How is this even open to debate? No one knows what strangers are capable of, those women could have easily been armed with knives or guns considering how rowdy and abusive they were. If the world went to shit tomorrow every human being would most likely go into a perpetual state of survival. When experience an immediate threat our body (without our control) decides whether to run or stay and defend oneself. It's a split second decision that you don't have any control or time to make. Obviously this guy sees a woman hopping the counter and instantly survival mode kicks in. Sure, he wasn't in a lethally dangerous survival situation, but the brain interprets a threat as a threat, there isn't any levels of severity that it'll react on. Him being a rather young employee he probably knew where the pipe was from previous scenarios where he was thinking about what he'd do if someone tried robbing him during a night shift. Hell, I did it too when I was working late shifts closing my store for the night. You hope to never have a scenario like that happen but at least if it does you have a rough plan. Anyways, when you're in that adrenaline fueled/rage survival mode it's hard to really decide when enough is enough. He sees them trying to get back up and his brain is still telling him the threat is still there. So when they finally stop trying he knows that they've been wore out enough and won't keep at it. Just a side note, from my experience at burger king, when any rowdy customer even begins to tread the line between the dining room and the up front counter, our adrenaline starts pumping immediately, I've seen it many times. I can totally understand why he did what he did. They were attacking him, and he defended himself, his adrenaline was pumping, he was in the survival mindset, they got up, he knocked them down again. I have no sympathy for them.
