could look at this as preserving oneself for eternity, but in one form or another, you'll return to nature. I think the best course is to do whatever helps family feel at ease, get some comfort and closure

Cremation is no better, ashes usually sit in urns, and burials rot in metal or wood boxes that take hundreds of years to truly get broken open to the natural world.
What's more earth-like than being a condensed gem of carbon, arguably earth's most "earth-y" elements?
