And here I was taking the middle ground without even having to, I didn't realize birth certificates were changed upon name change, I thought they just supplemented it with something

Even cisgendered children are aware of it earlier than most people expect. It's just with them it's not nearly as noticeable because to most people it's just normal behavior.
