I never said it was only successful because of the Lord of the Rings, I said that the popularity of The Lord of the Rings and of Game of Thrones helped Skyrim get exposure from casual players who otherwise wouldn't have looked at it. Also, just because people around you weren't hyped for The Hobbit doesn't mean there wasn't stupid levels of hype for it. I wasn't impressed by the trailers and I couldn't escape people praising it before it was even out.
The last Lord of the Rings movie came out in 2003, Skyrim came out in 2011. I doubt hype from LotR was so strong it helped Skyrim sell well all those years later if it didn't do the same for Oblivion in 2006.
This isn't a portable, though. There is no way that thing would ever be usable as a portable device. With my first look at the thing I see only problems.
Nintendo made a console based on those crappy little snap-on devices you can buy to attach to a tablet. It's like they built something designed to fail. Not necessarily by sales, but structurally. Structurally it's built to fail.
Yeah, it's not a portable, that's why a big part of the announcement video was specifically showing that it's portable.
I wonder if there will be car chargers sold for the portable part like this thing for the Gameboy.

Just indefinitely play games in the back seat on a really long roadtrip.
neat looking thing for sure. for someone like me tho i cant picture ever needing to take my video game console with me on the go and thats like half of the consoles schtick. if they released an all-in-one integrated version without docking at a lower price, id prolly pick one up.

Switch Dash
Repost from other thread
So take this with an atom sized grain of salt but these apparently are the Switch's specs. They apparently came from nintendo's developer website

That doesn't seem right to me. Why would they make a hybrid console using old architecture when the 10-series has been a massive boon to mobile computers? From what I heard it's a Pascal Tegra POC. My guess is that there's one CPU inside the console itself, and a 1040gts or 1050gtx series, and maybe the dock has a 1060gtx. It'd stream the GPU output to the console I'd think? Either that or the console itself has a dedicated processor and graphics, and the console has an APU.
My Biggest complaint is sliding the tablet screen into the docking station.
I am insanely protective of screens on all my devices and that just screams like a way to scratch them.
I bet the first third-party accessory will be a slot cozy for the side that faces the screen, with gaps cut perfectly for any necessary contact ports or whatever on the inside. Even assuming this:
Never because I assume Nintendo would be smart enough to idiot-proof the act of slotting it in.
I hope. Maybe put some rubber or something between the screen and the plastic.

what would be awesome is the dock and actual console being sold seperatly
I bet there'll be third-party docks as soon as China reverse-engineers how the Switch tablet communicates with the dock and exactly what it needs it for -- although they may be limited like only passing video out and providing wall power rather than amplifying the console's processing power (if the real thing does).
This thing looks sweet, like Nintendo took all the best parts of their "experiments" of the last 10 years and assembled them into one baller do-it-all machine. I didn't get a Wii U because it seemed like it was just a Wii with one more gimmick tossed in, but Nintendo finally went all-in on the Switch and I'm totally down for it.
My guess is that you are expected to have a charger with you for any long duration mobile play.
That controller looks uncomfortable as all hell.
I am throwing The Hobbit under the banner of The Lord of the Rings. Read my fucking post where I said "the Hobbit was announced by that time and came out a year later", that's the Lord of the Rings hype I was talking about.
Yeah Oblivion didn't get a boost from The Lord of the Rings films because it came out 3 years after they were done. But you also have to consider that gaming wasn't nearly as popular in 2006 as it was in 2011 and that Skyrim came out when 2 huge fantasy works had brought the genre to the public's attention.
so is it streaming to the handheld screen when you take it far away? like in the very first scene of the trailer
There's no way it can stream from the home to a passenger on the plane, it'd have to be its own thing.
thats what i thought, but it looks too small too house as much as that main holder/console from that scene as well, what he removes the screen from. i assumed that was the main console since it looks big enough to actually hold the hardware
so is it streaming to the handheld screen when you take it far away? like in the very first scene of the trailer
From what I understand the majority (or the entirety) of the processing is done on the handheld and the base just sends the signal to the TV. Maybe the base has a graphics card so games can render at a higher resolution or with better graphics when it's plugged in, but there's no information on how it works yet.
It may overclock when connected to the TV, since it can sacrifice battery power.

The hardware of the device is infact inside the tablet-like screen. The dock just enables playing on the TV and probably a performance increase.
Also, it looks like there are USB ports on the dock. I wonder if these will enable USB storage like the WiiU?
It seemed the games had lower framerate when it became "handheld" in the trailer, so it may switch to different graphical settings
Might also be that the dock has it's own graphics card or other components.
I am not only curious about the specs and the price of the console itself, but as well as the price of the games. Since they seem to be some sort of modified small card, will they be cheaper?
I am not only curious about the specs and the price of the console itself, but as well as the price of the games. Since they seem to be some sort of modified small card, will they be cheaper?
Cheaper than what? Discs? No fucking chance. Discs are extremely cheap to produce.
It's irrelevant really, because games are priced on what they cost to make, not just on what they cost to print. That's why Steam isn't very cheap either.
*Snip Placeholder price, move along*

Most Wii U games were priced at the same range as PS4 or Xbox One games, so I guess it would still be in the ball park of that. At least it seems so in my country.

Apparently the Switch is priced at 1220 USD or 1116 EUR, here in Norway. That's an expensive device, I guess the portability of playing Skyrim is on the same level as those gaming laptops which are overpriced too.

I'm sure that's just a default price for Cdon. There's no freaking way they'd be that expensive.

That has to be a placeholder price. There's no universe where a $1220 console would sell more than 10 units.

Oh right forgot about the whole placeholder thing for a second and about the fact hat CDON is usually the first to announce reservations for products that just got announced in my country.
Whoops, what do you guys think the price point will be at though? Vita initial pricing or will it be below $500?
Everybody's always saying that controllers are too small, those tiny 2-player things aren't gonna fly with anybody.
Except Trump maybe.
i'm just happy we're finally gonna get a big-screen monster hunter game again
that would be my actual only reason for getting one of these

it's so small I wouldn't be surprised if you could at least supplement it with USB, though in any case you might be interested in a power converter to be able to plug anything in on trips

Baby hands triumph again
So how will this function as an actual tablet? Will I be able to sideload movies, music, books, comics? I'd seriously consider one if that were the case.
