The reason it went to shit was he attempted to invade Russia, which tends to be an incredibly stupid idea. And it went badly, unsurprisingly, and this loss gave many European states the impetus needed to band together and strike the French Empire. Also, you say France as though it wasn't a powerhouse until the Franco-Prussian War.
