Difference is all those scientists had some sort of reason to believe what they believed.

So the choices presented here are
A) A species spent a minimum of [del]4 200[/del] 4.2 years travelling here (or moved faster then light, which would meant they would be stupidly more advanced then us) using tech we can only dream on and massive amounts of resources. On coming here they make some scribbles in a field and then nothing else.
B) Some people with good fantasy bring some planks, maybe a gps and some string into a field and create some seriously impressive images, but still made by people. Now, personally i do believe there is life out there somewhere. The universe is massive, it feels way to egotistic to say we are the only intelligent life out there.
On a side note, Anyone here read Deepness by Vernor Vinge ? It present a scenario where a more advanced species end up spying on a less intelligent species. Basically, sit in a hidden asteroid and monitor everything. [I]If[/I] there is a more intelligent species in the system, that feels much more plausable scenario then scribbling in the dirt every now and then
I do hope people continue making crop circles though, they look cool as hell, but i know people make them

Educating yourself is one of the most amazing things we have today. We have the ability to learn about nearly anything whenever we want. Why would anyone chase after a pipedream when we have so much more credible theories with basis in reality? I'm all for creativity, but don't mix it in with science.

Small correction, closest star is 4.2 light years away, not 4200.
In fact almost all the stars you see at night are closer than 4000 light years.

Well if they were really intelligent they would probably realize that maybe they should try something else.
This is all speculation anyway, and the way we do science isn't speculation.

It's just that because some (many) of these are confirmed as frauds, I so strongly doubt an advanced form of life would choose a method like this to make contact when it would actually REQUIRE that they are not discovered after making it. You don't ring the doorbell and then hide.

Not arguing whether it was aliens or not since that is, as people have already said, almost certainly not the case. But considering our own attempts at communicating with aliens such as the above image (Voyager's golden disc recording) it seems like something so seemingly convoluted could indeed be possible as a form of communication. Of course writing in our crops seems an oddly convoluted way of going about it but that's beside the point.

I don't believe crop circles are made by aliens but if you've seen a cattle mutilation then you know someone or something had to have done it. When I was a couple of years old a cousin of mine outside of my city had all his cows mutilated and took pictures of them. They were missing their reproductive organs and looked like they had been burned off with a laser. I'm also not saying aliens did it. All I know is something did it.
