Honestly, I find this as wrong as the next guy, but people are blaming the police for all this shit, they have been told to leave, they could have, they didn't, their fault.
If a police officer says to someone, "You have to leave right now, or I'll beat you", it does not become that person's fault if they don't leave. That kind of mentality is completely ridiculous.
its justified if they've told the protestors to leave multiple times, and some protestors have assaulted the cops, sounds justified to me.
I wasn't aware yelling at an officer was "assaulting the cops".
Who gives the authority for the escalation and use?
It doesn't sit well with me when the officers are probably following orders.

Most likely the officers in white shirts, with a rank or lieutenant or higher.
priests can call down the wrath of god, right?
OWS wins
So a priest, a pregnant woman and an old lady walk into a protest.. tell me if you've heard this one.
Bullshit. None of this is justified. They have every right to protest in public, it's a complete cop-out to say "Yeah, it's your fault for not shutting the fuck up and not complaining." Yeah, fuckin' peasants should go back to McDonalds so they can pay the new bank fees.
Weren't they on private park property?
Sounds like a beginning to a joke. "An old woman, a pregnant woman and a priest walk into a riot..."
I hate the police.
This occupy bullshit isnt working at all, and its just getting pathetic
This occupy bullshit isnt working at all, and its just getting pathetic
what do you mean? they must be doing SOMETHING right to evoke this kind of response. the use of force just shows how afraid these protests are making the establishment.
Just riot already. They are taunting the dragon.
Sure, lets avoid the problem by saying some cops are good when what we should be doing is enforcing laws to make sure there are just good ones. Any cop who abuses or malpractices his authority should be kicked of the force immediately.
Except for the part where he never said to avoid the problem.
But yeah! Fuck the police! Rate agree!
Sure, lets avoid the problem by saying some cops are good when what we should be doing is enforcing laws to make sure there are just good ones. Any cop who abuses or malpractices his authority should be kicked of the force immediately.
This is very true, of all professions it seems law enforcement is the easiest to get away with conducting malpractice. There's always been a "brotherhood" of policemen in precincts, and it's not a good idea to say "Oh well there's good police too though." because that doesn't fix the problem, it just makes you forget about it.
It's similar to saying "Oh well yeah there may be some doctors that are incredibly dangerous and shouldn't be allowed to be near a patient let alone in a position of support and power over life, but they're mainly good doctors out there."
"Malpractice" is pretty damn heavily regulated in the medical profession and minor slip ups that are honestly not that big a deal can end up getting your ass sued if your a doctor. Where as major slip ups like shooting a deaf man seven times while he was walking down the street for holding a modeling knife are swept under the rug as unfortunate anomalies. When issues of police misconduct happen on a regular basis because it's not recognized as serious as medical malpractice for some odd reason.
Obviously running around saying "FUCK DA POLEES" is stupid as hell and will get you and the police/citizen relationship absolutely nowhere, but legislators and more specifically police chiefs and mayors need to stop tolerating dangerous behavior that has and will continue to get people killed and injured when they shouldn't have.
Not rejecting the fault on anyone here, but the pregnant woman who got sprayed shouldn't even have been here in the first place. She's carrying a damn baby and the best thing to do she can think of is getting in the street in an angry crowd where pretty much any fucking one could kick/punch/push her, even without actually wanting to ?
Not exactly the smartest thing to do. But I'm not rejecting the fault on her, once again.
It's really complicated though...
One one hand you have the police who are following their orders to keep the protests under control. This is understandable. While the use of force is "justified" by their RoE, perhaps, the line between where they should/shouldn't choose to employ their equipment is extremely blurry and often ends up as a shitstorm of brutality accusations.
On the other hand, you can't blame protesters for being hurt by the police because they didn't LISTEN to what they're told.
If the police could tell them to "Back off and go home or we will beat the living shit out of you" and their actions afterwards were thus justified because they gave warning, it would eliminate a good part of the point in protesting...
What is the point in standing up if the force-abusers have "rights" by law to smack you back down?
wow, old people, religious leaders and pregnant women? That's like the trifecta of bad publicity
Its the Seattle police, what do you expect? All they do is shoot people.
Like just a few months ago they shot a homeless guy because he was holding an axe carving some wood sculptures next to the road.
this is sickening... I'm waiting (wishfully) that all the protestors will simultaneously pull out Molotov cocktails, throw them through the windows and burn down wall street and all of the grimy stockbrokers and fat cats inside... but that's just me
wouldn't mind if they just attacked trump tower I mean does anybody seriously like Donald Trump?
what do you mean? they must be doing SOMETHING right to evoke this kind of response. the use of force just shows how afraid these protests are making the establishment.
Not to mention the media blackout they tried to enforce.
But hooray for smartphones and 3G internet, since lots of footage came out anyway because of that combo.
And the media will report this MUCH more softly than it really is.
A pregnant woman and an elderly?
Seriously now...
[editline]16th November 2011[/editline]
Also if someone will assault an officer at this point,it should be considered as ''self defense''
An elderly woman, a pregnant woman and a priest
Oh, I think I know how this one goes!
were among those who were pepper-sprayed during a protest in support of the Occupy movement on Tuesday.
:suicide:
what do you mean? they must be doing SOMETHING right to evoke this kind of response. the use of force just shows how afraid these protests are making the establishment.
But, don't police always use force no matter what the protest is about?
Ive been sprayed with pepper spray before. It stings like a motherfucker. I'm actually starting to feel sorry for these people. Especially an old women and a pregnant women? Fuck the police, Arrest no peace!
You guys act like they specifically targeted the old woman the pregnant lady, you don't spray specific people in a crowd.
You guys act like they specifically targeted the old woman the pregnant lady, you don't spray specific people in a crowd.
You don't fucking spray a crowd just because the big man upstairs doesn't like that they're sick and tired of being fucked over either.

I'm pretty sure pepper spray can only be used after the protest or riot or whatever it is escalates over a certain point, where the assembly might not have been able to be controlled with normal methods.

I'm sure that's what it's normally used for, yes.
I can see it being used a lot more often when a crowd gets "Violent", aka starts moving towards one direction or raises their voices.
"i never asked for this"
"i never asked for this"
yeah that doesn't work here
the old lady didn't get augmented or anything
