Flash was such a magical thing back in the early-mid 2000s though. It was so lightweight for what you got. Nice smooth animations and games backed by a pretty powerful programming language. It's definitely out of date and a resource hog compared to today's standards, but I'll miss it's wacky charm. It got me my current job because I made a really crazy animated flash website, which I made in like 12 hours due to how easy it was to program animations in it. RIP
I'd like by chance to see this website, if anything.
Flash is and always has been a massive pile of shit, so I am only surprised this didn't come sooner.
Mozilla are working on a plugin that can run Flash SWF files through HTML5, loads of groups like to say that we should get rid of Flash, Mozilla are actually taking action.
It won't be 100% capable for a while though no doubt. But its a pretty cool project.
The funny thing about this all, is Adobe actively supports the movement to HTML5 because when you create something in Flash, they give you the option to actively convert it into a HTML5 compatible format, while it doesn't work for everything, things like games and video it works flawlessly for and I just don't get why the feature is rarely used.
I use flashcontrl on Chrome, flash things only run when I click them
You don't need another extension for this, just go to settings -> show advanced settings -> content settings -> choose "let me choose when to run plugin content"
I like the Shumway project that Mozilla are working on, basically reimplements flash through HTML5 and JS.
It's enough to run most simple Flash games and videos, but not anything demanding yet.
Edit:
My laptop is 100% flash-less.
Very annoying. I still have to have flash installed for a few sites I go to and I don't particularly care for my browser going 'UETHGOETH OMG FLASH HAS A HOLE OR THREE IN IT WE'VE YOINKED CONTROL AWAY FROM YOU AND BLOCKED IT'.
Bitch please. My computer my choice. If I want a potentially insecure plugin running you best fucking run it. I'm well aware flash has more holes in it than a colander the size of Texas.
To disable it in chrome, you go to chrome://plugins right?
Chrome runs in a sandbox with their own flash plugin called Pepper Flash, there isn't really any reason to disable it.

or just enable it in settings?
flash is outdated and pointless these days
better we killed off programs like java/flash for new ones
Every time Opera detects there's a flash update, it immediately disallows loading older version. At this point I only keep it for twitch.tv
Use livestreamer.
Use porn sites that are up to date with modern tech?
Those exist?

If Boxcar 2D can be considered a benchmark, then shumway works, but is slow as all hell.
I'm still impressed there hasn't been done much effort in a replacement flash player, since Adobe's Flash Player is bloated as fuck and Adobe doesn't care about doing a efficient rewrite.
That's because Apple HLS isn't part of the HTML5 specification, it's yet another proprietary software system that Apple has pushed.
Just like canvas then?
Oh great...Spotify uses Flash
Goddamn
What I'm annoyed at is that many sites do a direct plugin check for the Adobe Flash plugin, so Shumway is not given any chance to work on them.
Anything that's just flash animation/menus, or using flash for API features available there (clipboard access, audio/video, file storage, etc), or any other non-demanding flash usage, work perfectly through Shumway.
And besides, it's hard to find demanding flash games nowadays, those all tend to be HTML5 or native through plugins now.
my job's scheduling software, i shit you not, runs entirely on flash player. it's the only way to see what days i'm working and to request time off.
That's almost as bad as mine: A scheduling web-app that only works on Internet Explorer. I don't know how it's even possible, but on any browser other than Internet Explorer (Chrome, Safari, Firefox, all no go's), my work's scheduling software ceases to function.
Is the most recent version of Flash compromised?

This isn't unheard of. My router is the same way. It appears to work perfectly fine in any browser other than Internet Explorer but for some baffling reason you can't actually change any settings unless you're using IE.
or just enable it in settings?
I did that. I shouldn't have had to do that, though. Firefox should know based on how much I've rummaged through the settings most people don't even know it has, the addons I run, that I'm not some clueless little old grandma who can barely figure out how to open links. I know enough that I don't need or want my browser babysitting me.

I don't disagree, but until a few sites I frequent stop using it I don't have a choice but to keep it installed.
Should I uninstall Flash or just disable it?
I've had flash on "activate only" for months since youtube moved to html5. there are twoi have it set to force activate on but otherwise flash is no longer part of my browser experience and it's great.
Use livestreamer.
this is a good suggestion, it works very well though it's a command line application and you need a player to push through. Actually doesnt vlc has native streaming capability on its own?

Of course it does. It's just that it can't get the actual media location from the URL by default. I assume that livestreamer simply launches the process with the correct URL.
You could also use bog's awesome stream2vlc script to get that URL and paste it into a VLC window.
There's also a third way of getting the URL of a stream/VOD by using the dev tools of your browser (F12), going into the Network tab and looking for the index.m3u8 file, but that requires Flash in the first place.

Ah, what about steam tho? I have flash player installed but I can uninstall that right?
Seriously the adobe pre-release forums are on fire, what you basicaly have there is a bunch of people that think that linux should not exist, that think that mac has more marketshare than windows and that is mainly used by designers and that flash is still a good thing and that html5 is shitty.
They told me "bu...but you can install flash as a plugin".
No shit, but how the fuck am I supposed to install flash as a plugin in an obscure browser/architecture?.
Good. Flash needs to die.
Until there are alternatives to creating animation easily for artists, it can't die.

It's good that you're special and tech literate but these changes aren't made for you. They're made to protect the majority who don't have time to bother to keep up with this stuff.
Until there are alternatives to creating animation easily for artists, it can't die.
Hmm, what about mp4?
Hmm, what about mp4?
I don't mean format.
I mean literal animation program.
