Don't Australian Schools primarily use computers instead of books?
No.
My school has recently started using lap tops, though (I'm in Australia). The whole thing is a little retarded, though because it is difficult to implement them into classes because not everyone has them.
You know apple gives thing for near free to schools because then the kids use them and get brain washed into thinking apple is the GOD OF COMPUTERS!
My whole school system I am part of uses mac's because apple gives them to them for free to near free.
Same at my school, cept there taking them away since apples to god damned cheap.
I did. Its a oversized ipod touch
Yea but then i take a look at the HD apps and i go "woah"
My Experience with the iPad when i first found one:
"Oh cool, now i get to see how big of a failure it is"
"...Ok the book app is cool"
"holy shit this Flight Control map is huge"
"Plants vs Zombies holy shittt it looks so much better on this"
"holy crap labrynth is so funnn on the ipad"
"I want one ho-"
*499$ price tag for wifi version with hardly anything i want on it*
:saddowns:
This sounds like a gimmick. just give them laptops.
Four years ago my school issued macbooks, and I'm on it right now. While it's still mac, it's way better than an iPad. Why don't they just buy the students laptops? They're more functional.
I prefer books. My eyes always hurt after reading boring stuff on computers.
If they made it like a webpage it'd be fucking awesome. instead of going to the index at the back of the book, you just press a link and it takes you there
...why?

I don't understand how the apps on the iPad could be considered High Definition. 1024 x 768 is not a high def resolution.
[editline]01:07AM[/editline]
Yes, I realize I'm nitpicking there.

768p > 720p.
Do the math.
Gotta say this is actually a good use for the iPad. Good idea.
If they're being used solely as textbooks for rich kids this seems like a good idea. However if they plan on using them for things like English papers etc they should have got them laptops with a full keyboard. The iPad may basically be an oversized iPod Touch but it seems like it would make a good electronic textbook, especially with the freedom you get with a touch screen.
[editline]08:38AM[/editline]
To be honest I would still choose the textbook. I would rather have a highly expendable cheaper textbook than to have a several hundred dollar expensive IPad.
Plus, at the end of the year you would have to return it. I want my own.
You return textbooks too
Why didn't they invent the iPad sooner.
Did you ever try it before saying it's a piece of crap?
Under difference circumstances, this argument would be fair.
However, the iPad is indeed an oversized iTouch.

Yeah I can see it working for reading, but for typing? Nah.
Also returning them is a pain in the ass, we have HP laptops we have to return each year, and after being used to having a laptop, summer without one is torture.

The word HD is so overused today it makes me want to stab somebody in the eye everytime i hear it. :argh: The same goes for the xxxp format of describing resolutions. It's fine for describing video, as 720p and 1080p pretty much always stand for 1280x720 and 1920x1080, while it also tells you the video has progressive scan. Using this format for describing monitor resolutions however, is NOT cool.
Oh and 1280*720 is more pixels than 1024*768. See what i mean now?
There's something severely wrong with this.
Studying from plain old textbooks is already an optimal method of learning. Replacing them with Ipads or laptops or whatever will hardly improve student efficiency. Do the schoolboards expect the next generation of students to become super-efficient multitasking geniuses that will put the last three hundred years of academia to shame because of this new investment?
You can't multi-task on an iPad
Funny story: I was recently kicked out of an Apple Store, for changing all the iPad wallpapers to Windows 7 and Adobe Flash logos.
Why do every Apple related threads end up like this. You are acting the same as Apple fanboys now.
That's nothing, my school blew 30 million on a new building that doesn't even have a proper roof and it leaks all the time.
And the school steals tables from other school and they cannot afford to clean the place.
We've also been having to bring our own paper in for various subjects.
It's also called Failsworth School, and it does indeed fail.
My school doesn't teach music, art, drama, history, geography and a few other topics. The teachers openly admit that the school is broke.
Just wait until half the kids forgot to charge it then night before
Holy shit it's Ender's Game
It would have been much better to give them laptops.
Norway does this to anyone in upper secondary school (16, eleventh year of school). They all work great, but we use books too, but those are rented.
The money we pay for the computers are already given to us by the welfare system, every student gets 130 usd, the computers cost 123 usd each year, when we graduate they are ours.
You can't get anywhere without a computer. If you for some reason can't afford it (IE you wasted the money before you were going to pay) the welfare system will most likely pay for it anyways.

most private schools in australia use laptops and have been doing so for years and years

yeah ok. 1280x720 is still bigger than 1024x768
Paper is much better than an iPad. Can you make a aeroplane out of an iPad?
We use notebooks in our school, but I can't see how an iPad could be useful. You can't even write down your notes on it without a proper keyboard.
I wrote this post with a touchscreen and it took about 20 times as long as using pen and paper and using a physical keyboard would have been even faster.
I used an iPad today, and yeah it was pretty cool, but really, there is no need to have them in a school. Pen and paper = easier and cheaper. Now laptops on the other hand...
Hooray for pointless over spending!!!
