Georgia boy here, and I love the rebel flag. I don't wave it around all the time, but it's an iconic symbol of the style of the American South.
If that is seriously the only thing you can muster to express your southern pride, I think you need to reevaluate what you think pride is.

It's not a shitty reason, it's an appalling reason. There's a big difference.
Let us pretend for a moment, that slavery never existed in the USA.
Would the South have seceded?
Assuming that slavery never existed in the USA but the south remained agrarian and the north industrial. Yes, it probably would have. Again, regionalism.

Read the fucking declarations of secession for crying out loud! They cite slavery explicitly as the main cause of secession!

Why?
What reason would they have to secede?

Before the conflict, there was a huge cultural difference between the north and the south, not only about slavery. The United States up until that point was two nations in one country.

Southern culture was mostly built upon the foundations laid by the institution of slavery.
Honestly, practically their entire society was built around it.

I've heard this said so many times yet I never understand how it somehow points towards secession. Literally every single country in the world, including almost all micro-nations, have multiple regions/cultures. That does not somehow mean that there is a reason to secede. Should Southern Italy split off from the North because they are more agrarian? Should Bavaria secede from German due to a having a different and unique culture? Hell, you can go into an individual city and find two different and sometimes opposing cultures. Should the South Side of Chicago split off because they support the White Sox? Just because there are differences in culture and/or way of life does not mean that a country should be split along those lines.
This is ignoring, of course, the fact that the South's "culture" revolved around owning people.

I didn't say it points toward it. I'm saying that it greases the wheels to make it moving.

It's a meaningless comment. As I said, every nation on Earth through all of human history has had different cultures and lifestyles. Sure, make note of it, but it is not any sort of an excuse for secession.
