farmatyr's catheter story was a great read since I'm going into hospital on Monday for sedation for a gastroscopy, it's made me much calmer about the whole thing
As someone already said, it's not the needle that hurts, mostly it's the medicine.
I got an HPV vaccination (they were free, so why not?) and goddamn I felt it for five minutes. The past two unrelated shots two seconds before? Nothing.
Some needles hurt, have you ever taken a needle to the toe?
Had to have a toenail removed once, the anaesthetic injection was probably one of the most excruciating pains I've ever felt
every other injection though has been fine
I once failed to get an IV injected into me 8 times.
They gave me a blanket though so it was all cool.
This is great for my heroin addiction!
This is misleading because this particular device only works with certain things
Other types of injections are still going to be painful for some people, and that's unpreventable. Certain types of intramuscular injections require a large gauge needle for example, certain medical compounds cause irritation at the site of injection, again, this isn't preventable.
You know what else you could do?
Sack up and be a man.
yes thank you this advice made me drop my aichmophobia entirely
TRULY GENIUS
Only injections that hurt are the fucking Novocain injections into your mouth at the dentist.
good news for all of us hypochondriac needle phobes.
now the only thing we'll fear is that cough which will inevitably be caused by throat cancer.
There's at least one injection which is done into an artery, which is taking blood for an arterial blood gases test. I had it done once when I was in A&E, and even that wasn't too bad (it gets taken from the artery in your wrist), though I got lucky as the doctor that did it was very good at it.
Conversely the worst injections I've had are subcutaneous ones. I occasionally have to go on heparin shots, which you inject into the fat in the stomach, and they sting like a bitch.
Oh yeah of course you get blood taken from arteries but lets face it, it's pretty rare for someone to get it done.
Worst I had was the second time I donated blood, the needle went over the crook of my elbow so I couldn't move my arm and I could feel the tip of the needle scratching the inside of my vein, was easily one of the most disgusting things I've ever felt.

Unless you've had a truly horrific experience with needles in the past I don't understand a fear of needles, a fear of sharps yeah that's understandable I have a great dislike of knives and the like but not to the point of a phobia, but honestly they're a facet of healthcare and to not get vaccines puts you at a major health risk at times.
And that is why you just gotta do it.
Most painful injection I ever had was when the nurse missed my vain and put the needle right into a nerve cluster.
i can feel needles, i can feel them in my mouth when i'm having oral surgery at the dentist, I can feel needles when they try to put me to sleep, I can still feel it without looking at it.
And that is why you just gotta do it.
i dont avoid them to the point where i avoid injections that literally saved my life
then it gets kind of mandatory

I meant stuff like malaria vaccines if you visit south america and stuff. My last few comments came across wrong as well, I'm not trying to be an asshole about this, it's just that through my experience a vaccination, injection or whatever has never really been that bad to warrant a phobia so of course my ego's just jumped in a declared everyone who doesn't like them a pussy, can't be helped sometimes it just gets ahead of me :v:
After reading over my post I realize how shifty it sounds, but I've been with this doctor since I moved to Maine so I don't think he'd intentionally fuck me up. I have had skin cancer before and my family history is one of various fatal illnesses, so I can accept that "it'll help prevent cancer." I have an information leaflet somewhere around here, but I can't find it V:v:V
I thought you would have been in remission, I hope all stays clear for you man
But yeah that sounded ridiculously shifty :v:
ITT: "needles don't hurt what are you talking about? It's just a prick"
I guess you've never had two needles in both sides of your left big toe for your ingrown toenail surgery.
It. Fucking. Hurts.
I'm not joking, I can't even describe it. It's fucking painful.

I've had that dude, it's really not that bad, but again the interpretation of pain is subjective.
These things hurt the most, nurse failed to inject the tube correctly 9 times in my hand. My hand was black the time they got it right.
I had to have that done once when I had a serious case of appendicitis. It took them three times to do it. I would definitely have died if I hadn't had it done though.
I find that with general injections, you don't really feel it if you're not thinking about it, or are otherwise distracted.
I've never felt anything from needles. I even look at the needle when they inject it because I kind of find it fascinating. :v:
What I hate the most about injections is people over-reacting about it
When i lived in the USSR (born there) the only injections we had were in the ass,and by god it hurt.
This syringe will remove the barely there pain of being injected but it is still a welcome thing.
Useless and a waste of money. I agree those shots do sting a bit, but it isn't very painful.
From my own experience i can tell every injection feels different. Some you feel, others you don't. It sucks not knowing if it's going to hurt, but it also helps me because once i know it hurts it's already too late.
I can see this being useful especially on kids when they use those oversized needles.
Pretty much what helps me too. Being able to mentally bullshit doctors who say "It'll just sting a bit" has strange therapeutic value.
Needles don't even hurt anyways
unless you're a sissy
I hate needles but they're an essential part of healthcare.
Got blood drawn couple of times before and their needles are huge, poking you above your elbow. Also, when I was a kid, I braved getting a circumcision and they had to pierce my wiener three times for anesthesia. Before that I had lots of IV needles in my arm because I was infected with Malaria.
GREAT CHILDHOOD. I AM NOW A MAN
I'm glad I have prominent veins, unlike my mother. She says the doctors always have to poke her multiple times till they can find a vein.
These things hurt the most, nurse failed to inject the tube correctly 9 times in my hand. My hand was black the time they got it right.
Same thing happens to me, but with any type of needle. I've had at least a dozen different doctors and nurses use needles on me, and even with most of them saying "Oh you got great veins", they ALWAYS miss. Getting stabbed repeatedly with a needle feels like my arm is on fire from the inside out.
My entire arm will turn a dark purple after the fact and feel like it was crushed (like when you hit your finger with a hammer, but the entire arm). The pain is so bad that I have to drug myself up with pain killers and sleep for a day, because moving around hurts so much.
Purely psychological my ass.
I'm only afraid of those huge needle like the ones they use on your ass muscles, I've heard grown people cry due to that needle, it's huge because the ass muscles are really strong so a regular thin needle would break.
Also I had to have two lumbar punctures taken the moment I was born due to being really lightweight even though I wasn't premature when I was born, glad I don't remember that.
Don't be such a hard ass.

That doesn't hurt at all. I've had that done 4 times.
Finally!
I think it only really hurts when they hit a fucking nerve, a nurse at the hospital was taking blood samples from me because i had a really bad infection and they were getting WBC counts. She hit a nerve and i about punched her in the head.
