That's a bit like comparing an anti-tank rifle to a pack howitzer...
This is why I say people need to take a firearm safety course early on though, this death could easily have been prevented. When I go give a gun to someone who hasn't handled one before, I always go over how to safely check a gun. It's not hard and it prevents accidents better than any gun ban.

So since he just picked up the wrong rifle, he knew they were loaded. If they were not loaded, that means the guy loaded the bullet himself.
I guess I'd understand having the rifle loaded in case you'd actually need to use it for self defence (let's not get into discussion would it be right/useful or whatever), but I don't think anyone keeps an air rifle loaded - especially if you also have an actual rifle.
This is a bit too suspicious.
Grabbing the wrong rifle is bad enough.
But what made him think that pointing the gun DIRECTLY at his friend was a good idea?!
It sounds to me like he killed him intentionally. How can you "accidentally" pick up a real rifle instead of an air rifle and then "accidentally" shoot him in the chest?

Well that is why you properly store your firearms. I have at least 3 firearms in my house they're all under lock and key. It is a very, very, bad idea to leave a gun unlocked and laying around and on top of that LOADED.
It's a shame the guy had to die for such a stupid mistake and it is just as sad that his best friend has to live with himself now knowing what he did to his best bud.
You realize air rifles use Co2 or another compressed gas to fire? He was most likely trying to wake him up with the sound of the gas firing, not actually shooting a BB at him. He wouldn't have needed to load it as the Co2 canisters are usually in the gun beforehand. You just load the pellet, which he wouldn't have seeing as shooting someone with a pellet would still injure them.
