You city people with your unlimited fiber optic cable plans! You should just come out into the wilderness for a week and see how hard it really is! I mean, I can't download porn reliably! It's like the worst thing imaginable!
Why are the downloads going to be so big? 50gb? Games arnt that big..
Good. People should stop making CDs, they are a waste of space and are not essential anymore.
but australia
Wii U has been pretty good about downloads, but 1-2GB is pretty manageable (I downloaded zombiu, at 6GB it's not that bad) but literally fuck downloading a 50GB game I wouldn't even do that on my PC
Why are the downloads going to be so big? 50gb? Games arnt that big..
Comes with some identity stealing stuff too and also a day-later bricker failsafe app that detonates your PS4 a day after the warranty expires.
What Gamestop are you selling to? You'd have to sell them 100s of games to get $20 in my experience :v:
Been awhile since I actually sold something. Is $20 not the going rate for a game they're gonna throw on the shelf for $55 (plus the $40 online pass they may forget to tell you about) anymore?
Hopefully sony won't cap download rates on the ps4. Downloading a 10gb game on the ps3 shouldn't take 12+ hours.
That's true except for two things. 1. Collecting/Nostalgia 2. People with bandwidth limits 50 Gb's is a big deal on the second one.
50Gb is 1/3 my monthly limit on my DSL, but I only use DSL for gaming since my cable ISP is terrible. And downloading 50GB would disconnect my cable modem probably 100 times total during the download so I'd have to babysit it, since it doesn't automatically come back online without being unplugged sometimes I'll take discs for 50Gb games, personally
Wait, it's not like this on current consoles? God, they're way more primitive than I thought. The new generation can't come quickly enough

I mean, I'm not OPPOSED to digital distribution - hell, it's the way of the future - but until slow to adapt, technologically backwards-ass countries manage to catch up with the rest of the world (like here in Aus) you're still going to need the physical media option. I get 200 GB of downloads a month, and between myself, my dad, and my brother and sister (mum doesn't really count because she rarely uses the internet) that 200 GB goes really quickly. Hell, my 'fair share' of that 200 GB would be gone with ONE game download in a month.

And on that future, I am pessimistic, we will probably see increased prices, lower data caps, and slower internet probably.
50gb is a third of my entire download limit for the month. For a single game I just can't do that.
The Internet is currently too slow to download 50GB per game.
I feel bad for people with caps, I really can't believe some countries still have them. Where I live, bandwidth caps only exist on cell phone data.
Yay for fast internet. 50gb should take me about an hour or something if Sony allows me to max my download speed. Thing is though, that at least with the PS3. Full games are immensely overpriced and never drop in price.
Wait, it's not like this on current consoles? God, they're way more primitive than I thought. The new generation can't come quickly enough
Not having every game available for download is hardly primative. The current gen in general isn't primative, it's literally where PCs were around 2005, outdated yes, primative? No, that's a stupid exaggeration. The PS3 and 360 have been offering game downloads for a little while now, the choice is a bit limited, usually the most recent AAA games, but they've started to make the transition anyway. Having the entire catalogue available will be pretty awesome if you want a game right now (especially on the PS4 with the playable download feature).
Now comes a tradeoff, do you want to download games from the comfort of your home but have no physical disc or cool physical preorder/special edition stuff, and have it tied to your account, or do you want discs and cool shit you can resell Case by case (hheheh) basis but still. Interesting thing they're doing.
Well this is going to kill my bandwidth, I only got a 200GB limit, but atleast Sony mentioned in there coneference that you can play the game before the entire. Example: 20% on Knack download you can play the first two hours of the game. I think that's what Sony was trying to say with that feature.
I think I'm going to get a PS4 instead of an Xbox 720
But we literally know nothing about the next Xbox...
I think I'm going to get a PS4 instead of an Xbox 720
But aren't you going to wait to see what MS has got to offer?
Wait, it's not like this on current consoles? God, they're way more primitive than I thought. The new generation can't come quickly enough
Not all games are available but a good sum of the AAA games are
Didn't they say that you don't have to download the entire game to play the first part of it?
Steam's been doing this semi-reliably for their earliest titles since around 2008, and I'm fairly sure Origin had it from the beginning. I'd be surprised if Sony didn't have it planned for the PS4.
Damn right, optical media is deprecated. Hell, I'd prefer games to come on USB flash drives or cartridges over disks. I've been doing great without a DVD drive for 2 years now. [t]http://i.imgur.com/CEe1Srg.jpg[/t] Bare in mind I had a 4Mbit down connection for one of those years, I just left steam on overnight if I wanted a game, no biggie.
Optical media still has a place, in the exact same way magnetic media still has a place. Thinking otherwise is silly and you shouldn't call yourself any form of educated with computers if you think this. Optical disks are great for backups when you need a lot but don't have enough space for a ton of tape drives (which work nicely for system backups) or hard drives, plus as they can be (fairly) randomly accessed, especially compared to tapes, you can use them to back up anything really. The capacity issues are being solved with things like multiple-layer blu-ray, but now we are introducing speed issues as the data becomes dense and hard to read at high speeds. Yeah cloud storage is pretty sweet, it's nice to have as it doesn't take up space, but it is not the end-all solution to storage issues. The rule is have your shit backed up locally (redundant HDD, external media), on a internet service, and physically off site. Plus I just find having a disk so much more convenient whenever I can, the cloud stored data is not going to be there forever, and having a shelf of (sometimes) nice boxart is pretty sweet.
I have an onsite and offsite file server where I push off my important files (I don't have many of them) I've always found disks a complete arse on for backups.
Servers are good for offsite stuff, but having a disk, that can survive the entire system just going "nope" is a pretty good idea too. The current optical media is pretty arse for backups of entire systems, they aren't very fast in most cases, and the ones that are don't hold much. But that's why we can improve the technology :v: That post wasn't an attack on you, but just a general "yo, optical media is still useful".
whatever sony, just take my money [editline]26th February 2013[/editline]
Wait, it's not like this on current consoles? God, they're way more primitive than I thought. The new generation can't come quickly enough
most games are made for download on xbox at day of release or a few weeks after these days, usually. On PS3 this isn't really viable because the size of the games are quite a bit larger since they use blu-ray. that's my understanding at least. remember our current gen consoles are like what, 7 years old now?
Well, here's to hoping Sony doesn't make the stupid decision like with the PS3 at launch where they gave us the choice of either a 20GB or 60GB HDD, neither of which where big enough for all the potential data you were going to put on it. I agree that something like 500GB should be the minimum. Only thing is, I recall hearing about triple and quad layered Blu-rays a few years ago, and I'm curious as to whether or not that technology will be adopted. Will we be seeing 100GB games? That would really be sucky to download, pending if it was compressed at all.
at the time 60GB HDD seemed excessive as there was no precedent at all for downloadable games, even DLC was barely a "thing" never mind downloading full games. beyond that at the time most games were only around 2GB

The new generation can't come quickly enough
I believe PSN has some full budget games available for download. There's plenty of large games there too, uncharted 1 and 2 and both infamous games for example. PS3 exclusives go up to 50 and uncharted 1 is like 22 gigs, same with 2. Heck, Resistance: Fall of Man is 15 gigs and that was a launch title, 2006.
