I don't get how people enjoy RP, most of the "serious RP" servers seemed to be filled with people walking around doing absolutely nothing because the dumbasses who run the server make it impossible to make any money.
Most of the time it just seemed to be loads of people running up the stairs on the nexus getting hit with stun batons.

Why does GMod tend to attract egotistical pricks?
Uh, almost every game does that?

might be because role-playing isn't about making money.
though a lot of the GMod "RP" servers are pretty shitty. GMod isn't built for immersive role-playing (eg hard-coded limits on chat message length)
LS3 was an abomination, it took the fun out of it in the name of realism.
You can start complaining about realism once the planets are correctly scaled and spaced apart.
I remember the alpha stargates with LS2, it was incredible, just having enough power to keep the gate open for a few seconds while your stations shielding failed under an attack.
realism in a sandbox game is retarded, that's exactly why I hated wiremod. Too complex and limited
but at the same time, a complex wire system can do something no normal build can do.
Remember GMOD tower?
So sad what has happened to the GMod community.
War of the Servers (Or whatever the great movie was called) needs to be redone with all the new elements like DDoS-ing and bad stuff like that. Wire crashers, whatever.
What did happen to GMOD tower anyways?

Considering it cost money to posses anything useful in RP I'd say money is pretty damn important when it comes to enjoying it.
Isn't there legal action being taken against the guys who make these DDOSing programs?

Wiremod would have been great if I could have understood what the hell everything did, but whenever I asked someone what to do with it they'd never explain it properly, especially that twat who told me it was "just simple maths", yeah thanks that really helps.
Is this the beginning of the end?

Wire is only as complicated as you make it.
I never delved into e2 and made some pretty robust analogue systems.

Check it out by yourself.
Last time I casually played GMod (For like weeks, not 1 week randomly derping around in DarkRP servers) GMod Tower was up. Looks like it was a loooong time ago.
spacebuild would have stayed great if they tried to keep the system comprehensible and focused on stability with all of the other addons
isn't there any way to protect yourself or your company from ddos attacks? seems kinda weird to me that one thing like this can end up costing a company that much money and nothing had been done to prevent it

By what they say in the article I'd say they are protecting themselves to some degree, but somethings get through regardless.

Bandwidth is typically charged in a "pay as you go" fashion in most countries (at the DC / ISP level). In Australia this is even worse due to the fact the infrastructure is lagging behind and the fact it costs so much extra over there.

so they're not fully protecting themselves or what

Certainly looks like it. When the people who have devoted (or wasted) most of their lives to the community are the ones making the aimbots and DDoS scripts, it can only go downhill.
I've been hearing about Stan and Seth's obsession with aimbots and DDoS scripts since at least 2007. They're the only people in the GMod community I can name.
The first time I saw a sudden surge of ddosing was the first Pulsar Effect server, which some other community stole the gamemode and they got into a fight and etc, they started ddosing Pulsar Effect until it was forced to shutdown and release the gamemode for free, and since then its been ddos everywhere, i'm sure it happened before, but that's the first time I took an actual notice of it happening more then often
I still run my server (its been 2+ years?). I dont play gmod anymore due to my lack of time.
Gmod is still alive, and so is Wiremod modding community.
Id love to have DDOS'ers Gmod banned.

And the 10 year olds buying the tools. And pretty much raping the ones who want to just play the game, mostly the ones who remember the "good times" (Back when people actually cared to do fun shit and not to RAMPAGEFEST 2012 FUCK YOU TOO FAGGOT)
Meh, GMod needs some new quality servers. I am sure that there are a few but these are a pain to find.
Isn't there legal action being taken against the guys who make these DDOSing programs?
The main problem is that it is very hard to find out who is behind a DDoS attack and prove it.
morgen feel free to explain if you want to i am not going to hide that i am clueless
DDoS is why I stopped playing GMOD. If a server gets a bit popular it will get DDoSed from all directions and it's just not fun anymore.
wiremod ruined gmod
Gmod also got far too tedious where every single server needed you download a ton of addons and most of the time it just showed up as Errors.
The problem is that many of the community-run servers don't have a simple pack to download that has everything the server runs, if I was to manage a server the least I'd do for my new players is give them everything they need instead of telling them to fuck off and fetch it themselves.
Always had fun improvising crappy looking "trash" cars and what not, Serverwide Rube Goldberg devices, spontaneous fun.
Then came wire and I couldn't be aresed to learn a "scripting language" (wire modules) just to leep up with building.
Nowadays I mainly play gamemodes.
I actually crave the vanilla experience from Gmod, and I do run it like that minus a few useful stools and props. I also fucking hate wire.

It's very difficult to drop rapidly incoming packets from several different IP's at the same time, usually it's just best to disconnect the server and wait for the ddos to halt.

We're actually working on re-hosting and improving it. We've started a closed beta to test bug fixes, etc. (which you can follow on the website and our Trello to-do list). Within the first few hours of setting up the private server, we were attacked, it's quite sad to see the current state of the GMod community.
My biggest issue with the new Gmod community, is the complexity and constant re-downloading of SVN dependent files. Lookin' at you wire, you pointless dumpy poop.

I swear to god if people are actually actively taking the time to seek out a private server to ddos it for no apparent reason (unless they were banned from gmod tower, and that's highly unlikely) then something seriously needs to done.
