I'm very sure science originated naturally from human discovery, not religion. I'm sure that before there were these religions, people were making scientific progress. Religion had nothing to do with the birth of science.
I Also, how would you go about getting rid of religion without a bloodbath? Is someone just going to walk up to every religious person's house and say
science and education. get people smart so they can figure it out themselves
Good idea, let them exterminate eachother, no need for us to interfere.

Religious people usually do not want to get smart.

no. science is something that was around ever since someone was able to think.
If you mean that many scientists a few hundred years used the church that was because they had to in if they wanted to get the resources needed.
in fact any meme that doesnt use logic is the exact opposite of science and only hurts it

It's not like a religious person, especially the ones in 3rd world, will let you to teach their kids.
If teaching evolution causes such an outrage in america, imagine what will happen in islamic nations

If you lump Catholicism and Protestantism together, yes.
But if they're separate, then no.

Good plan. Let's seize all their property, forbid them from owning businesses, and forbid them from marrying non-Muslims so as to reduce their status and influence in society. Even better, let's move all the Muslims away so society isn't poisoned by them. Maybe we can send them to camps where they can concentrate.
TL;DR you're a Nazi

Or just nuke them, faster and cheaper
Probably been said before, but I'd doubt that they destroyed it because it was associated with extremist and oppressive beliefs but because it was a different sect from them. Starpluck's just trying to "glorify" their actions and completely twist their intentions. Sorry but a lot of Muslims are pretty damn simple-minded, hell look how simple-minded "well-educated" Christians in first world countries can be... They only did it because it didn't agree with their beliefs.
okay I phrased my previous post in this thread wrong. mainstream religion (christianity, islam, judaism. has slowed the world down in terms of human rights (LGBT rights worldwide, women's rights), scientific research (stem cell, cloning) and tons of other shit. there's nothing wrong with more naturalistic religions or beliefs that say stuff everyone should follow like the golden rule etc.
because embryonic stem cell research and human cloning are just undeniably good and cannot remotely be argued against

I'm pretty fuckin' sure that stuff like science would have been discovered anyway, and if not for the dark ages, we would be 500 years more advanced. Religion has stemmed science.

Doubts about what? Main concerns aren't "success rates", or something, but rather the ethical and moral issues associated with it.
And Protestantism isn't a sect of Catholicism. If it is, then Christianity is also a sect of Judaism.

Fuck the moral issues, that thing is a one way ticket to curing of everything.
Protestantism is one of the three major divisions within Christianity. It is a movement that began in northern Europe in the early 16th century as a reaction against medieval Roman Catholic doctrines and practices.
Yeah it totally isn't a sect of Catholicism. And before you say anything about that;
For many the term usually refers to Christians and churches belonging to the Roman Catholic Church in full communion with the Holy See.
You can't cure cancer with stem cells, that would be just retarded.
Also that definition of Catholicism means any Christian Church that is in the Roman Catholic Church sect with communion and the Holy See. It is a subset of Christianity as a whole which follows that denomination and those rituals.
I'm sorry , but a subsection of a religion that hates the other parts of it's own religion is just one of the most ridiculous things i've ever heard.
oh islam you
So all Christians get along then? What about Catholics vs Protestants? Many protestants I speak to don't even seem to count Catholics as Christians.
Protestantism is a SECT of Catholicism.
That's a bit utilitarian. Not going to debate ethics of both issues with you; no offense, it just goes on forever (from personal experience) and I can't be arsed.
I quote:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Religious_sect#In_Christianity
"There are many groups outside the Roman Catholic Church which are regarded as Catholic sects, such as the Community of the Lady of All Nations, the Palmarian Catholic Church, the Philippine Independent Church, the Brazilian Catholic Apostolic Church, the Free Catholic Church, the Movement for the Restoration of the Ten Commandments of God, and others."
None of these are Protestant churches. While they indeed started as a breakaway sect FROM the Catholic Church, I wouldn't say they are any longer.
So all Christians get along then? What about Catholics vs Protestants? Many protestants I speak to don't even seem to count Catholics as Christians.
Yeah, as a Catholic, I don't know why that is. I mean, I bear no animosity against Protestants.
That's a bit utilitarian.
If you're in a moral issue, how else are you going to come to any sort of reasoned conclusion without undergoing some form of cost/benefit analysis?
We will show how peaceful we are by creating acts of violence.
Really? Its ironic.

Because Catholics used to listen to whatever the pope said, and how fucking corrupt and dirty the Catholic church is with the infamous Vatican. That's the whole reason Protestantism was created as a core foundation. You're missing out on hundreds of years of history here.
If you're in a moral issue, how else are you going to come to any sort of reasoned conclusion without undergoing some form of cost/benefit analysis?
Through utilitarianism, which inherently ignores the morality of anything?

What. So because Protestants originally sprung from the Catholic Church, that's reason to hate /me/. No, don't think so.

A lot of fundies hate Catholics because Catholics don't take the Bible as literally as they do.
it's contributed a lot, actually
like the birth of science, for one
Religion itself wasn't the factor that gave birth to science, it was just that the only educated people left in those times tended to be monks. Nor was science as stigmatized back then as people like to believe; indeed, they tended to see it as getting a greater understanding of God's creations.
Islamic laws DENY war on almost every situation.
These extremeist groups have used the word Jihad in a wrong way, which has resulted in so many people - over 1 billion - have been labelled in this society of ours.
