how is this even news? does everyone just find stupid shit on the internet and use it as an excuse to post here?
Excellent first post?
:irony:
Do you really have to misunderstand every point I try to make? I was saying the iPhone is different because the OS was made to fit it. The iPad also uses iPhoneOS, but a heavily modified version of it that utilizes the bigger screen.

I'm going to go 'heavily modify' Garrysmod right now.
Please don't jump to conclusions. You really have to spend hours with one until you understand what it's all about. The bigger screen may sound like it doesn't justify the price, but the bigger screen along with the faster processor allow you to do so many more things, and allow app developers to make way more complex apps that are so much more productive than their iPhone counterparts. It's not really a productivity device as much as it is mostly for entertainment, but you could definitely use it to make Spreadsheets/Word documents on it. [editline]06:54AM[/editline] Quite the opposite. I disagree that a full-featured desktop OS should be put into a small device like that. Not only does the OS not use the touchscreen to its fullest potential, but the majority of the apps are bound to run horribly due to the insufficient hardware. The OS was made for desktops, which is what makes this different from the iPhoneOS, where it was made just for smaller devices. That's why it excels at user experience whereas a touchscreen Windows device isn't really all that great. Not to say that it's a bad device. It's not 'revolutionary,' nor does it really do anything new. It looks like a great device, though.
that's not full vista at all, it's a scaled down version meant for mobile devices.
Heavily modified meaning increasing the resolution it renders at, but leaving the actual content and aspect ratio alone?
The modifications put in place to make it utilize the bigger screen are more than just making everything bigger. You got things like HTML5 and YouTube playing within the page instead of opening the YouTube app to play. That's one of many examples. Most of the difference is noticed with Appstore apps. [editline]07:04AM[/editline]
that's not full vista at all, it's a scaled down version meant for mobile devices.
I stand corrected, but it's certainly not a new idea.

That must have taken minutes to do. I can see why the iPad isn't just a larger iPhone, but a new and revolutionary device that will change the world.
iPad is hugely misunderstood by the average nerd on FP. And of course it's just really really cool to hate Apple on the internet so that's probably where most of the negative criticism of it comes from. It's just something completely different than what we've ever had before. Normal computers require you to use different input devices and peripherals. You have to first learn to operate a keyboard, then a mouse, maybe some gamepads if you so desire. And, more often than not, it's running an operating system which is trying to be a jack of all trades and ends up being master of only a few, if any. It's always a big chain of devices strung together, rather than a single device working toward one end. iPad, however, is a featureless window to content. There is a single button. It's just a screen that you can hold, and there's no wrong way to hold it. There's no up or down, right or wrong. The screen allows you access to everything most people have ever wanted from a computer and far, far more. iPad isn't about the product, in fact, it tries to ignore itself as much as possible and tries to get the user to do so as well. iPad is all about content, and ways to interact with that content. It's a content delivery system first and foremost, and that's what most of you don't get. Normal people only use computers because they contain content they'd like to see. They'd much rather skip the computer entirely and just get the content, which is why we will still have newspapers and magazines no matter how successful the internet becomes. iPad allows users direct access to their content by offering them nothing more than a simple screen that they can intuitively interact with. Its possibilities are unlimited because all it is is a screen. Plus, for most people, it represents a jump in technology they'd usually associate with sci-fi movies. Ever since people have had imaginations, they've always wanted some sort of cool screen they could tote around that did fucking everything, accessed the internet, ran their house, gave them access to all of the content they wanted, told them where they left their car keys, etc. iPad is all that and more, just without the car keys bit, so it's 'revolutionary' to people. Yes, there have been tablets before. Yes, touchscreens are nothing new. Nothing is new about iPad, and in fact, there is never anything new about anything. Creativity isn't about making something new, it's about re-arranging old elements in new ways, and doing it right. iPad does it so fucking right I can't even stand it anymore. iPhone, by extension, is pretty much all of the above but with a smaller form factor, and if you can't recognize the significance of this kind of technology, you don't know anything about what the average person actually wants from their technology.
So they added HTML5 support to the browser, and asked Google to kindly detect the iPad browser and automatically switch to YouTube HTML5 edition? That must have taken hours to do.
No, the iPhone already had HTML5 support. YouTube still plays the regular version on the iPad/iPhone. It's just that the video can play within the video area of the screen instead of having to open another unrelated app to view it. This sometimes closed Safari to open the YouTube app, interrupting the browsing. This is a non-issue now.
...if you can't recognize the significance of this kind of technology, you don't know anything about what the average person actually want from their technology.
I know what they want. They want incredible simplicity so they never have to ask their children how to do something, or spend a minute to look it up online. And I've had one of the devices you described since 2004.

Anyone with half a brain cell can use it. As opposed to the BlackBerry OS which requires knowledge of rocket science, at least for the first couple of weeks until you finally figure it out.
And I've had one of the devices you described since 2004.
Good for you, bro. Well now everyone else has one, and it's running an operating system that uses a UI they actually like to use.
I know what they want.
You shouldn't have to ask how to do something, it should be intuitive. The point of technology is for it to work for you. We make technology to minimize the amount of work we do. What kind of sense does it make to require the user to work toward understanding how to use something that is supposed to be easy enough to understand by itself? Besides, you're missing the point of iPad. The 'taking a few seconds to look it up' bit is what iPad is all about. It's content delivery, first and foremost, and the bit that you're looking up is your content, and iPad delivers it to you better than any other device. It's like carrying around a magazine whose content is unlimited.

It's obvious.
I would really like to point out, that it was the journalist who said that the iPhone was "arguably the most significant technological device of the 21st Century"
Swipe to unlock versus 3 minute Windows boot to find a good local restaurant to dine in.
I would really like to point out, that it was the journalist who said that the iPhone was "arguably the most significant technological device of the 21st Century"
Ah, that's a relief.
Swipe to unlock versus 3 second Windows Essentials sleep return to find a good local restaurant to dine in. It's obvious.
3 seconds? Not quite. And how many hours does it last in sleep mode? No more than 20 is my bet.
3 seconds? Not quite. And how many hours does it last in sleep mode? No more than 20 is my bet.
You mean I might have to put it on the charger before I go to bed?
You mean I might have to put it on the charger before I go to bed?
No, like how many hours it would last in stand-by. Before you 'wake it up' using the supposed 3 second procedure. I know my laptop lasts like 10 hours off of the battery in sleep.
Swipe to unlock versus 3 minute Windows boot to find a good local restaurant to dine in. It's obvious.
That's stretching it too far.
I would really like to point out, that it was the journalist who said that the iPhone was "arguably the most significant technological device of the 21st Century"
To be fair, I could quite easily hear this coming from Steve himself, any day of the week.
Swipe to unlock versus 3 second Windows Essentials sleep return to find a good local restaurant to dine in. It's exactly the same.
Right, and at that point, it's about personal preference. Maybe it's just more approachable, but for whatever reason, most people happen to prefer the iPhoneOS UI. Regardless of personal preference, though, you can't deny the huge impact iPhoneOS has had in the way people think about content delivery, or at least handheld device interaction.
All I know is, the iPad's pretty cool. But is it worth a minimum of $500? FUCK no. Is it cool Apple made it $500 in the first place just because they can? FUCK no. But can they? Yup. So they will, and they have. Once it drops to $300~ I'll look into it a bit more. But I'm straight telling you all right now, anyone that buys one of those things full price either makes $200k+ a year and doesn't give a fuck, or is just plain retarded and wants the new "it" item.
^ Agreed, I don't understand why people buy iPads, when they can get an okay computer for just as much.
Pretty sure you could get like 100 CDs for an iPad????
steve jobs is a cunt (User was banned for this post ("Why reply" - birkett))
Well he is...
I can't really think of a better fucking way to say it. [editline]07:09AM[/editline] Well, that's why iPhoneOS is a hit. Anyone with half a brain cell can use it. As opposed to the BlackBerry OS which requires knowledge of rocket science, at least for the first couple of weeks until you finally figure it out.
I picked up Blackberry OS in like two minutes. Not hard. [editline]12:02PM[/editline] Also I'm pretty sure artificial hearts and livers are more important than a fucking touch screen. [editline]12:03PM[/editline] Captain Scarlet had touch screens like forty years ago.
Apple stuff isn't really that bad, it's just overpriced. I for one would definitely get an iPhone if it was a bit cheaper.
I think the iPhone is better anyway.
I find it is only a matter of time until they axe the 'iPod Touch' name and call the iTouch 4G 'iPad Nano'.
They both would've sold more if they did tablet then phone. Because then they wouldn't be calling the Ipad 'A big dumb copy of the Iphone, it would be a smaller ipad that you could take everywhere. Apple made a mistake doing this.
Never heard of it. It couldn't have been that revolutionary.
Bad marketing, it's unfortunate really. Apple know how to market shit and get away with it. [editline]04:12PM[/editline]
So the iPhone, arguably the most significant technological device of the 21st Century
Dohoho I discord good sir.
Can someone find me a replacement phone for my iPhone? I'm sick of the closed OS and don't feel like fucking with jailbreaking again because last time it made my phone not boot for about a week. I want one with a touchscreen that is just as responsive as the iPhone's touchscreen, or more responsive if there is one. Looking to be on Verizon's network as well.
I love how people claim apple are revolutionary with the app store and multi-tasking. The app store idea was ripped straight from the jailbreaking community, and multi tasking has been on previous phones for years.
