Dont get the wrong idea here guys, It was clearly an CIA Coup !!
Go away whollyrufus
Course none of these acts of protests will ever amount to anything, Putin is heading the operation for God sake, the KGB is still alive and well.
So be silent and just accept the way things are? What?
The current situation in Russia can't be solved by walking down the streets shouting things. There is a deep political crisis going on here, combined with even deeper crisis of national identity. The government doesn't give a shit about protests and opposition, and people don't give a shit about their rulers.
All these people like Putin being in charge and high corruption rates are just side effects of this imo.

but what other measures should be taken to reduce the political apathy what the russian people suffer from? surely a demonstration like this one will encourage other russians to become more active?
geniune question, i really want to know how russian people would go about solving these problems!

"Inexplicable 234-car pile-up involving Ukrainian fuel tanker claims thousands!"
Whataboutism is pretty much referring to the long and old argument that "criticizing what this country does is bad, because all of these other places are bad/just as bad".
When people criticized the Soviet Union for cracking down on free speech, a common rebuttal would be "what about racism in the USA". When criticized for invading Afghanistan, a counterargument would point to the bay of pigs or Pinochet or Nicaragua. People with low living standards? Just point to the homeless in America. It didn't work out in the end, because when push came to shove, nobody was shot trying to climb over the wall into East Berlin.
Today, the intervention in Ukraine and annexation of Crimea is justified because "The Americans/EU supported a coup", or that NATO is expanding east and hemming in Russia. In the end it's still a bullshit argument. Just because America are imperialistic, does not justify Russia being imperialistic.
somehow I recently learned the term for 'whataboutism' (like "but there's starving children in africa") is "Fallacy of Relative Privation". Who comes up with this stuff
and to the whole argument over how there's also anti-obama protesters and it doesn't mean shit, there'd be a totally different atmosphere if Romney ended up mysteriously shot dead in front of the white house just before the 2012 election
I don't get how Russian posters can claim the USA is just as corrupt as Russia. I don't remember the last time an opposition politician got murdered in the streets of DC, do you?
You don't need to shoot a man in public to be corrupt.
All this hate between Americans and Russians sucks. Why don't we use that hate to fuel our rockets for space race V2?
I say we meet in Alaska and have a few a drinks and talk about this, you guys bring the vodka.
I knew someone would start carping about this.
He said why do people find it hard to believe Putin has high approval ratings.
Someone said it is because Russia is corrupt.
How does that make it hard to believe? Does a corrupt government mean the people are more likely to .
Well I remember back a few years ago there was a report about how Putin had an approval rating of something like 107% so, I mean, that makes it pretty hard to believe. I can't be assed to back up my claim here with the source on grounds I don't wish to participate further in the discussion as I see it going nowhere fast.
Will you please shut the fuck up chirping and quoting other peoples posts and make up something original. Someone should be a "facepunch" circle jerk bot. Sampled from posts like yours.

Not really, there are good and shitty places in Russia just like there are good and shitty places everywhere else in the world.
It only irks me because this forum is full of pseudo intellectuals who laugh at Russian website commentators and similar people while not realizing they're literally their mirrored version. Russophobia on this forum and intolerance of anything apart from extreme liberalism is astounding.
Instant not knowing what's the purpose of whataboutism: brought to you by another armchair intellectual. Whataboutism would be a fallacy if I actually claimed that Russia wasn't corrupted, my stance is that US is just as shitty as Russia.
Whatever, I might as well stop posting because FP has proven time and time again that it's not a place for discussion; it's a place for bandwagoning and circlejerking.
It's not Russophobia as much as it's just pointing out the obvious and laughing at how backwards Russia is. The Kremlin just can't let go of past Soviet dreams. What's funny is how obvious Putin portrays it in his interactions on the world stage.
To say that the US is as bad as Russia is comparing Apples to Oranges. I would say the US is tenfold better than most places in the world. It's not a matter of opinion when you compare things such as average incomes, cost of living, land values, crime and health, etc...For example, I know my insurance company doesn't require me to have a dashcam to even have basic liability insurance because of the shit drivers. I live near Atlanta too and they are generally the shittiest of shit drivers you can find in the US.
Hundreds of thousands of Americans have been chanting "USA without Obama" for years. Doesn't really mean a fucking thing.
Obama is a conpetent president that has done better in the past years of his time in office than other administrations I can name.
Putin is pretty much a dictator in all except for official title, and his war in the Ukraine and his other transgressions have clearly shown the people good reason to actually agree to want him out.
Please let's not have another thread with "BUT WHAT ABOUT 'MURICAH?".
[editline]2nd March 2015[/editline]
Absoluetely. The best argument against this whataboutism is this: yes, the US is imperialistic and corrupt and has oligarchic influence. Guess what? That's bad too! So why the fuck would anyone offer that up as a comparison that somehow absolves Russia? If anything, bringing up that comparison is an admission of Russia's problems, not a defense.
Umm. While I definantly agree that Whataboutism is a very stupid defensive argument, that really doesn't mean America is Imperialistic. In fact unlike Russia, we didn't just plant a flag in Iraq and say "you're technically ours now bitch".
Also I'm just gonna say, as someone who studies History, every nation on the planet earth has blood on their palms. Ever since man first learned that you could kill another by bashing his head in with a rock, man has done terrible things to one another. America has done terrible things in the past. So has every European nation towards the nation of Africa. Britain has the Boer War. The French monarchy during the Revolutions. Germany in World War II, and of course Stalin's many many purges. Not to mention Asia's blood with the Rape of Nanking, or China with Tibet, or Australia's many many many massacres of Indigenous Australians between 1780-1920s.
To say that America is the only person in the world that can do bad, is a grand hypocritical thing to say.
Why do you even care about this. Parading and chanting won't change anything.
When your deputy prime minister (which I suppose means he's at least somewhere at the top) starts tweeting videos like this, you know you fucked up (turn on captions):

I'm sorry, but Russia did right by intervening into the Georgian-Osetian conflict. Saakashvili is an even bigger asshole and deserved what came for him.
So you're implying people don't have any reason to complain about Obama?

If you were to actually open a book now and then you'd perhaps know that Obama's a bit more stable as president than Putin is.
Shouting at a dog on it's leash is one thing, but shouting at the guy over your shoulder with a knife's another.

you actually think russia invaded georgia to defend the ossetians? saakashvili was an idiot for invading south ossetia but the russians were active in abkhazia and south ossetia since the civil war in the 90s and were pretty much in control. they just wanted to punish georgia for getting too friendly with the west.
basically another case of russia thinking it has the right to intervene in the internal affairs of other countries, with some good ole ethnic cleansing on the side as well.
So you're saying Russia started the war? :v:
they sure didn't make any effort to avoid a war, what with the repeated ossetian raids on georgian villages months before the actual war started
again, georgia's military response is definitely what gave the russians their casus belli, but it's not like they weren't being increasingly aggressive with their provocations
