A decade after 9/11, Police Departments are increasingly militirized
-National guard lends helicopters to departments that can't afford their own. I have never even heard of national guard ground forces being used in a routine raid.
-SWAT teams are used in increasing numbers because they are specifically trained to serve risky search warrants. That training makes them less likely to kill people. Yes, people still die, but it is national news when it happens. Contrary to popular belief, they are generally pretty capable, and their priority is the preservation of human life.
-Honestly, who cares if officers get rifles in their cruisers? They saw a problem where officers lacked the means to counter suspects in body armor, and have generally resolved it by issuing better rifles to officers. What part of this equation somehow offends anyone?
-Police departments do not have tanks. They have armored vehicles similar to what you would see hauling money around. They do, on rare occasions, get military surplus vehicles like M113's or the like, but they are not tanks, and they aren't even remotely similar to tanks. Surplus transport helicopters (My county has like five UH-1's and two pilots for some bizarre reason) and aircraft aren't armed. How is this being militarized? The fixed wing aircraft are used for traffic monitoring and SAR operations. Helicopters are used for high speed chases, SAR, and searching for suspects. None of this indicates an increase in militarization.
This article is stupid as hell.
Someone on FP who actually understands police? Finally.
I agree, although, I've never even seen police with armored vehicles in the places I've been. Except the bridges in NY, but they have Humvees, in 2001 I do remember seeing a Bradly.

The armoured vehicles are usually reserved for SWAT to use during high-risk operations.
You misspelled militarized, and I find that hard to believe when you never see them armed with more than plastic pistols (and usually less) and some random lunatic can walk into a police station with an automatic and kill half the men there.
I hope America does turn into a police state, and the first people brutalized are the people who want to complain about police brutality, on TV, and call for cops to resign, (Example) when this guy gets the shit beat out of him, after running out of a court house. Oh yeah, before he ran out, he took a deputy's gun and shot him in the face, killing him.
As his ass got whooped, and rightly so, his family, who was there in the courtroom, acted like he didn't do anything wrong, why did he get such a tune up from the police? Crying and screaming, and fucking Jane Vilez Mitchell saying "This is the clearest case of police brutality I have ever seen" on her little show on CNN
I hope people like that, and all those Gotcha! fuckheads who carry a camera around and provoke police get cracked down on like Al-Qaeda cracks down on women in school
People like that piss me off, and don't deserve to live in a place that offers them ALL the shit that they have BECAUSE of police keeping sub-human scum out of their neighborhoods
Fuck you I want our police to be space marines
I fucking love being safe
Servus Adeptus Protectus, for the will of the Presidentor.
Oh boy, it's another one of these idiots.
Maybe you should have visited some places outside your shitty town/state before thinking the entire country is shit.
We have 310 million people and thousands of towns/cities you know? Not everyone is the same.
Besides, running away from your problems makes you a bitch. What are you going to do when things in your new country turn to shit?
oh look, a self proclaimed "tough guy" who thinks his opinion is the only right one, not saying your completely wrong though, just that last bit
The armoured vehicles are usually reserved for SWAT to use during high-risk operations.
I've been to lots of places where there should be military sector things stored, and even armoured police vehicles (Been in the garage of my city's police department, and we do have a tactical response unit) and never saw any heavily armoured trucks. Just some 06 Blue Tahoes.
My dad bought one :v

Space Marines would be the best police ever.
You just can't fucking lie to them. The intimidation factor is fucking massive.
Breaking into their homes? Do the police not identify themselves when the door goes in?
"This is the police, take off your pants!"
Wow, and China's police IS the military.
All the good arguments have been made, you're just stupid.
Next thing you know they'll be carrying M72 bazookas so the next time they see some bratty teen spraying his tag on a nice wall they can blow him to pieces.
I still find it sad that he moved to CHINA cause his cities police are to strict on him.
I never said that is why I moved to China. I moved to China for college.
China's police has been great on my view so far. They are very nice, they do their job and protect they don't ask and harass anyone.
Waaaaaa.
Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa.
WAAAAAAAAAA!
If it means me going home at night because I kept some random person from putting their hands in their pockets, in which I have no clue if they are a potential threat or not, I'm going to do it.
Oh wait. I already do. A lot.
But oh poor you. You got investigated by the evil police and they abused you so horribly because you would not keep your hands out of your pockets and was told to keep them out. Your rights were so horribly violated.
I'm glad you moved out of the country. Do us a favor and stay out, we have enough cry-babies. :)
When you talk like you're 13 and misinterpret my story you make it sound like I'm some cry baby when I was just giving an example
Yeah, know why the police are nice? Because you are a foreign resident. You bet your ASS if you were ethnic you would be raided for being a dirty captalist
Don't lie.
So he goes to China, a place with over 1.3 billion people, to look for a job.
Amazing logic.
Also what does political tension have to do with the average person, it's just a bunch of old men bitching at each other until a deal is made that makes both sides happy.
Edit:
If he couldn't afford to go to any college/university, why doesn't he just go to a community college and work hard, if you do good enough you'll be able to get into normal colleges a lot cheaper and continue your education.
For college you daft cunt? Your logic is so blunt. You obviously haven't even left the country to see the world for your self instead of being closed minded going by what you hear?
My dad is a director of a shoe company and I go to college in Hong Kong next year. There is a huge difference between Hong Kong and China, but you already know that apparently don't you by what you read and watch on TV?
Your flag says China, as in mainland China, how the fuck were we supposed to know you're in Hong Kong?
How the fuck did you start assuming so much shit before asking?
Now it says you're in America. Are you fucking with me or does FP hate me?
Your flag says China, as in mainland China, how the fuck were we supposed to know you're in Hong Kong?
You sound like some brainwashed piece of shit.

Why are people afraid of armor, anyway? it's not like it helps anyone kill people,it's meant to do the opposite.
slippery slope
a gun protects and kills just like how body armor protects and kills
Except a gun actually does something that's capable of killing.
armor is just... armor.
slippery slope
a gun protects and kills just like how body armor protects and kills
I don't hear of too many cases of people bludgeoned to death by kevlar
slippery slope

You seem to be implying that just because it has armor it has like an automatic grenade launcher or some shit, having an armored vehicle doesn't mean shit other than it's safer for those inside.
When you talk like you're 13 and misinterpret my story you make it sound like I'm some cry baby when I was just giving an example
Everything they did was completely reasonable. You could be on drugs, insane, or even fleeing a crime scene. You could be a paranoid, a druggie, or an irrationally aggressive person. For all they know you have a .38 in your pocket and their goal is to safely diffuse the situation and put you on your way.
By putting your hands in your pockets you were actively threatening their safety. Even a pocket knife can kill easily in unskilled hands, especially when the attacker is motivated by fear or panic.
If you would have followed their directions, it would not have happened.
body armor if used in such a way will make you basically a tank, see the shootings earlier in the thread
Yes, but your original response was specifically about the armored vehicle.
(or we assumed it was considering he was referring to the armored vehicle)
I think when they start using tanks - actual tanks, not armored vans - we can start getting concerned.
Or, you know, they could run him off the road and break it open.
if a criminal acquired an armored vehicle, he would be a killing machine, see that case with the farmer who armored the fuck out of his truck and went postal and it took a bunch of police with assault rifles to finally penetrate it and kill him
well, that was irrelevant, i meant body armor in the first post, rate me bad reading~
But we're talking about why it's bad that POLICE get an armored truck.
