Why would someone disable UAC? It's pointless to do so.

to avoid the prompts...
I won't even go into this.
sorry, i meant -install- directx to wine. theres a buttload of files you have to install and manually add when using wine.
to avoid the prompts...
That's a stupid reason. They exist for a reason.
why would you disable the taskbar? to avoid seeing icons
Again, better just to run a VM on linux.
I didn't know people hated others that happened to have XP on an old machine this much.
I'll just hide my old laptop at the top of my closet where no one can find it and yell at me. :v:
What about the developers that don't actually develop any more?

The devs should free the software if they can't maintain it anymore

well, as you can clearly see, some people don't like the uac prompts. the same people do, however, enjoy icons.
again you need an XP key to run XP on a VM

see my above post with links to microsoft.
I have a question.
Why does it matter what other folks are running?
Because you're posting on the internet, it's a public forum, you're going to get responses.
Am I so out of the loop that I missed some sort of moral attachment to OS's?
Some people think it is important that computers are "free" (for a certain definition of that word), and supporting Microsoft is antithetical to that end (though I don't think anybody has bought Windows XP recently so that is hardly relevant).
I'm not in charge of anyone's web secrets or bank accounts, so.. why should anyone care?
Well if security of your own accounts is important I imagine you'd want to use secure operating systems and software.
well, as you can clearly see, some people don't like the uac prompts.
I've never ever heard of someone openly complain about a UAC prompt.

No there isn't.
[editline]31st July 2013[/editline]
For example, I bought GTA IV on Steam in the sales (since the DLC was in the Rockstar pack) and it ran without issue in wine, all I did was install the wine 1.6 release candidate (I didn't try with the current wine release, but it probably runs there too).

I'm surprised. My friends always complained about them until I told them how to shut them off.

Well yeah. When UAC was first introduced, people asked how to shut it off. Now they search for how to shut it off and find the original older articles/posts about it rather than ask again.
That's kinda how searching for information works.

Still not the point. I don't find UAC prompts annoying and I don't know anyone who does.
UAC was not first introduced in 2010.

after searching a bit more, i realize that i was doing a step wrong, i was manually adding single files with winetricks instead of pasting the list into the registry. would be nice to get ubuntu working with everything.
my problem was also that i couldnt even get steam running.
assuming the NSA doesn't make another flame virus, having your computer plugged into the net is fine. following the same practices you would on a modern machine(dont open porn.exe) there is nothing that will get through XP.
ever heard of driveby malware? not every virus is a shady exe file, but can be caught by just visiting a site. most malware comes from legit sites which are infected.

I never said it was. The top results are from 2007 and 2008, exactly when UAC was introduced.
so all this guy is saying is 'i run a specialized system which works fine, iin't connected to the internet and i see no point in replacing until it fails, haha fuck you microsoft'
I mean, ok? Thanks for that info I guess - you're one of the many people for which it isn't cost effective to upgrade from XP, well done.

You must be some kind of god with computers then because the only thing I've managed to get running under Wine was Half Life 2, a game that is probably the stablest thing of all time and would run on a fridge if you wanted it to. I can't imagine how you got GTAIV, a game that barely runs on windows itself, to work, what with all its idiosyncracies and instabillities.

I can't get HL2 working on my windows laptop, so it's clearly less sophisticated than a fridge.
How anyone can get most software running under Wine is beyond me.
And it's too hard for you to pick up a netbook for £150?

who would voluntarily buy a netbook in 2013 lol

Your experience is likely with an old version of Wine or whatever distro you were running, for reference I used Kubuntu 13.04 with this repository for wine 1.6. I also have a fairly weak GPU, so the performance wasn't amazing but I was expecting as much, I will try it again once I get around to upgrading from the 512mb HD 5750 I'm current using.

i've tried it with arch and ubuntu and never really got anywhere with either; wine itself was utterly impenetrable to me (the documentation is fucking shite) so I used playonlinux which was about as useful as a marzipan dildo
also upgrading that 5750 won't do you much good, with IV it's all about the CPU and whether it likes it or not

Wine is coming a long way, fast. Especially because of that patch for Gallium3D that apparently doubles performance.

I have plenty of CPU power, all I can really do is throw more GPU power at it. I'm going to wait for the HD 9000 series and if AMDs drivers are still behind nVidia's then I'll probably try out the GTX 700 series.
I think I'm gonna keep Windows XP on my laptop.
I love installing XP. So the malware will make it easier!
Also I have a computer with Windows 7 already.
oh yeah I forgot about the state of AMD's linux drivers
at least you're not using a laptop with hybrid graphics, that's the hackiest shit ever to get working
I decided XP was shithouse the first time I used Fedora Core 4.
That day was more important for teenage me than the day I worked out girls like it when you let them talk about themselves.
AMDs hybrid graphics don't even work properly in Windows, I remember trying to play Just Cause 2 on one laptop and for some reason the display was lagging behind by a whole second, there's no point in running a game at 60 fps if it can't even get it on screen in a reasonable time.
XP was such a great operating system for its time. It's getting outdated now though and you need to upgrade.
