• Irving 9th-grader arrested after taking homemade clock to school: 'So you tried to make a bomb?'

What's funny is that in middle school, for a play in theatre arts, I actually made a prop bomb and brought it to school. And nobody cared.
We all have bombs in our pockets. (cellphones) YUP LOOKS LIKE A BOMB TO ME.:freakout:
hey your watch in your hand is like a bomb because it has a clock!! no seriously this is so wrong and racism
If I was a teacher, I would be SO EMBARRASSED to accuse my student of making a bomb and showing it to me, especially being that it's in a lunch box. But then again, I have common sense.
Couldn't they have just taken the clock apart on the spot in order to confirm that it wasn't a bomb?
that doesn't change that he made something that kind of looks like a bomb while being muslim, which as we all know is probably a crime
You just took an intelligent human being and gave him a reason to hate humanity. You really shouldn't have done that...
I don't know the whole story. I wasn't there. But based on everything I know so far...
So the 14-year-old missed the student council meeting and took a trip in handcuffs to juvenile detention. His clock now sits in an evidence room. Police say they may yet charge him with making a hoax bomb — though they acknowledge he told everyone who would listen that it’s a clock.
I really think that people were just looking for an excuse so they could throw a brown person in jail.
This kid won't have any criminal charged and will be allowed back in school because that's the obviously rational and right thing to do because I refuse to live in an absurdist, onion mews reality where people do anything else. Also, that pic off him in cuffs. He's wearing a NASA shirt for god sake! It's like the institution is purposely crushing the soul of a future scientist.

The school is just being dickheads. If they truly thought it was a bomb the teacher wouldn't have handled it, the school would have been evac'd and we would have Law Enforcement, Fire & EMS, Bomb Squad, ETC. Area surrounding the school would have likely been evac'd or locked down. Instead they just call the cops and they show up to hassle the kid and do the schools bidding. It makes me a little sad when these cops could have seriously used common sense and said "hey it looks like a clock, it is a clock!" Instead they arrested him for a "bomb" hoax which you can't prove.

yeah with the POTUS on his side I don't see how this can go well for the school and police. granted that cops are harder to touch, i envision every school staff involved in the ordeal to have their ass handed to them if this goes to court. really makes me wonder how stupid these people are. regardless of their probably racist beliefs, you have to be pretty fucking stupid to do something like this in today's political climate. people and the media are out to crucify yet these guys in school and policing positions still act like they're untouchable. unreal.
I bet the police and school are going to issue an apology to save face because of the massive backlash and the fucking POTUS supporting him.
Once you get presidential recognition in a situation like this you are just about untouchable. This has to be the best scenario in how this could of ended.
I bet the police and school are going to issue an apology to save face because of the massive backlash and the fucking POTUS supporting him.
I wonder how fucked the kid would be if this didn't happen.
Here is what the clock looked like for thoes who did not look at the whole article. [t]http://www.dallasnews.com/photos/20150916-nm_irvingpd_al09.ece/BINARY/w940/NM_IrvingPD_AL09[/t] It does kind of look like one of thoes fake movie bombs TBH. :v: I could see how someone who is seeing terrorists under every bed could be confused. Freaking stupid.
I bet the police and school are going to issue an apology to save face because of the massive backlash and the fucking POTUS supporting him.
They can apologize all they want, doesn't mean anyone will or should accept it.
I wonder how fucked the kid would be if this didn't happen.
They already dropped the charges before this If I'm reading the article correctly.
This is so disheartening, I hope it doesn't discouraged the kid from making more cool stuff in future
Chris Hadfield also supported by inviting him to a science show in Toronto: https://twitter.com/Cmdr_Hadfield/status/644177398553030656
They already dropped the charges before this If I'm reading the article correctly.
we're also talking about the fact he's in middle school. Shit would get him picked on like hell so long as he stayed in that area, if the only thing that happened was he got taken out of the school for an alleged bomb threat then returned and nobody said much about it. Turning this around and it getting him invited to hang out with the president (edit- and now a famous astronaut) for being smart and wanting to encourage others to look to science and engineering? Kid's morale is 1000% and he's probably gonna be known around the school as the smart kid who got recognized by the president go you, Ahmed
Bet the assholes at the school as well as the police feel really fucking stupid now. He has the President on his side, that speaks volumes.
Is this a fucking joke? Look at the clock: I think its reasonable that the clock could easily be mistaken for something else. Try bringing that into an airport and see if the exact same thing happens. The kid was taken into custody pending investigation, where he has since been released after they determined it wasnt a threat.
It looks like a bomb that's missing the bomb part. If you had a big lump wrapped in tape or a few liquid jugs along with it, then it might be concerning. It's not like the kid walked around with it secretly. He said it was a clock from the start. No one had any reason to suspect it was otherwise. It looks like the guts of a generic alarm clock put in a small carrying case. I was expecting something with an arduino. A touch disappointed but still rather cool.
This is so disheartening, I hope it doesn't discouraged the kid from making more cool stuff in future
I hope the kid isn't gonna have this overshadow his own achievements later down the road.
Interview with the police said (paraphrasing) "we tried to question the juvenile and all he would tell us was that it was a clock. He wouldn't tell us the purpose of the device, why he built it..." IT'S A FUCKING CLOCK
I'm pretty glad this happened because it'll help us get over 9/11 fear mongering.
Is this a fucking joke? Look at the clock: clock I think its reasonable that the clock could easily be mistaken for something else. Try bringing that into an airport and see if the exact same thing happens.
First off, Ahmed clearly stated that it was just a clock. Second, schools are not airports. There are many, many things you can't bring with you in an airport that would be allowed (or are at least not expressly forbidden) in a school setting. Also, I understand a moment of uncertainty as to the exact components of the clock or not realizing it is one at first (though if I see numbers like that I'm going to assume it's a clock), but the police should NOT have been involved in this situation. At most there should have been a confiscation of the clock by the school until it was deemed safe, and then given back to Ahmed.
Anyone that thinks a real bomb would have giant LED's on the front has been taking Hollywood action movies way to seriously.

I think its right that the police got involved, but not ok that its gotten so far to where the kid had to be taken in. It would take 30 seconds to open the thing up and investigate. If he came in with the clock built into a small housing and not a case with wires and shit coming out of it, there would never have been an issue to begin with. In high school I built stupid electronics and clocks and whatever else I could find schematics for. STEM is great and more need to be involved with it... That being said, you come in with a briefcase full of electronics into an already assbackwards Texas public school, you're going to be met with the "see something, say something" attitude. Practically every electronic device looks vaguely similar to the technology illiterate and it's barbaric that an educational institution is assuming that anything electronic is a bomb. [thumb]http://i39.tinypic.com/1zp5szt.jpg[/thumb] This is an actual IED. Guess which part is actually a bomb, the explosive cannister or the miscellaneous wires and electronics? Not to mention the fact that the officer said some racist shit about expecting it was him despite him having no record of ever causing trouble
