US open to talks on ISIS with Russia after Russian intervention

I'd be perfectly fine with this, anything which brings Russia and the United States back into trusting each other and having some cooperation is fine with me. In the case of Syria it would also bring an end to the refugee crisis if the United States and Russia went about beating the shit out of ISIS and any party against bringing some sense of remaining unity in Syria as well as possibly allowing for Kurdistan to become it's own country to improve regional stability.

Wat
I thought it was a little fitting actually... :(
I would say it's probably more to win back some trust from the US through cooperation in a bid to have some of the sanctions released.
Russia had a military base in Syria since 1972. Russia rakes in great money from contracts with Assad.
I think first and foremost Russia is defending it's income and political ally from getting wiped out.
the funny thing about the narrative in the US right now is that america wanted boots on the ground in 2012, yet when our president wanted to put boots on the ground, congress refused to let him have them, in the recent debate they even brought this up to the candidates, 3 of which opposed boots there and they had to bullshit their way out of it
When did Obama want boots on the ground?
Friends again and in 2 years both invade some poor sap of a country, I wouldn't otherwise care except it might be our country next.
There's literally no way Russia will invade Finland lol, if they do it's pretty much guaranteed WW3
Friends again and in 2 years both invade some poor sap of a country, I wouldn't otherwise care except it might be our country next.
Is this what Finnish people actually believe? Alright, I'll play ball.
Everything your country has we already have, my home state of Minnesota is geologically the exact same as 80% of Finland and we're roughly the same size as your whole country. We're not even a big state, and all your industries are found elsewhere in the US because they have more of whatever you got except for mining, that's something we do here.
There is no strategic benefit for a joint US-Russian operation against Finland.
We already have military contracts with your country and we've been trying to get you to join NATO for decades specifically to fuck with the USSR and now Russia. Your neighbors across the sea are all in NATO, hell, the only countries near you who aren't are Sweden and Russia. Plus, everyone would rush to support Finland if either my country or Russia invaded.
Really I'm struggling to see how the fuck you could even think this aside from some sort of crippling paranoia.
When did Obama want boots on the ground?
Right before he resorted to airstrikes in Syria but after the Syrian army began firing off chemical weapons.
Go look it up, he wanted to deploy thousands of marines to stop the chemical weapons, but congress passed a resolution telling him no combat troops, ultimately instead of wranglig over the specifics of the resolution for loopholes, he resorted to airstrikes
I think the "controversy" part has more to do with supporting Assad than Ukraine.
Even though he needs to go too, I'd definitely take Assad over DAESH.
Even though he needs to go too, I'd definitely take Assad over DAESH.
Yeah Assad needs to go some other way. Not in the middle of all this fuckery, leaving the country in a power vacuum with no one to take the office but some huge fuckface from the military. Especially, especially since the situation in Syria is such that if Assad goes, pretty much whole government goes, along with the highest military chiefs. It'll just break everything.

Hopefully Russia and America get closer.
Kinda miss the days of the early 1940s.

It's all controversial.

Holy shit you actually took his statement literally? Thats amazing

Also we get it you read about the military a few times. That doesn't mean you have to make over elaborate posts in every vaguely military related thread so that you can flaunt your presumed knowledge.
Hasn't Russia been cool with Finland since WW2, when Russia got its land buffer for Leningrad and the Finns kicked out the wehrmacht? Today AFAIK Finland is economically reliant on Russia. Why would there be any problems?
No it isn't.
I didn't think so, but I'm curious, what do Finnish people think of when they ponder their position in global politics?

If you think I'm flaunting my "presumed knowledge" (most of it is simple googling to fact-check what is common fucking sense) then I don't know, whoops? What exactly do you want me to say here? Apologize for getting irritated with stupidity? No.

Personal attacks and irrelevant quips about my avatar are rather poor show.

I'm not asking you to do anything. I simply stated my annoyance at someone who constantly makes asinine posts for no reason other then to flaunt bullshit. Kinda like you say you are!

Well, if you really were interested maybe you should have just sat on the sidelines and watch other finns make comments on the subject and not start to blast armchair general shit in every direction at first encounter.
And no, this isn't what the average finn thinks. This is tye viewpoint of uneducated, paranoid, people and most of those who took civil service or lied about stuff to not go to the army.
Putin is smart enough to not invade Finland because the backlash would be huge, Finland can hold their own pretty well in a fight and as you rightfully said it is of no strategic value.

You really didn't answer my question though, you just said to read the other posts. Maybe if you yourself read them you'd find that they really didn't answer my question either, which leads me to believe Finns don't really think about it too much.

I get really pissed when people in tinfoil hats try to assert that the US government is just waiting to fuck over the rest of the world just because. No reason's ever given, and then saying "oh well now the US and Russia are friends and they're gonna invade small countries now probably us next :(" just really burns my ass.
Don't you worry though because my armchair's reclined perfectly, I can post all day.

I think you were justified in your post. Not to sound like a nob but it seems like he wanted an excuse to make him country seem relevant.
Not gonna lie though, I do partake in the US hegemony/realpolitik tin foil hattery.

Well to be fair, like I said, mostly old people and paranoid nutters are afraid of a russian invasion. The average finn is generally not too bothered with our eastern neighbour because we know that chances of an invasion are so minscule that it simply isn't worth worrying about.
Also, that last sentence is just saddening. If you want you have a intelligent discussion maybe you should refrain from such borderline fedora-talk if you want to be taken seriously.

Oh yeah I should mention that the FDF exists to "maintain a formidable defence", but that doesn't mean that everyone sits at home shaking in their boots and waiting for the tanks to roll over the border.

It's strategically best placed for seeing the northern lights.
Pfft, have you even seen how your country fucked Russia the last time it tried attacking you?
You're more than safe.
That was for the most part because Russia was kinda busy with their war with Nazi Germany and severely under estimating Finnish defenses and weather and only send poorly equipped conscripts that mostly died from cold and hunger.
I don't understand these things well but what stops US or Russian military from just going full Blitzkrieg with tanks and jets and wipe out all ISIS in one powerful sweep?
I don't understand these things well but what stops US or Russian military from just going full Blitzkrieg with tanks and jets and wipe out all ISIS in one powerful sweep?
Because that worked so well in Vietnam
Because that worked so well in Vietnam
The only saving grace for ISIS thus far is the reluctance to put boots on the ground and the agenda to overthrow Assad.
I don't understand these things well but what stops US or Russian military from just going full Blitzkrieg with tanks and jets and wipe out all ISIS in one powerful sweep?
The perspective of fucking shit up even more than it already is, probably. It's not the main reason, but I'm sure it's not that far down the list.
Plus tanks and whatnot doesn't really work that good against the sort of thing that is ISIS or similar insurgency-like groups. Intelligence operations aren't too great, and overall the structure of larger scale military force is way too cumbersome and clunky to effectively engage dispersed groups of resistance. I mean, since Vietnam no one really has developed an effective ways to combat guerilla-attrition tactics.

Counter insurgency?
Brutal and immoral but it worked in south america.

That would require way too much money in case of Syria. Plus I seriously doubt that anyone is that interested.
