That's a lot of people and I feel bad for every individual case. Surprising because I would think if people were that bigoted, it'd be happening here but these cases are one of a hundred thousand. When I say that's a pretty good ratio, I am not discrediting any of these stories. They're all awful tragedies but the reality is people are going to be killed when they're different from everyone else.
Really dude?
I'm not dismissing it. I'm being realistic. Now you can continue making me to the bad guy for saying what no one wants to hear or you can accept the reality of the situation that there are bigoted assholes out there and posting on Facepunch/Tumblr/Twitter isn't going to do a goddamn thing to stop it.
Do you know what actually doesn't do a goddamn thing to stop it? Pretending that things just magically get better over time, and that it's not the hard work of activists that change things.
Learn some actual history on how Civil Rights Campaigns work before you go acting like this shit just magically happens.
Also thanks for taking that snippet out of my post where I'm supporting TS/CD people.
Oh yes, the disclaimer of "Guys! I really do support trans people! Just *insert bigoted opinion here*"
But hey, I guess in a few hundred years we can *maybe* hope that I and people like me can go out for milk without worrying about getting beaten.
They're all awful tragedies but the reality is people are going to be killed when they're different from everyone else.
I understand what you mean by this, but it does come off as really assholeish and awful
Most we can do is educate people about gender identity and maybe in a hundred or so years, things like this won't happen but the social justice blogs on tumblr aren't going to make a difference, Patricia Hernandez' articles on Kotaku and bitching on twitter won't either.
You're sort of right. Bitching on twitter does nothing but articles on big gaming websites like kotaku can help to further educate a larger audience.

Have there been any recent Civil Rights campaigns that have gained anything by sending death threats to people who Tweet questionable stuff about gender roles?
I support the movement entirely, but honestly this whole Twitter thing is an embarrassment.

Explain to me how the fuck anything I said up there was bigoted.
Also that whole "go out for milk without worrying about getting beaten" is bullshit. I know plenty of TG people throughout conservative California and Arizona where hate crimes occur quite often. Never have I heard of a CD/TG person getting beaten/killed and I think that is quite a good representation of the majority. It happens, it's a tragedy but it rarely happens and people need to be educated about what transgendered people are.
Most people just know them as "shemales" and that they've "seen them in porn once or twice". People need to learn it is not a fetish but an entire lifestyle.
Remember, I live in the state where lawmakers are trying to tie public bathroom usage to the gender on your birth certificate so you would think I'd say it's a total pandemic here, but it's not anywhere near one.

to be fair, its an embarrassment from both sides. As someone who runs pax he should have been WAY more professional about all this. Especially when he goes and puts that article up of emails between him and Sophie in which he finds ONE trans person who doesn't think he's being a bit of an asshole and then goes SEE GUYS IM NOT BEING AN ASSHOLE SHE SAID SO I WAS CORNERED AND BULLIED!! (though the last bit i can understand him feeling that way)

There's always going to be extremists who fuck it up for everyone. Though sometimes they are the people who get it the most attention.

sorry

As great as that is(seriously hearing that come from Arizona that makes me ecstatic to hear with that stupid bathroom bill you mentioned) this is still pretty anecdotal. Nearly every transperson I know in Nebraska has been threatened at least once.
-snip-
i'll be sure to tell the last part to the next person who kills someone due to transphobia
That transphobia is actually a thing is disgusting but that doesn't excuse the death threats to this person.
Edit:
Man apparently I have just fucked up getting my point across all day today
No, I meant the last line could apply to either the radical extremeists sending him death threats or to transphobes who DO kill people.
Sorry for the confusion
Okay, disregard what I said then.

No not at all

Haha thats alright
Why is this thread still going
it wasn't for 24 minutes until you showed up, so there was a lull.
Well there's still 60 people viewing so hush
You know what would be great? If we just developed a whole new set of words to make fucking sense of all of this stuff.
Wikipedia defines 'female' as, "the sex of an organism, or a part of an organism, which produces non-mobile ova (egg cells)," and states that the word 'female' is derived from the Latin word 'femina' which means 'woman'.
Wikipedia also states on the page for 'woman' that, "A woman /ˈwʊmən/, pl: women /ˈwɪmɨn/ is a female human."
So right now I'm fucking confused because 'female' is the sex of an organism that is not up for debate, whereas woman apparently isn't (and is instead your 'gender'), however 'female' is defined by the word woman, and women are apparently females. How about we just come up with a whole new set of words so that everyone is happy and there's no bloody confusion because right now I feel like a great deal of animosity is resulting as a result of people being honestly bewildered about simple definitions nowadays.

Or.. we could just say that
Female = sex
Woman = gender

Sorry to tell you but the damage was done some hundreds of years ago when these words were determined. 'Woman' and 'female' HAVE been interchangeable for hundreds of years because they've meant the same damn thing. The current definitions are still linked due to that etymology and it's going to take a long time (if ever) to break that link (and I'm not even sure that link should be broken simply because things are a lot easier if we have rigid definitions).
Make up some new words for the other possible combinations of how you feel mentally (male or female) and how you actually are genetically (male or female) and NONE of this confusion will exist.

Trans people regularly make up new words and pronouns for this purpose, they get ridiculed for it, largely because there are so many pronouns to learn instead of just a consensus on one or two good ones.

Well I think anybody who ridicules them for that is a fucking moron because having well defined definitions with clear boundaries makes the world a much simpler place and a lot of negativity can straight up be avoided as no confusion can be present in such a case. Good on those that come up with, and use those new words (now somebody's just got to decide which ones are gonna stick and be the standard).

Gabe's a powder keg, the people Gabe got the attention of are powder kegs, and Patricia Hernandez is sitting behind a sheet of blast glass with a grin large enough to slice her head in half.
Biological females have vaginas.
You can identify with feminine traits and you can dress and act as a woman but it makes you a trans-woman. Not a woman.
I fully support the trans-community and it sucks that people are really born as the wrong gender but this shit is getting out of hand.
These are my thoughts exactly.
Trans people regularly make up new words and pronouns for this purpose, they get ridiculed for it, largely because there are so many pronouns to learn instead of just a consensus on one or two good ones.
Making up your own pronouns seems like a way to establish yourself as some other new gender instead simply switching your gender identity.
I thought transgendered people for the most part were interested in changing genders and embracing the pronouns of their gender of choice.

I think some of them don't want to move towards either end of the gender spectrum, I believe they call it genderqueer.
[sp]I call it heresy.[/sp]
I just dont understand why people cant understand why others dont want to accept it. Its not given in society that you have to accept everything.
hey alex_delarge you should find us all some nice george carlin quotes on the subject, or perhaps you have a different philoso-comedian you use for transgender issues
I just dont understand why people cant understand why others dont want to accept it. Its not given in society that you have to accept everything.
People have a right to their opinions, and we also have the right to not like people who don't accept others because they're different.
