• School switches out Textbooks for iPads

Urgh, i hate the idea of using a screen to study.
There's something severely wrong with this. Studying from plain old textbooks is already an optimal method of learning. Replacing them with Ipads or laptops or whatever will hardly improve student efficiency. Do the schoolboards expect the next generation of students to become super-efficient multitasking geniuses that will put the last three hundred years of academia to shame because of this new investment?
My school's planning on going completely paperless and getting everyone tablet computers. I don't see how though, considering we can't even afford a school nurse. This is, as much as you and I hate iPads, very clever. The textbooks will stay in a consistent condition, and there wont be a cock on every second page. It is also easier to carry an iPad than to carry a load of books

I could be wrong, but either way it's still one hell of a cash sink for schools to be investing in.
This is, as much as you and I hate iPads, very clever. What a horrible waste of money.
this is cool. Would be cooler with netbooks (then you could actually type well) but still, p. cool.

All that paper will be saved and it'll help slow the destruction of forests and shit, as well as lighten students' loads. My friend's developing scoliosis because of having to take home so much stuff every day. If it gets worse she can't do sports next year.
Oh god no, this means apple wont stop producing those pieces of crap, schools buy in to this crap to easy :ohdear:
Stop dreaming. It sells like mad. There is no reason to stop producing it.

To be honest I would still choose the textbook. I would rather have a highly expendable cheaper textbook than to have a several hundred dollar expensive IPad. Plus, at the end of the year you would have to return it. I want my own.
Funny story: I was recently kicked out of an Apple Store, for changing all the iPad wallpapers to Windows 7 and Adobe Flash logos.
Games? On a mac? :v:
Steam for Mac, you dolt. Also apps.

I felt ill after reading that :|
I think it's cool and all, but it's dumb for the parents to buy them. While yes it's only $400, do they still need to return them at the end of the year? If they don't have to return them, okay cool it's a good idea. If they do have to return them: The cheapest iPad (16GB Wi-Fi only, no 3g) costs $500. So for $100 more, they could buy an iPad that they could actually keep at the end of the school year. As it is now, the parents are basically still paying for the books, except now they're electronic. While yes it comes on an iPad, which will be convenient, they'd still have to return it, which is still the same as books. If they have to return the iPad at the end of the year, then this is almost pointless. Obviously there's the other benefits of not having 8 books, easier to maintain, etc, however, those are only convenience related things, and this rant is more about money than it is convenience.
Read the article. Your parents pay for it, so it's legally yours.
Nowhere in the article does it say they get to keep it though. So nobody is really sure. Yes they paid for it, but it says they paid for a "technology fee".
The students who are enrolled in St. Catherine’s new sixth- and seventh-grade classes will pay a $400 technology fee, which will go towards the new iPads, Olley said.
Netbooks would have been a better investment; they do more, perform better, cost less, and are pretty much the same size. I've got one, and I can say they would be a great investment for making a shift to electronic teaching aids in schools, I used mine for E-Learning this year, actually.
Jesus christ my school can't even afford paper.
That's nothing, my school blew 30 million on a new building that doesn't even have a proper roof and it leaks all the time. And the school steals tables from other school and they cannot afford to clean the place. We've also been having to bring our own paper in for various subjects. It's also called Failsworth School, and it does indeed fail.
Carrying 60 pounds of text books builds character.. We don't even have enough chairs for all of the students in some classes :/ Try sitting on the floor in English class where you can't even see the teacher let alone the lesson plan.
Ipads for books. Interesting. Like some others here i can't imagine that happening to any school i've been to. But it sure seems nice not having to pack your bag with 7 kilo of paper every day. One thing i don't understand though. How can a school decide this is the way to go so quickly? What if it turns out it doesn't really help. Or makes it worse to concentrate.
Textbooks are better.
I hate Apple. :(
I hate Apple. :(
Why? Because a school decided to use their products? Because they make iPods? Because the 'anti-apple' bandwagon is cool? Because Steve is a controlling bitch? Because they are getting more popular?
What an amazing use of funding :saddowns: How about giving my school some funding, some teachers can't even afford class sets of some worksheets.
Watch as they play games and fuck around with it instead of actually reading during class.
Read the article. Your parents pay for it, so it's legally yours.
Still expensive as shit compared to a textbook.
I wouldn't mind it, my textbooks are actually hurting me from the weight. We barely even go through the books but need them just in case a teacher asks you to open them.
"Death to printed books" - Apple
Still expensive as shit compared to a textbook.
Textbooks can cost a lot, and that times the number of classes you have adds up
