note: Labeling this an engineering accident was short-sighted and the post has been updated to reflect that fact. -j.l.
Update 2: Many Gizmodo commenters have duly noted that audience members who were not injured in the collapse are running toward the accident. Even seconds after this disaster unfolded, there were brave men and women sprinting toward potential danger to help others.

Too bad this was not in Iowa, with Michele Bachmann
I noticed there were about 2 people or so in a safe spot near the edge.. Hopefully the worst they got was shock and a headache at the least. But then again I can't really see what else was there when the thing was completely down.
But still, I can't imagine how it would have been just outside the impact area.
Built to last, huh?
Because a stage that's designed to be taken down and then trucked from city to city is made to last right?

Obviously not. 4 people died.
Goddamn, that was hard to watch.
That's fucking terrible... it looks so unreal.

What does that have to do with anything?
Built to last, huh?
Dude it is a stage, it is a temporary set up. Plus a huge storm system with winds like that does not help.
Thats horrible.
My condolences to the families of those who died.
Good god, that's awful. Must have been terrifying

They should've gotten everyone out of there when the huge winds and storms started up.

The wind started up REALLY fast. I remember it just came through like a tornado last night.

I was reading another article about this, they took extra precautions due to the storm that was incoming. However they didn't expect the storm to have 60-70MPH winds, it kinda just hit them.
I've been though storms like that before, it is pretty clam then out of nowhere the wind just picks up giving you little time to react.
I mean it is a fucking accident, what do you guys expect. No one expected that thing to fall. But this is when facepunch comes in with their expert civil engineering backgrounds and stage construction backgrounds and they could have prevented all this IF ONLY they where there. ONLY.
Also there has been hundreds of concerts that take place during storms. People don't want to cancel or leave because they paid for tickets, it isn't unusual. This was just a freak accident.

It was a rigging failure. The speakers didn't look anchored and probably banged up against the vertical truss, knocking any loosely connected bolts. Someone probably finger tightened the bolts holding the truss pieces together, and then forgot to tighten them with a wrench. I've seen it before many times but the stage was never put to the test like this was. If there had been a better rigging job, this wouldn't have happened.
I believe this was a Mid-America Sound gig. This is coming from an insider in the Audio Visual industry.

The more posts I see from you, the more I hate you. Especially in the Seal Team 6 thread.
Proud of the people who started running towards it to help.
I live about 10 miles south of Indianapolis. The storms were crazy, wind blew like hell. All of the events at the state fair today were cancelled.

Yes that loose bolt was clearly visible in the video.
The repeated use of the words probably and the only footage being a youtube video oc course is of no importance to the flawlessness of your expertise.
My cousin was there. I'm very thankful that she is alright.
Wow, 16 disagrees, Facepunch really hates your cousin.
"Do what you feel day"
Seems like the technicians don't feel like being blamed.

I live about 10min away from the structure, when i heard it we were just coming home, we passed it and my mom commented about how packed the place always is, this is so sad.
holy shit that sucks man.
My condolences to the people who died or were injured. My friend's older sister is the bass player in Sugarland, the band that was about to perform. I'm glad she's alright.
Looks like that crowd surfer got smashed :v:
Those screams are terrifying
