Gabe On ‘Ricochet 2′ Delay. But He Doesn’t Mean Ricochet...

He is using the codeword because they most likely haven't properly decided on a title yet. I'm rooting for Half-Life 3 though.
Maybe they've been working on a new Source engine and are crafting HL3 to show off its abilities? That's sorta what they did with HL2 and Source.
God please be this :v:
Besides they'd be crazy with not doing it, considering how big modding for HL1 was and HL2 stilll is.
graphics and scripted events have been a part of mainstream FPSes since the 90s
The Half-Life series is successful because it is a stellar example of game design, not because it is innovative (though, of course, it is.)
Timeline of FPS games for the mentally impaired(read: people who CBA to google before posting)
1993 - Doom is released and hailed as a breakthrough game for its' (for the time) revolutionary gameplay and graphics(Hee hee.) Game becomes the progenitor for a generation of similar FPS games.
1997 - Half-Life is announced, based off the Doom engine.
1998 - Half Life is released and becomes as successful as Doom was.
2000 Onwards - Deus Ex released, Battlefield series begins, Call of Duty series begins, numerous other FPS series began and games released, largely due to the success of Half-Life and Doom.
Half-life? Not innovative?

HL2 wasn't just a tech demo though, it was so much more. That is also a reason for them working on the next installment for so long - they want to make sure it is just as much a success as the two previous games.

Quake engine, not Doom.

Logic 101:
Doom used the Quake engine
Half-Life was based off the engine used by Doom(AKA The quake engine, which was, shockingly, modified slightly to fit Doom's needs)
So,
Half-life was based off the Doom engine.
So, if there were any valid points you had to make against my argument, kindly bring them up now.

I didn't mean to imply that it was just a tech demo. I just mean that they basically built Source so they could design the next installment of HL with it. It would only make sense if they made Source 2 for HL3.

My point still stands. Half-life was, and is, an innovative series, regardless of any nitpicking you may do to try and make my argument less credible.

You went through all that trouble to get your facts wrong and you didn't even get his point. Hot damn.
not because it is innovative (though, of course, it is.)
He's basically saying that while, yes, the HL games were innovative, it wasn't because of that, that they were so successful.
Yeah, I know what you mean, TF2 failed spectacularly with that nine year gap between it and the first Team Fortress.
Because everyone was sitting on the edge of their seats after the cliffhanger at the end of TFC's story, right?

rofl wasn't doom before quake anyways?
Doom is the king of FPS and the first... it couldn't have possibly have run on the "quake engine" because quake came AFTER doom, furthermore, it was originally called "Doom engine" and renamed to "id tech 1". finding this out took 10 seconds.
HL1 was based off a modded quake engine
You're also forgetting some games out there that were around HL1's time like Unreal, UT99, etc, which didn't use quakes engine, and were, at the time superiour (however gold source is arguably equal or above), Deus Ex used the Unreal Engine too.
imho HL1 was innovative but you're forgetting other things. Unreal 1 was May 1998, and HL1 was November, 1998, and Unreal 1 was also fairly innovative http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unreal#Development. Not only that, but it had scripted events as well in the game.
In what way did I get my facts wrong?
That whole thing you went to some length with about Half-Life being based on the Doom engine. If you want to get technical you also left out other hugely influential games like System Shock, or even Quake which you mentioned. The largest influence Half-Life had was the way the story and the realistic setting was handled and streamlined into the gameplay, and it made the game much more immersive, something that wasn't really explored in FPS games before.
My point still stands. Half-life was, and is, an innovative series, regardless of any nitpicking you may do to try and make my argument less credible.
So was Unreal 1
also, pong was the worlds most innovative game. Want me to continue?
Veiled ep 3 references aside, nobody is gonna really care about Ep3 when it comes out. Lots of people will buy it at first to see how it ends, but everyone who was really enthralled with the first four games is now going to be lukewarm because it's been like FIVE FUCKING YEARS. Soon as someone posts the ending on the internet, it'll be over, and so will a good portion of the sales.
HL2 took 6 years after HL1 and back then Valve was incredibly more unknown than today.
That still didn't stop HL2 from selling like hotcakes.
Y'know, despite it being the red headed stepchild of Valve I really would like to see another Ricochet game.
Yes, it was just you bouncing around Tron-land at hyperspeed while trying to kill friends via projectile physics. Can you imagine what you'd get if you took that as a base and ran in the direction of, say, Quake 3 Arena?

yeah but the fans would murder valve
Ha, I only just bothered to look Ricochet up, and it's safe to say I'll be buying that shortly, looks like good craic. Surprised I hadn't heard of it sooner :v:

Yeah, doesn't look like a game I'd exactly piss myself with excitement over, more of a "I'll play this for a few minutes at a time" game

Actually Wolfenstein 3D was the first true FPS.
and before Wolfenstein 3d was:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Catacomb_3-D
which was copied the tech demo from and released their game before:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ultima_Underworld:_The_Stygian_Abyss
And Origin which is now apart of EA, so EA is the one to take the credit for innovation.
fuck yes
i would actually buy and play a ricochet 2 if they made it
[editline]23rd April 2012[/editline]
Also, I've still got a demo CD-ROM from 1992 with the demos to Doom, Catacombs 3-D, and a whole bunch of really early games.
I don't know about you guys but Ricochet was fun as all hell when I played it. It wasn't until I started to play into tfc or day of defeat that I tried playing it again and nobody was playing Ricochet. . .
I'll be happy for Rocochet 2 or EP3.
RC2 any day! Loved the chaos.
