Larger Flak Rounds such as 88MM were used back then. If they did execute this guy they probably used anything between 12.7 to 23/30MM. If he was hit in the upper torso then yes there is a good chance it was instant. Center mass probably would of resulted in him splitting in half in which he would of lived for probably a few more seconds.
