They didn't have to accept the pennies and in this case they were right to refuse him. It amazes me that people think that a guy should be allowed to pay off a bill by dumping a shitload of pennies onto a counter, leaving it to the store to clean up and count. Seriously, fuck that guy.
What you don't seem to be getting is that this was an act of protest. He was contesting the bill, but still paying it. Would you rather he just ignored the bill and didn't pay at all?
aw, i thought he was going to be paying in gum, like that stupid commercial
In the US any amount in coins counts as legal tender — but there is no law that forces shops and other retailers to accept them. That means businesses can ask for payment in any denomination they want.
Uh, no. All coins are legal tender, and all stores must accept legal tender. If their policy with coins is that they must be rolled, then they must have that policy posted, otherwise they can't enforce it. [editline]8th June 2011[/editline]
You can't pay with pennies unless they are wrapped in those $1 paper coin sheaths. [editline]8th June 2011[/editline] sorry to break it to the person who disagreed with me. No one is going to accept pennies they can't feasibly count or store in their register. Pennies are designed to make exact change, not pay bills. Fuck this person.
See what I said before, if their policy is that they must be rolled, their policy must be posted in order to be enforced just like a store needs to have it posted that they reserve the right to refuse service to anybody in order to enforce that. [editline]8th June 2011[/editline]
They could have just told him to clean it up and go use a coinstar machine.
They'd be refusing legal tender [editline]8th June 2011[/editline]
They didn't have to accept the pennies and in this case they were right to refuse him. Weigh one penny and then weigh them all. All issues about a multitude of pennies solved.

In the end the dude got fucked worse and he deserved it.
I remeber hearing that paying with more than a certain amount of pennies is not legal tender
Businesses can deny legal tender. For example, I can't pay my rent in cash. Had this store had it posted that they don't accept cash, then he wouldn't have been able to pay in pennies [editline]8th June 2011[/editline]
I remeber hearing that paying with more than a certain amount of pennies is not legal tender
So you're telling me that if I have enough pennies, they become worthless? Why not say that you don't accept $1s because they take too long to count in bulk? It's the same argument.
If they don't want people to pay with pennies, then stop allowing them to be used as legal currency. It should've happened ages ago anyway. I trash my pennies because they are goddamn worthless.
Just invent a 99p coin please, thank you.

If you have enough pennies either wrap them or go to a bank and turn them into a higher denomination.
It's common sense. If you have enough pennies either wrap them or go to a bank and turn them into a higher denomination.
You're missing the point. This was in protest of a bullshit bill that he tried to fight previously. He probably went to the bank and REQUESTED them specifically for this. No, you shouldn't go to a restaurant and pay for your meal in unrolled pennies. That doesn't mean it's illegal to, that doesn't mean that you can't.
Pennies are useless. I wish cash was replaced by a digital currency like Credit Cards/Debit Cards, PayPal, etc. I have a bunch of change that I literally have no idea what to do with. With the digital currency there just needs to be a simple way for people to exchange money similar to cash but not as complicated as credit cards. With CCs you have to have a phone connection to Visa and you have a crapton of regulations. So something like PayPal but you don't have to sit in front of your computer to use. Maybe Near Field Communication (NFC) thingies that Google is doing stuff with in Android. [editline]8th June 2011[/editline]
Just invent a 99p coin please, thank you.
Dunno about where you live, but in the US we pay sales tax. So something that is 99c here costs $1.06 at the cash register.

That way I can buy useless shit every once in a while and it doesn't all come directly out of the money that I need to budget for gas\food\etc
I think it is kind of mean to bring in only pennies. At least cash them in somewhere. It stalls everyone else on the line, plus a person working all day has to stop and count them all. Plus dumping them on the counter isn't very nice either.
So why do we waste money printing pennies when they cost more to produce then they're even worth?
So why do we waste money printing pennies when they cost more to produce then they're even worth?
If my digital currency idea is never implemented, I would not mind having all prices rounded to the nearest quarter to get rid of pennies, nickels, and dimes, because I don't use anything less than a quarter. And I only use quarters in vending machines. And to add to my previous post, no I don't want to use checks. I hate taking them to the bank. However, some banks let you take a picture of checks on your phone to cash them which is pretty cool.

Just because you agree this guy isn't in the wrong doesn't mean you're saying that you should be able to pay for anything and everything with pennies because they're legal tender. Yes, this is an asshole move. It was also an asshole move for the company to be charging their clients bullshit fees that this guy was trying to fight, and ended up having to pay.
IT'S MONEY YOU PLONKERS, just bloody accept it!
The clinic played Killing Floor. As far as I know there are no coins.
If they don't want people to pay with pennies, then stop allowing them to be used as legal currency. It should've happened ages ago anyway. I trash my pennies because they are goddamn worthless.
That's stupid no one is saying pennies are useless, paying with 2500 is obviously a way to piss people off. And pennies would cause a disturbance and probably tie up the counter for a long time, making it unfair to other people. If he had only pennies he could've just taken them to a bank. I don't support such a hefty fine as 140$ but still the cashier was right at not accepting the payment.
Why doesn't he just pay the fine in pennies? :v:

As long as physical currency exists, a 1 cent piece must exist.

I'm pretty sure this is illegal.

That also fails.

This is complete fucking bullshit it pisses me off.
Related.
