Totally worth it.
Not the same. At all.
I'd rather someone take all of my stuff than cut off my legs, personally
Not the same. At all.
what if someone got their car stolen and lived about 10 miles from their place of work
There are still cattle rustlers? What is this the wild west or something?

So would I, but your analogy still isn't the same. I agree that, as a one time thing, 99 years is way too much for cattle rustling. But for a guy who's done this many times? He had it coming. A better analogy would be if somebody cut off the legs of multiple people over the span of a decade, got caught in the past and continued to do it. In that case I would be perfectly happy with 99 years in the pen.

What if somebody stole thousands of cars, worth over a million dollars, from multiple people, taking away their only source of income?
I'd be calling for a fucking strict penalty. This asshole pulled this stunt multiple times, with the penalty getting more and more severe each time. If he didn't fucking learn the time he was sentenced to 20 years, then I have no sympathy for the guy.

It obviously wasn't a linear progression, considering he only only 44.
He was probably a cowboy in his past life.
I'm dependant on my legs to make a living but if someone cut them off they wouldn't get 99 years
You must live in the city. These cattle ranches are HUGE, some are bigger than Manhattan island especially one supporting 400 cows. To have your one major (and most likely only) source of income stolen away from you is bad, but now he has no income to pay his taxes, his farm hands, for his unpaid equipment, for his quota and any other expenses. These things stack up quickly and I'm sure it'd fuck him over, seeing as he probably doesn't have any protection for this. So all in all I agree with the sentence seeing how the rustler had been doing it for a decade.

I was watching a show the other day and it said some ranches here in Texas are actually bigger then rhode island.

Some ranches have entire cities within them. They got so big they just kinda ate it up.

Are you just talking about land tax, or what? Is income tax that fucked in the US?

But the state of Texas is tiny?

Texas is the second biggest state in the country.
[editline]29th August 2011[/editline]
Also, there is no state income tax in Texas.
He's got 99 years and parole ain't one.
The long sentence is probably because by stealing the cows he ruined the other rustler.
But the state of Texas is tiny?
texas is bigger than germany
This thread is now about texas
This thread is now about texas
If we were a country (again) we'd be 14th in GDP. We got the 4th biggest seaport and 4 major cities. If we could just flush the stupid we'd be pretty cool.
texas is bigger than germany
Uh, germany is tiny as well?
[editline]30th August 2011[/editline]
Wait, nevermind, I forget most places are tiny compared to Australia.
[editline]30th August 2011[/editline]
Wow there are more people in texas than Australia.
We make more money though.
I decided to look up cattle rustling in Canada's Criminal Code for shits and giggles, because everyone knows it used to be a huge deal and probably hasn't been changed in the laws.
[release]Fraudulently taking cattle or defacing brand
338.(1) Every one who, without the consent of the owner,
(a) fraudulently takes, holds, keeps in his possession, conceals, receives, appropriates, purchases or sells cattle that are found astray, or
(b) fraudulently, in whole or in part,
(i) obliterates, alters or defaces a brand or mark on cattle, or
(ii) makes a false or counterfeit brand or mark on cattle,
is guilty of an indictable offence and liable to imprisonment for a term not exceeding five years.[/release]
Oh okay we're sane
That is probably per cow. Enjoy a 2000 year jail sentence for copying this mans crime.
But seriously, wow just wow. Surely a $200,000 fine would be the answer not a 99 year sentence? Why do judges even have the ability to sentence someone to that many years in jail over what is basically just theft.
"...not necessarily in that order."
*shudder*
What the hell is the justice doing.
i love it when murderers and rapists and institutionalized criminals at the top of the financial food chain get off lighter than cattle hustlers
makes my day
have an enjoyable rest of your life, you HORRIBLE INDIVIDUAL

They would run concurrently
Considering how many Texas agriculture laws he broke, and his past offenses, this isn't surprising. Along with the increase and impact of cattle rustling, they're making an example out of him.
"I killed a man, so what you in for then?"
"Stole some cows"
Am I the only person to wonder why someone would sell 200 thousand dollars' worth of cattle to a guy calling himself "Earnest Jackson", delivery first, without so much as a down payment?
Kind of reminds me of the 1966 Batman movie where that admiral sells a military submarine to the Penguin.

what happened to my post count?
he got 99 years but a bitch aint one
Alot of people miss the point here, this is more than just "cows" Cattle are a long long term investment, you have to spend multiple years raising these cattle, picking the right genetics and all that stuff. Losing 400 cattle amounts up to quite possibly a huge chunk of your life's work and dedication being stolen from right under your nose.
Part of the reason is that he's been arrested multiple times before.
