This choice makes sense. As a company a few years ago, you have the ability to make a phone or make a tablet. The most popular smartphones at that timer were BlackBerries and Treos. Tablets weren't really doing anything. Exploit the market that is needing the innovation most. The iPhone kicked phone makers in the ass to start making decent phones.
