I use BoA I'm not charged any fees, I don't know what the fuck your bank is doing.
You're overall in a better position with a credit union that is explicitly not for-profit than with a bank that is for-profit, but has decided not to charge you fees.
I currently bank with USAA and Pacific Marine Credit Union. I'm thinking of switching to navy fed for convenience (since PMCU is in cali and I'm in florida) but it hasn't been that much of a hassle for me to where I feel I need to. I like these A LOT more than wells fargo, they can go fuck themselves.
I had an account at Chase And they were a massive BITCH to deal with It took me almost an entire day just to open a new checking account And when I lost my debit card I had to deal with so much horsecrap I really should have left then. I just moved to a local credit union and holey fucking shit it's so much better Free checking No minimum balance Great APR And they have free cookies at the place near me
Aww, we don't get cookies, just coffee.
I've been thinking about making the switch, but my bank (New Mexico Bank&Trust) has been pretty good to me over the years. The only bullshit they've given me was when I needed to pay $1500 on my rebuilt transmission and they wouldn't let the full amount through so I had to call and let them know what was going on, but that's more of an annoyance than anything. Then again I don't know what, if any, major bank owns them and wether or not I can expect any "SURPRISE, DEBIT FEES!" in the future. Guess I'll just have to remain vigilant.
I switched to a local credit union last year. Mine is pretty sweet, the employees can remember my name as soon as I walk in the door and will actually chitchat with me. On top of that, for everything I do I get points which you can use to get shit, like lower loan rates and fee payment. This is mine, if anyone's curious. I can never go back to a major bank after switching to a credit union. This is how bank service is supposed to be.
How do Credit Unions make money? Is it through loans or investing?
They're nonprofit.
They're nonprofit.
They still have to make money. And quite a lot of it. Employees, facilities, interest rates and a lot of other stuff. Being non-profit sort of means they use profit in other ways as opposed to them not making any money.

They will be much more lenient and much less "profit maximize even if that means unethical and tons of questionable behavior".
I'm kind of worried that this huge rush to credit unions may end badly; aren't widespread rushes what make depressions?
