There's no way you can mistake a real rifle for an air rifle. He's either mentally retarded or he meant to kill the guy.
It was a .22 rifle, they look very similar to a normal pellet gun.

I did something similar once. My step brother was riding a skateboard around and I was going to take the bb gun out back to shoot at stuff. Little did I know that grandpa was a psychotic squirrel killer and left the rifle SAFETY OFF pumped to lethal capacity and loaded. I accidentally pulled the trigger while walking and it ricochet and hit that soft spot behind his ear. They cant remove the BB or else they'll cut vital nerves in his face. It's in there forever.
a BB doesn't have sufficient weight around it, where bullets are typically made out of mostly lead. That said, a 5.56x45mm round (Most widely used round in the US military, in M16s, the M249, etc) is just about the same size in diameter as the tiny bullet you seem to think can't kill anyone.
the length of a .22 bullet is around a quarter of the length of a 5.56 bullet fuck if i know though, i'm just regurgitating shit that /k/ says
Said Manchester and i thought "Yep, sounds about right." But then i realised its just americans unable to come up with original city names...
the length of a .22 bullet is around a quarter of the length of a 5.56 bullet fuck if i know though, i'm just regurgitating shit that /k/ says
Length would only really matter if the round tumbled around, and if it's a 5.56x45mm it probably has a high enough velocity to pierce straight through, where as a .22 is much more likely to tumble because it has a lot less power behind it proportionally.
I find this impossible to believe. the part about it being an accident anyway, NEVER point weapons at anything without intent to harm.
no it put him to sleep... forever
oh OH god, it's everywhere That was the cheesiest remark I've ever seen on facepunch, its unfortunate its in relation to such grave events :saddowns: [editline]29th November 2010[/editline]
Length would only really matter if the round tumbled around, and if it's a 5.56x45mm it probably has a high enough velocity to pierce straight through, where as a .22 is much more likely to tumble because it has a lot less power behind it proportionally.
Other way around, 5.56 is more likely to shatter or tumble on impact... the .22 probably travelled right through (unless it hits bone) The higher the velocity, the higher the chance that the round will shatter and/or tumble on it's way through soft, water based materials. The kinetic energy of a round is not only transferred into the target on impact, the bullet also feels the repercussions. Due to the high velocity of intermediate, and full powered rifle cartridges, the rounds will often shatter as they pass through dense tissue. [editline]29th November 2010[/editline]
Not really, it would be the same as getting killed by any other round to the head only more efficient. The round would bounce around in your head and scramble your brains.
 A 5.56 will literally take a nice chunk of your skull off, and your brain will actually fall out or pour out (provided your head hits the ground)
Not really, it would be the same as getting killed by any other round to the head only more efficient. The round would bounce around in your head and scramble your brains.
I donno I'm pretty sure a .45 goes straight through the skull, in and out. Hell I wouldn't be surprised if a 9mm went straight through also. [img_thumb]http://www.gunslot.com/files/gunslot/images/38426.jpg[/img_thumb] The .22 (the one to the far right), I'm sure would be the only one that would "scramble your brains."
.22 is a very weak round. In laments terms, it's roughly 12 times more powerful than a paintball (or a BB, I guess). So imagine a paintball impacting with you, but 12 times harder than before, and in a smaller area of impact. a .45 acp impacts roughly 3 times harder than a .22. an average 9mm para is just about as powerful as .45 due to its considerably higher velocity, but .45 is generally regarded to have more stopping power due to the robust nature of the projectile. Not sure if a .22 would "bounce" (sounds like a CSI myth) but it may just impact with the back of your skull with not enough force to punch back out again. Then again, it also depends on what grain the round is and what load the cartridge is. Likewise it also depends on whether the round is copper plated or just made of lead alone. I think it's more likely that it'd just stop, rather than bounce, or bounce with enough force to "scramble" the remaining parts of your brain. Under normal circumstances, one .22 round is probably not enough to kill a human, unless it penetrates your skull, destroys your heart, or causes a medical complication that kills you later (popped lung..) I think the fact that this guy was taken totally by surprise is probably what helped kill him. Getting shot in your sleep is usually quite a shock, obviously. In other crimes purpetrated with 22 firearms, somebody would probably need to sustain quite a few shots to be killed at the scene of the crime. At any rate, .22 is every small, low power cartridge. it doesn't need a heavy weapon to use it, so a .22 rifle would be pretty easy to mistake with a BB gun, especially if he was feeling around in the dark for it. The guy is still an idiot, though, keeping his rifle loaded like that. Sounds like college kids, so they may have been drunk or something.

What an asshole. That's still a shitty prank to do, even if he did it right.
If it wasn't loaded, how would he wake his friend up?
Why would you point it at his chest when you fired it if you don't intended to kill him.
Bottom line here is, even if it was supposed to be a prank, just for giggles, it doesn't make it any less a murder
Dick move for shooting his sleeping friend period, but he gets extra retard points for using a fucking RIFLE.
