So how will this function as an actual tablet? Will I be able to sideload movies, music, books, comics? I'd seriously consider one if that were the case.
given you can do it with 3ds and wiiu, I'd expect apps for hulu/netflix/youtube/amazon video/MP3s and so on. Books/comics I couldn't say

Its all up in the air but the dock has two USB slots and according to the leaked specs it is ARM based which has only been used on Android + Linux and the screen is apparently a touch-screen.
Best case scenario? It is basically a tablet with a built in controller and console games, which sounds amazing.
[editline]20th October 2016[/editline]
Its also important to remember Nintendo has been wanting to really get into the mobile market full force and are a Japanese company.
Japanese people absolutely love their smartphones and tablets, way more than we already do.
To me? Its a 2 + 2 scenario.
Skyrim
NCL always makes a show of 3rd party support the first year and TES games have always been batshit popular in China, Japan and Korea. Pretty much a perfect fit for their marketing.
Wait it does have a touch screen? Awesome, this device sounds right up my alley.
I can only pray at this point that they might port Dark Souls 3 or make some soulslike. From the look of the console and the publishers list I'm already sold.

Touch screen support for this would literally change everything and in a way that would leave me entirely clueless on how they would make it work
Altogether, there's some skepticism about the hardware at its core, but with no stupid control gimmicks (in the sense of controlling games, not the controller itself) and a pretty straightforward and broad appeal with no real strings attached, the hype looks pretty damn strong. It's too early to tell if it'll be Nintendo's comeback, but i'd like to think optimistically that it'll prove itself fairer than the Wii U.
First impressions are clear, now we have to see how it unfolds. Metaphorically speaking.

Have you not heard of the WiiU?
Have you not heard of the WiiU?
The Wii U does not have the guts of the console inside the controller.
Have you not heard of the WiiU?
I was thinking that taking the NX away from the TV and only having one screen to work with would break things like Splatoons second screen touch controls but then I realized I do that with my Wii U all the time
whoops
Honestly if I'm going to use this I'll just get a Pro controller.
Have you not heard of the WiiU?
Or the PS Vita? :v:
Homebrew; run android; ePCSXe - Ultimate gaming platform returns.
I kind of hope it doesn't replace the DS line of handhelds, or at least comes with the option for a Wii U style second screen controller when used in stationary mode.
There are at least a few games that utilize the DS perfectly, where you need both screens at the same time and the touch controls make things much easier than if you only had buttons and analog sticks. I'd hate to see them die off or change drastically simply due to becoming physically impossible on newer consoles.
yep, i was disappointed
thanks for trying nintendo
Explain.
spam the NX
spam the nintendo
i think it looks shit. another probably underpowered console with a boring gimmick
Every single console of Ninetendos has always been "Underpowered" by the standards of the other consoles.
I'm not a nintendo guy at all, I haven't had a Nintendo console since the N64. But this is what they've always done.
As for "Gimmick" unlike with the Wii or WiiU I see no "gimmick" here
I am throwing The Hobbit under the banner of The Lord of the Rings. Read my fucking post where I said "the Hobbit was announced by that time and came out a year later", that's the Lord of the Rings hype I was talking about.
Yeah Oblivion didn't get a boost from The Lord of the Rings films because it came out 3 years after they were done. But you also have to consider that gaming wasn't nearly as popular in 2006 as it was in 2011 and that Skyrim came out when 2 huge fantasy works had brought the genre to the public's attention.
What's more likely. Skyrim sold well because the companies three previous titles sold well, or because a movie that wouldn't come out for another year was announced and Game of Thrones still wasn't popular.

Except for, you know, every console they've ever released besides the Wii and Wii U

The gimmick is pretty clearly the "console" just being a tablet you stream to your TV with controllers that split up and clip in to the tablet, there doesn't seem to be much confusion on that here. I mean razer did this years ago with the razer edge, and they even advertised it using skyrim too (which worked natively due to being an x86 tablet) but I'll reserve my judgement on the switch until more details are out and some actual games are released.

While I agree with the gist of what you're saying, the whole hybrid home console and portable thing they're doing is basically the very definition of gimmick.

Uh haha what
SNES was more versatile than Genesis
N64 was way more powerful than PS1 or Saturn
Gamecube was more powerful than Dreamcast or PS2
You wot
"console"
Handheld consoles are still consoles v:v:v

It depends. A gimmick is a cheap trick. If this is a cheap trick, then it's a gimmick. If it works, it's not a gimmick.
I honestly don't know how it'll turn out, it's interesting to me and knowing Nintendo, even without Iwata, I feel that they won't fuck up their foray into consoles, and their gameboy market. They are taking a shot at both markets at once, I can't imagine they'll shoot themselves in both of their feet.
I can see someone damaging the kickstand if they try to dock the tablet while they forgot the kickstand was out

But a gimmick isn't by default a "cheap" trick, it's simply a trick. Something new exciting or different to draw the eye to whatever you're selling, and this is definitely that.
It's like some of you people want to shit on Nintendo for the sake of it. Leave all those feces for when they give us a reason to actually be disappointed by announcing the specs and the price of the thing.
