What the fuck are they if they aren't fucking demonstrators? Protesters? Aren't they practically synonymous anyways?

pro·test·er ˈprōˌtestər,prəˈtestər/Submit noun noun: protestor a person who publicly demonstrates strong objection to something; a demonstrator.

dem·on·stra·tor ˈdemənˌstrādər/ noun 1. a person who takes part in a public protest meeting or march.
They are exactly the same thing. One just sounds worse.
They are exactly the same thing. One just sounds worse.
Is this some kind of weird-ass attempt to demonize the word protest on their part. Oh, when WE do it it's an outpouring of support, be we don't protest, that's what the nasty people do!

Remove words from the population's vocabulary, make them unpopular and "unacceptable" to use, and soon enough you eliminate the ability to express certain ideas. Like protest.
This doesn't make any sense! That's the shit you read from edgy kids in the comments of a liveleak video. With the white house turned into a kindergarten, I still believe I'm in an Eddie Murphy movie and I want to wake the fuck up from this nightmare!
So victim blaming is now the official policy. That's to be expected from the tone they kept during campaign. So what's the argument again, they're protecting honest Americans from getting arrested because they get an irresistible urge to shoot up immigrants?
What the fuck are they if they aren't fucking demonstrators? Protesters? Aren't they practically synonymous anyways?
he probably takes issue with "demonstrators" because it contains the word "demon"
Is there new proof that shows they were right wing? or trump supporters?
yes, the guy is in custody, is white, has boasted on social media about his love for trump and was not muslim
So like the word thug.
Oh come on, those are pretty differing circumstances. The terms "protest" or "protester" or "demonstrator" is not inherently negative and doesn't carry the loaded connotations like "Thug", and moreover do not have reasonable alternatives to convey the same idea. It was plainly obvious that right wing pundits and personalities were using the word "Thug" as a PC dogwhistle for less acceptable words in order to say the same thing and enact the same tired scaremongering tactics. What are "protest" and "demonstrator" being used to circumvent? There are plenty of other words and phrases that can be used to convey the exact same message as "Thug" but in a more scientific and less inflammatory manner. Why not use those?

It's one thing to point out when a given word is being used as a dogwhistle, it's another to demand that other people ban the word from their vocabulary because you can't tell the difference between covert and genuine uses.

I'm not saying that the word should be banned somehow, I'm saying that it's not unreasonable to call out its use when it's used in an inappropriate setting and for malicious purposes. I am more than fine with the word "Thug", just not when its used in the way that garnered its recent criticisms.

I don't really see the point. The way you say "why not use those" implies you're directing that message towards people who have no covert intention behind the use of the word.

And that wasn't my intention, sorry if I came off that way. My central point is that the words "Thug" and "Protest" are inherently not comparable when it comes to this argument. They differ too wildly in circumstance of their gradual expungement from the common vernacular, their connotations, the natures of the words themselves, etc. There are alternatives to the word "Thug" that carry different connotations that may be more appropriate in certain situations- what alternatives are there for concepts like protest and demonstration that are being actively demonized by the US executive government in a clear effort to quell dissent?

I'm expecting that they will come up with a subtle buzzword that implies that the protestors are protesting democracy or some other dumb meme.
Worth mentioning that CNN has referred to pro-choice activists as demonstrators when mentioned. There is no deeper meaning here; Spicer just isn't very smart.
