But then say you want to use it for something other than a facebook machine. Quite a reasonable request isn't it? but the only software you can find for it is some obscure tar.gz that require some command line shit to do. the average human being would give up, eventually realize that a LOT of linux is like this, and then fucking quit and get a more user-friendly operating system.
https://www.youtube.com/user/OsFirstTimer This is a mum with no IT background trying out every single OS out there, she manages just fine and loves package managers because she doesn't has to go around on the web looking for an 'installer' for software she wants. She types the name or category in the package manager, gets a list of all matching software packages, clicks install and is done. Just stop now okay.
It's the exact same under Ubuntu. Open up the Software center, find what you want to install with the search, and click install. Simple. No further instruction needed. If you honestly expect everything to work the exact same as on windows you're just being deliberately obtuse. EDIT: My automerge
Except most of the software center sucks donkey balls. Not to mention the fact that Videogame support for linux is less than even OSX

You want to do spreadsheets? Well, you have libreoffice, also on the software center. You want to play videos? Well, you have VLC right there on the software center. Perhaps you want to code, well, just grab emacs or eclipse, also on the software center. Skype? Gotcha covered, there's a .deb file for that, just click it and install it. Do you have ANY idea on the topic you're discussing, or are you just doing this to get a few reactions out of the linux users?
Exactly. Look at that. What the fuck IS that? You think Grandpa Joe is gonna look at that and go "YUP THAT MAKES SENSE".
His screenie is a bad example, he's effectively decompiled the ubuntu equivalent of an install binary there. Regardless, only in more extreme cases will you need to do that, and on top of that, I think it looks strikingly similar to many popular Windows decompressing programs. Plus, there is still the right click, extract to here command.
No; that's LINUX. On Windows and Mac, it all installs itself. And it's easy too! That's why everybody uses it.
And most mainstream softwares on Linux does the exact same thing. RPMs, DEBs, all accomplish the same goal, automatic installation.
But the basic formula for using ANYTHING on windows has remained the same (except when 8 fucked it up with the metro menu): Double click to run and install shit. Simple. No further instruction needed.
Except for the countless dialogue boxes past that asking for where it installs to, options, terms of service (which oh yeah a lot of linux stuff doesn't have that past the basic GPL license), start menu folders, and then it prompts about the readme.
Before I address this, I'd just like to point out the fact that your choice of words when arguing makes you sound like a huge nerd.
Its a forum started around a nerd game, ya doofus.
Anyways, since the entire system is aimed at enabling the open-source movement, having to compile everything really fucks with user accessibility. I personally hate OSX, but I can see why people would rather use a mac than something as fucking complicated as Linux. I understand its appeal towards people who spend all their times with computers, but for normal human beings, linux (even the pretty-looking ubuntu) is foreign to most people.
You don't have to compile everything, in fact you compile very rarely these days. Last thing I compiled was a set of libraries for an incredibly obscure and depreciated filesystem format used in MP3 players from several years ago. Exactly.
Jesus fucking christ the way you talk makes you sound like a virgin
And you sound like a fuckass.
Except most of the software center sucks donkey balls. Not to mention the fact that Videogame support for linux is less than even OSX
That's an opinion. And most of the types of software that a normal garden variety user would use has a decent version available in the Software Center. The number of games available on the platform is irrelevant. Most people don't game beyond solitaire, Facebook games, and consoles. And Linux support is growing ever since Steam for Linux became available.
https://www.youtube.com/user/OsFirstTimer This is a mum with no IT background trying out every single OS out there, she manages just fine and loves package managers because she doesn't has to go around on the web looking for an 'installer' for software she wants. She types the name or category in the package manager, gets a list of all matching software packages, clicks install and is done. Just stop now okay.
Not having to search the web for x program also solves another problem for novice users: Accidentally downloading and installing malware that looks like what they were trying to install. Google has a bad habit of letting advertisers push their way to the top of the search results and easily push adware/spyware/malware.
You install steam, and then you find out that 90% of the games aren't supported lol
Why exactly would 99% of computer users care about that exactly? :downs:
You install steam, and then you find out that 90% of the games aren't supported lol
Then you install wine, and get support for a good chunk of these 90%. (there's a deb for that! and methinks its also on the software center!) I'll repeat, Do you have ANY idea on the topic you're discussing, or are you just doing this to get a few reactions out of the linux users? The point is: Linux is mostly aimed towards aspie basement dwellers who think something complicated a f is for the average american, which it isn't. Linux will never be #1, cry your little baby tears.
Then you install wine
Stop right there lol. Wine fucking BLOWS. [editline]9th December 2013[/editline]
And your argument is invalid now
God you fucking nerds and these words. "Invalid". Holy shit have you ever touched a girl?

From an IT stand point, i dont want to recommend windows 8 because it will make me look bad. 90% of how a user sees something like a piece of software forever lies in their first impressions. Imagine sitting down to windows 8 for the first time as a 40-50 year old office employee who is used to standard windows everything... It would get frustrating... Quick. That leaves the users with a bad taste in their mouth and a particularly sour outlook on the OS as a whole. Which then becomes my "problem" and i appear to be an idiot for recommending a shitty (in their opinion) OS. That being said if the user was warned before hand of the differences, they seem to take it in stride. Its the users who are surprised and don't like major changes that are the most difficult. TLDR: Windows 7 all day for businesses; There is no reason to go to 8.
Stop right there lol. Wine fucking BLOWS. [editline]9th December 2013[/editline] God you fucking nerds and these words. "Invalid". Holy shit have you ever touched a girl?
Please get out of this thread. I'm beginning to lose sight of you under all those boxes.
Please get out of this thread. I'm beginning to lose sight of you under all those boxes.
yes because this thread is of the utmost importance and a very serious matter that actually fucking matters and my being here is somehow degrading it in quality
Not to mention the fact that Videogame support for linux is less than even OSX
There are thousands of games for both Mac and Linux, it's just most of them aren't "AAA" games, they're homebrew, ports of older games or games made by indie studios.
The point is: Linux is mostly aimed towards aspie basement dwellers who think something complicated a f is for the average american, which it isn't.
God you fucking nerds and these words. "Invalid". Holy shit have you ever touched a girl?
Says the person posting in a Windows 8 market-share thread about how much Linux sucks.
so terrible games. [editline]9th December 2013[/editline]
Says the person posting in a Windows 8 market-share thread about how much Linux sucks.
I dont see the correlation
A vast majority of teachers and such here at my high school run Windows Xp on their class room machines. We in the IT Dept. sent out a batch of machines to some of them that we had refurbished with Windows 8 and everyone that has gotten one has had a blast with it. It's just really depends on how well you adapt to change.
Hi, my name is proboardslol and I think if I spout enough of 1337 windows ownage opinions I have heard about linux (I know all about linux btw, used a livecd once to partition my harddrive), I will eventually be able to prove I am indeed a skilled minded person with major posting ownage skills with my attitude! Nah, get the fuck out.

Their world is about to be turned upside down when microsoft cuts support next year.
no thats you
"no u" What are you, 9 years old?
Please stop feeding the troll. It's obvious by this point that he's only in it to call people "aspie virgins".
