Reminds me, my parents were watching the news before they landed on mars a few days back, and the reporter chick asked if they were expecting to find fossils... Fossils... The guy from Nasa was totally thinking "You fucking dumbass", you could tell under his feigned smile.
I can't remember, but I think it was Fox News. Wouldn't surprise me.
what? it's a legitimate question, you can find fossilized bacteria on earth, and while it may not be likely to find actual evidence of microbial life, one of the stated aims of MSL is to "identify features that may represent the effects of biological processes".

I don't even begin to understand why you'd think that question was stupid, even if she meant fossils of larger plant or animal life - all it takes is to explain why it's not likely to find those things
Awww, that's nice but a tad bit underwhelming.
I would be more of for sending a spaceship which would send a nice fat nuke to surface and examine the chunks. (it's more scientific that it sounds).
The Ellen Ripley method, I like it

We did that with the moon where we just dropped a couple rocket boosters on it and 'examined' the blasts.

and like a Phoenix NASA will rise out of the ashes to its former glory

Don't you mean blast off to its former glory?
ha ha those damn rock fuckers in their damn underground sand layers thought they could be safe from our mobile laser gun
soon our hunters will be on the planet looking beneath the surface for more rocks to kill
It wouldn't be a NASA thread without the Sad Spirit comic.
