You can't even walk close to one of those substations without feeling something in the air.

Try it sometime, you can literally feel it.

If you ever pass by a movie set, try putting your foot on the cable.
It's shielded, but the cable feels like it's moving under your feet, and that's way lower voltage than in a substation.
