Obviously not so successful anymore.
which publisher has published the most, and biggest grossing games ever?
first thing that comes to mind is ea or activison.
if one of those drops under, shit's going to change for the worst
I hope you realize that this can apply to literally ANY developer under a publisher.
Development teams are fucking hell during crunch time.
Except EA makes the devs do crunch time 24/7
Yeah, fuck all of those developers who want to make great games.
I hope they all lose their jobs because hurr durr rip westwood i wish all games were like valve
Except we never said the devs should loose their jobs, just EA which is forcing them to do pretty stupid shit with their games just because it was OK in one game, nothing more.

Those words are pretty fucking flat considering they were using tactics in order to loot money from idiots, like monster chugging ADHD 14 year olds, with things like very insanely retarded DLC.

EA ran themselves PURELY like a money making business, not a game publisher, and tried to replicated what was good. It was successful because of that but quickly people saw through this. If you treat the industry like that you're going to get shit results. The money is meaningless because, fucking honestly, you don't understand WHY games are successful, you only look at what WAS successful, and try and duplicate the results poorly.
Just because one game had a good cover system doesn't mean you should add a cover system, 2 guns, regen health, and thousands of micro-transactions into EVERY game. (Not saying they literally did, but that's hardly the point)
Don't EA own the System Shock IP?
To answer my own question, yes, they do. For this reason I hope EA dies because they're doing fuck-all with it, and whatever they would do could never live up to SS1/2
Yet their stocks seem to increase in value compared to last year, and it does look like it's on a rise.
Nothing compared to what it was in 2007-2008 though.

I bet everyone from Activision is partying now
Best case scenario would be for EA's stocks to decline further until their upper management smartens the hell up and tries some different stuff, leading to a few new IPs (kinda like 07-09 had with Dead Space and Mirrors Edge) or at least the abandonment of some of their shittier practices (Dumb pricing and DLC, microtransactions in games they have no business being in, half-baked reboots of franchises that literally don't even need rebooting and so on and so forth). Worst case scenario is they go completely under, the industry goes into disarray with Activision probably gaining what would essentially be a monopoly on the AAA market, thousands of people are out of their jobs or out of their element at best, and then just about everything about gaming becomes shit for a while yet.
Basically, this is both good and bad news, and I hope it works out for the best. Even ignoring the massive negative impact EA's bankruptcy would have on the industry, it would just be downright tragic to see thousands of people lose their jobs like that, regardless of how bad the upper management may ultimately be.
To be honest, those dlcs are probably bringing in a lot of money. I doubt those will go away. The me3 dlc are certainly selling very well.
Not to mention this is still nothing compared to what mud EA was in 2002-2003
dead space came out in 08 and mirrors edge came out right at the start of 09
just sayin
oh whoops, fixed that now. I also didn't mention the original Mass Effect, which was actually really good at the time and didn't really have any pretense of being ~deep~ or whatever, it was just an experimental TPSRPG thing and a partial tribute to loads of old sci-fi shows. If '07-'09 was any indication, EA has the potential to publish some great new titles with all the good devs they have under their belt. It just seems they're reluctant to greenlight anything that isn't part of an established franchise now, which, again, I hope will change soon.
That is such a terrible argument. While video games cost more to make on average now, they also sell far, far more copies than they used to.
Take Medal of Honor Warfighter (since that's what the article references). Fairly cutting edge; probably had high development costs, but it was a totally shit game. It was a flagrant cash-grab attempt at the modern warfare shooter market and it blew up in their faces because it was a flaccid game with a tired shtick. The developer and publisher have nobody to blame but themselves. It doesn't indicate that the game market is changing, it just indicates that they are spending a lot of money to make crappy games.
Except development costs are constantly rising. You have to learn to deal with new technology, you have to hire more employees to keep up with a limited development cycle, and on top of that you can't raise prices. What gamers are calling bullshit financial decisions, like DLC and microtransactions? Are a result of this.
If EA keeps going on the same course, reusing old titles and making them garbage they're slowly going to die. The entire gaming industry will be screwed up as a good amount of game developers actually use EA for their publishing. Something seriously bad is going to happen up ahead, and I don't want to know what it will be.
Hopefully this will be a wake up call to revise their current business strategies.
I wish the industry would have a shining example of EA why prioritizing marketing and consumer exploitation above investing in better quality games and more development time is an unsustainable business model. I don't really care if EA goes bankrupt or not, but it would be the definite proof and a fable to the rest of the idiots if they did.
Why are you guys rating this winner? It just result in people losing jobs and the higher ups still making shit decisions.

no they don't, or at least not entirely. some insurance company owns the publishing rights to system shock and for some reason they just won't let it go. that's why there aren't any new system shock games.
[editline]4th February 2013[/editline]
fun fact: there's evidence that dead space was originally intended to be system shock 3
