Spotify is terrible for the artists, unfortunately
Soundcloud and grooveshark are great.
Usually if I find a song on there I really like I end up downloading it once and then storing it on my computer. Wasting too much bandwidth redownloading the same song every time I want to hear it.
Yeah streaming music is awesome. I've been using
Last.fm together with Last.fm free music player for Chrome.
You get virtually all music available.
BUT, you have to register at VK.com for it to work.
I've been using Pandora because I don't care enough to maintain a music library and I like it giving me random shit on my phone.
A load of bullshit, tons of people will always pirate because they're greedy.
Stop the bullshit that it'll stop piracy because no matter what people still want it for free.
Not a fan of streaming but seeing as it's becoming incredibly easy to access music "legally", and with mobile internet getting better and better, it may just be a new age.
However, the reason why p2p has lowered is the fact that people are starting to give up using awful unreliable malware ridden sites. I'm literally ashamed of using Limewire once...

people are naturally greedy anyway :v:
i never used limewire because it felt clunky and stupid to me
i do remember when it was considered to be the shit though

i think i once downloaded a file named: Gangster's Paradise.exe
:-(

aren't CD's/Downloads terrible for them as well?
I thought shows/events were the primary way they made money
Well, unless they just plain don't want to spend any money.
In which case they may as well just pirate anyway.
Either way, if they pirate their music or just don't buy anything, the music industry's going to make no money off them.

how is "listening to the artist" terrible in any way shape or form?
If you want to give money directly to the artist, donate to them personally or go see them live..

I read this quote somewhere (more likely saw it in a movie) that really meant something: "The music is free, you're just paying for the plastic, printing and stickers".
How true is that statement?
is this spotify in canada?
is this spotify in canada?
I'm pretty sure it is. Just check their site, it'll tell you if you can use it.
But yeah, Spotify is brilliant, £5 a month and I got 90% of music at my fingertips ready to play. I'm not surprised that piracy has took a hit because of it purely because of how convenient services like Spotify are.

Not at all, since the artist is still paid royalties on CD sales.

was talking about the sentement mate.
As a (sorta) long time music producer, I can safely say that, if I had 2,000,000 people torrenting my newest album, and not a single purchase, knowing people would go lengths just to illegally download it would let me know how desperate they are for it, which is much more rewarding than £2,000,000 (although a sort of living's worth of money is nice)
Grooveshark's okay sometimes because you can actually get the files but the database is messy as shit because it's user contributed. I tried to get a piece that's 5 movements off of there and in the only version of it 3 and 4 were just missing.

as a professional mixing engineer I can safely say that if I had 2000000 people stealing my music I'd be pretty pissed

as a professional lounger, I can safely say what's heard should be free, what's performed should be charged.

That's very ignorant and terrible of you. Be it plastic or binary it took same amount of hours to create that piece. Just because something sold is digital does not mean it took less work to create it.

what about the incredibly obscure things that have the same amount of effort put in as incredibly popular things?
I think they'd be happy it's being heard rather than the money coming in. Or maybe I'm too ignorant to be cash hungry.

you don't have to be cash hungry to be pissed about someone stealing from you

It's pretty god damn awful to think you shouldn't ever have to pay for someone's hard work just because it isn't a live show or in physical form

That's my personal choice. You're calling me ignorant even though I spend hundreds already..
If you produce music solely to get a buck, that's more shameful than me not paying for binary.

"that's my personal choice" is a pretty shit argument.
