I love how the one time a military vehicle of ours survives a crash, it's the least possible convenient of instances.
Stealthawk in Jalalabad.
What you are saying applies to limited conflicts. When civilians cease to be a limitation and instead become the target, as is the case with an actual war, the game changes significantly. The United States brings a tiny fraction of its military might down on any single opponent, but if the flood gates were to ever open, bad BAD things would happen very quickly. The damage a single B-52 can deal, even without a nuclear payload, is mind boggling. Strategic bombers exist to destroy population centers, a task at which they excel above all others. Technology aside, the US dominates simply because it fields classes of equipment that other nations simply can't afford. The US is also virtually alone in possessing a navy that can cross an ocean and wage war. Do not mistake me for saying that we should take off the gloves, as that would obviously be gruesome beyond description, but don't forget that we fight with a set of very padded gloves either, as that houses its own dangers.
I make no mistake in thinking the US is incredibly well armed, we certainly pump enough money into defense. What I'm saying is our leaders and our generals are too overconfident in our military because of our technological advantage. A good army is worth nothing if it's being lead by a terrible general. A terrible army is a serious threat if it's being lead by a good general. Nations have always paid a hefty price when they ignore the advice or strategies of their good generals. Look at the Third Reich and Rommel. Yet the US consistently falls into the same honey trap of ego that nations have since the beginning of time.
It's like a childhood scenario to me. The United States made a really cool paper airplane that landed in Iran's backyard.

Give us our stuff back Iran.
Yeah I know, but the US army report was it went down over Afghanistan due to a technical problem. But the one Iran showed looked like it'd never even been flown.
When it is in someone's interests to lie, then I would not take their word for it. Your better off looking at other sources to see whether it is real or not. As much as we love to pretend that anyone who isn't an ally of the United States is some sort of barbaric medieval country, Iran actually has a rather sophisticated military program. Much like China, they are quickly rising to NATO standards on the fronts that they haven't yet succeeded or matched us in. Both of these countries have independently developed UAV drones. As much as we like to claim that the Chinese drone that crashed proves how bad they are, think about the fact that most nations don't even have drones to crash in the first place.
The United Kingdom has about half that total budget for 2012 at 700 billion instead of 1,340 billion and we're spending less than 10% on defence: http://www.ukpublicspending.co.uk/government_expenditure.html
Where are you putting it? Education?
Mister, Can we have our ball back please? [editline]14th December 2011[/editline]
Where are you putting it? That's what America gets for throwing that baseball through Iran's window last week.

Iran has the bonus of once being a US ally and thereby has a dwindling stockpile of 40 year old American hardware, which it is also trying to reverse engineer with....interesting results. To those arguing that the drone Iran has is either fake or just a stripped down piece of junk, why wouldn't Obama just say that instead of asking for it back? If the drone is fake, why not call Iran's bluff? If it's useless, just tell us it was useless.
