Isn't that what they're doing with episodic content of hl2?
Wow, not even close.
First of all, you don't require HL2 to operate the episodes.
Second of all, they add a great deal to the story, not just a bullshit ending.
my problem with the store is not the actual contents, but the motive behind creating the store in the first place, because there is really no reason for it to exist other than to rake in money
Economy 101, good sir?
Valve is a business. The aim for a business is getting lots of profit. Said store does not include any essential items but can still net them extra profit.
Jaehead, the MannCo business is just plain damn brilliant and profiting off of it is justified, given they have provided us with free class content/updates, maps, etc for those who do not wish to pay for them and will continue to do so.
Basically profiting off of vegetables that has Valve-name written all over it, when anyone can wait for their owns to blossom. So to speak.
Now, I am Gabe Newell and I had a dream, and I will hold on to it. Here's my (hypothetical) plan;
-I will release Team Fortress 3 in a week. It is awesome.
-I will release Class Updates randomly every other month or so
-Upon the first class update, a blog will be posted, MannCo Store will open, and the new stuff is added to the store and in-game dropping system.
-After a month or two, another Class Update is released, blogposted about, with the stuff added to the store and in-game dropping system.
After all classes have gotten their update, they either; A) Start working on a new row of class updates, B) Works on the next installment of the game franchise, or C) Prepares the "Final Update" and then work on the next installment of the (TF) franchise with the money they have been getting all along.
That's what I would call an ideal online shooter game business plan, that would last long and would be profitable and fun time working for the employees. I hope.

I know that it's the most profitable strategy, I don't like it
especially because I remember Valve themselves saying back in 2008/2009 that they want to push for free DLC
also Steam is extremely profitable for them as it is
come on stop defending the in-game store you know you'll like it better if it wasn't there
I'm really pissed that the PC version doesn't come with a free PS3 code to use on the PSN store or something, I hope they add the ability to redeem a PS3 version later.

What about a third option, namely not giving a fuck about a few cosmetic items that are completely optional and provide no gameplay benefits whatsoever?
Seriously, the people who complain about this probably have some issues with priorities.

you know you would like it better if it was just all available to you from the get go without paying extra
you know you would like it better if it was just all available to you from the get go without paying extra
I would, but that's not the point.
They aren't vital to the game. You can have just as much fun without them. Hell, there's maybe like a handful of people who will actually see it. They're optional, no gameplay benefits, they're purely there for showing off.
What about if you order a dessert then while in the middle of it the chef comes and adds chocolate frosting to it and says "IT'S A FREE UPDATE THAT ADDS STUFF YOU CAN'T COMPLAIN" and goes away. Are you just gonna sit there and go "oh well I'll eat it anyway"?
I would.
What if you don't like chocolate on your dessert? Same thing with the update. Some may like it, some wouldn't.
Your statement is still flawed.
I think that although it was pretty short, they filled it up with a continous stream of drama and awesome athmosphere, and it was polished and thought through so well, I was constantly enjoying it for the whole time. Now, please don't forget the coop part, which also takes up a few hours (I think, didn't play it yet). And think about all the maps that will be released for the coop part, FOR FREE!
I think, it was well worth the money for delivering me a entertaining, funny and yet dramatic story, incredible gameplay and holy shit everything is collapsing moments. And now, a cooperative part awaits me, which will be just plain awesome.
I would, but that's not the point.

maybe that's not what you were arguing but my point from the beginning was that I would prefer it if the in-game store wasn't there
and people who defend/are indifferent about this is basically the reason why companies keep pulling off things like this

Oh heavens no, companies are selling optional things for their game, what will I do?
I don't give a single fuck about the items/store being in this game. It's not like TF2 where there's apparently the problem with people showing off their stuff/gameplay affecting items/trading request spam/etc. It's a two player only cooperative mode, so chances are you're only playing with a pool of friends, if not only one other person.
No one is forcing you to buy shit, there's no incentive to buy shit, you don't have to buy jack shit. It's barely even noticeable.
Uh, I'm 7 hours into the campaign.
I guess I'm just slower than most people.

If my speed runs take under 5 hours, the game is too fast.
Everyone should write a good review on it to help boost up the score.
If my speed runs take under 5 hours, the game is too fast.
There's your problem. Try enjoying the game, look around, discover nice little gimmicks!
Okay, it's like if Valve gave you a PC with everything necessary to run it (speakers, keyboard, graphics, monitor, etc)...and then as soon as you got it they give you a free webcam too. Maybe you hate webcams and you didn't really want one, but hey you have one now.

You're the one crying over optional paid things, as trivial as it is.
Damn it, Valve, less than five hours is TOO SHORT FOR A SPEEDRUN!
That's what I read.
4 hours is short now? Maybe you should do something other than just games with your life?
[editline]19th April 2011[/editline]
Just saying...
As much as I despise microtransactions (like TF2 hats), those users are being unnecessarily demanding. Especially if it's five fucking dollars. A generous company like valve doesn't deserve 0/10 scores.
I'm really pissed that the PC version doesn't come with a free PS3 code to use on the PSN store or something, I hope they add the ability to redeem a PS3 version later.
why on earth are people expecting this?
what? do you expect Sony to give you a free game just because you got the PC counterpart?
You're the one crying over optional paid things, as trivial as it is.
Stop it. You're just being silly now. I don't mind the store myself but there are legitimate reasons for not wanting to have a store in game.

Just because you get the PC counterpart for getting the PS3 one.

It's a store you're not forced to go in.
Just because you get the PC counterpart for getting the PS3 one.
only because Valve owns the distribution for the PC version
Stop it. You're just being silly now. I don't mind the store myself but there are legitimate reasons for not wanting to have a store in game.
I agree, but when you're crying over 100% cosmetic items that a few people might see, that sounds like you just want something to complain about.

It's just cosmetic items that you don't have to use, does that really matter?
Fuck them I bought Portal 2 and :iia:
I agree, but when you're crying over 100% cosmetic items that a few people might see, that sounds like you just want something to complain about.
not really
I have valid reasons as to why I don't like the store, and you dismissing them by calling it 'crying' just shows that you cannot come up with a decent argument
