You're right, it doesn't have any bearing on gameplay. Regardless, Gabe has talked about how Valve wants to stick with the TF2 shop model where you can earn everything that's for sale. It's an admirable model in principle, and to see Valve shy away from that (once again, not sure if these gestures can be earned) model is a bit disappointing.
I hope we're all wrong and these gestures can actually be earned through normal play. That would settle this entire debate and calm all of the frantic bloggers/reviewers out there.
i haven't played the co op of portal two yet so forgive me if i'm wrong, but i thought the gestures didn't affect anything?
i haven't played the co op of portal two yet so forgive me if i'm wrong, but do the gestures affect the gameplay at all?
Nope, they don't. Just fun little additions.
Can't they temporarily lock the game and work on it?
Oh wait, its valve. They don't DO any work.
i haven't played the co op of portal two yet so forgive me if i'm wrong, but do the gestures affect the gameplay at all?
well unless you get all giddy about robots dancing no
Nope, they don't. Just fun little additions.
then why are they even worth mentioning? they're on the same level as hats, who cares?
wait scratch that people obviously care
You may be opposed to the concept of paid DLC but do you really think this is making Portal 2 a worse game in any significant way?
No.
then why are they even worth mentioning? they're on the same level as hats, who cares?
because it should have came with the game free
not really, no. you're not forced to buy any of them. and the cosmetic additions should be free, I can understand why the map packs cost money.
I agree i feel (even tho i dont like Map DLC) i can get more out of my money if i bought a Map pack then 3 items for the same price. but in the end you dont have to buy any of it so that argument is invalid
then why are they even worth mentioning? they're on the same level as hats, who cares?
You'll have to go back and read my last two posts. It has to do with content that should have been free from the get-go. It does matter to some people, regardless of the fact that it doesn't affect gameplay. Valve had an established way of doing this with the TF2 store that made it so you could earn everything that you can also buy. Made it hard for anyone to actually complain about it.
And besides, after you've done basically everything else there is to do in the game, it's fun to put time into earning extra features. They're apparently not letting them do that.
because it should have came with the game free
it's not like valve purposely withheld levels to release as dlc or something, they're silly hats
they're the equivilent of alt costumes in street fighter four, they don't affect anything unless you really want to dress up in a cowboy outfit
Ugh this discussion is pretty pointless.
It's, either you don't care or you don't like it.
I don't see the store as something bad, it's a way for Valve to make money. Valve is a large company, not some kind of innocent indie game company. Do you think they care a slightest bit about what you think about the virtual stores, when they are gaining massive profits from them? Probably not.
But as long as Valve keeps their friendly support, their excellent digital distribution software, their great and frequent sales, their fantastic interaction with its users(ARG, answering mails, tours etc) and keeps on making amazing rememberable games. I will always support them.
next on the valve business model, paid steam skins??? oh no swearing off steam forever

Read my last three posts, I think I've done a pretty good job at summing up the situation and arguing for both sides of the fence.
It's also entirely possible that you can earn all of the gestures that Valve is selling. The game just came out, so no one seems to know. If that's the case, this debate will be over and everyone goes home satisfied.

I didn't pay more than $40 for Steam, though.

Well, I'm not really complaining about charging money for the cosmetic updates (even though I do feel it's pretty stupid), I'm complaining about the double standards of the ones defending valve and attacking activision (dlc wise)

Pretty much this. There's too many positives for some trivial DLC to affect my view on Valve or Portal 2.
uh one adds something useful and the other is just shameless prostitution of the game?
you're being overly dramatic. They're little hats, in a first-person game.
you're being overly dramatic. They're little hats, in a first-person game.
thats why its so shameless and stupid
[editline]20th April 2011[/editline]
hell at least with ea the stuff you buy is actually useful, sims 3 item packs actually add content to the game for example, this doesnt add anything
i haven't played the co op of portal two yet so forgive me if i'm wrong, but i thought the gestures didn't affect anything?
Not unless you want to whore yourself for achievements. And, let's be honest here, who doesn't?

you're obviously smart enough to see how pointless they are

it isnt useful
even valve stated that hats are just a little bonus if you want to support valve
they are useless
useless
useless
useless
cosmetic items
support
valve
useless
no really, I don't know how to post this - this argument is going and going and after 16 pages you are still posting the same thing
whats the point
then don't fucking buy the hats, jesus christ

im not even that pissed off about the hats, that just adds insult to injury of releasing such a half assed game for 50 bucks
im not even that pissed off about the hats, that just adds insult to injury of releasing such a half assed game for 50 bucks
sorry i missed the part where YOU actually played through the entire game and its co-op mode????
i've put a collective hour into this game and its obvious just from that how well its done
I fucking HATE how instead of talking about great moments of portal 2

we cant stop bitching about game being short for speedrunners, additional cosmetic items not being free and this game being tf2 lite
goddamnit

Let me guess, you've either visited Metacritic or /v/.
If so, don't bother.

Avatar so very related.

Or Reddit, can't forget Reddit. The community there isn't too happy about this whole thing either.
You guys know you can get the items in-game without buying it right?
