Gmod with vastly improved physics would be a dream come true.
Fuck you shitty welds.
The chance of Valve returning to singleplayer games is as likely as Naughty Dog returning to cartoony non-cinematic games.
Half-Life 3 is most likely going to be singleplayer. They never ruled out singleplayer games, they only said right after Portal 2 that they were done with isolated singleplayer games. This could mean anything from coop to a deathmatch mode.

Think Half-Life 1, for example

If more work was put into the Bullet physics implementation, then that would be possible.

I'd say singleplayer with optional co-op of some sort.
Single-player is great, but we also have to recognize that you have friends and wanted to have that connected as well.
It's not about giving up on single-player at all. It's saying we actually think there are a bunch of features and capabilities that we need to add into our single-player games to recognize the socially connected gamer. Every gamer has instant messaging, every gamer has a Facebook account. If you pretend that that doesn't exist, you're ignoring the problems that you're taking on.
Firstly, take note that it's a Kotaku article. The title is of course sensationalist to draw as many readers as possible.
Secondly, straight from the article;
"Portal 2 will probably be Valve's last game with an isolated single-player experience," Keighley wrote in Final Hours, "What this all means is something Newell is still trying to figure out."
It's literally what I said

Ohh, I would rate myself bad reading if still could.
Gives me vibes of something along the lines of this. I wouldn't be surprised if they talked about engine physics at GDC, and showcase a small demo running on Source2.
That was groundbreaking stuff at the time too, they really paved the way for first person shooters with advanced physics and graphics.
I think it's amazing that an engine released in 2004 can still hold up with what we have today, it's limited yes but still capable of so much and still in such wide use considering when it was released.
If I hadn't already known, I'd be surprised if you were to tell me they were still privately-traded, because they conduct themselves just like all the other "AAA" investor-slaves these days.
What? They're privately owned, they're not traded at all; it's something I doubt Valve would ever give up considering Gaben has said it was paramount in letting valve become and continue being successful.
No matter how good HL3 is, it'll get poor ratings and be considered a failure. The new Duke Nukem game wasn't awful, but the same thing happened for the same reasons.
Watch as they legitimately release HL3 in an April Fools day
Valve will proabably wait untill they have finished Source 2 before making Half life 3
Half life always comes to play when valve needs to show off the capabilities of their engines

bad reading
My guess is the reason why HL3 is taking so long is because they're more worried about trying to get Source 2 up and running before they start.
You have to remember Source 2 isn't basing itself off Source and is a completely new engine and it takes time to create an entirely new engine
I almost want another Alex Gembe situation just without the massive overreaction.
I'm surprised a bunch of nerds hasn't tried it yet just to spite valve, there are more than enough idiots out there as evidenced by lulzsec and lizardsquad.
I get why so many people say things like "Half life 3 is never coming out" and actually mean it in a way, or say something like "Valve aren't the same company anyone", but i really don't think that is true at all. Sure, the wait for the next game isn't fun as it's a great series and the last game ended on a cliffhanger, but no one really seems to think about what the long wait for EP3 or whatever the next game is called now means.
It has not been almost 10 years of silence. Back in 2012 Gabe said "“Everyone who was working on Ricochet 2 continues to work on Ricochet 2.“, they've not really outright said "We're working on it" or actually properly announced the game, but they have said several times it is being worked on and why it's taking so long. Anyone who thinks they've been doing nothing with Half life for the past few years is definitely wrong, and i think anyone who thinks Valve would even do that don't fully understand what they are like. They know people want the game, they just want to do it properly, even if it that means taking their time with making it. They aren't the sort of developer to just completely abandon a series and leave it unfinished.
They've said it's taking so long because they don't want to show something and then disappoint people when they decide to change things: Half Life, HL2, EP1, EP2, TF2, L4D and Portal 2 all had fairly significant changes from what they originally showed. I think Valve taking their time with the game is a good thing, obviously i don't want to wait but i get why there's wait, and there's a good reason for it. Whatever game we get now is going to be far better than what they were going to do with the original plan. EP3 was originally just going to be a fairly short 5 hour or so episode. That wasn't going to work for some reason, so they scrapped all that and went for something different. Valve are willing to rebuild games until they are happy with them, that's a good thing; a lot of developers would just make something and just release it anyway, even though they could do far better. Because of the development taking so long the game is going to better than whatever it was going to be, Portal 2 has now expanded on the backstory for it and it is likely that the new game will be on Source 2. People also seem to forget that TF2 took almost 10 years to be released, and for most of that time they didn't say anything either but i think the game that eventually got released was worth it. They haven't completed ignored or abandoned the series, they just haven't announced the next game yet.

That's what he's saying. He knows they're a private company, but they're not acting like one.
Honestly, I kind of disagree. Valve takes many detours (the Steam box comes to mind), something you don't see other game devs/publishers do. In the case of the Steam box I don't think that's a good idea, but hey, they're raking in money, so who am I to judge.
HL3 release will take place 10 years after HL2, mark my words...

Amd Athlon 3200+ with 2GB of DDR memory and a nvidia 7800GS from gainward.
1600x1200 with 2xaa at max settings and maintained a glorious 64 FPS.

But 2014 was last year.
To me honestly, HL3/Ep3's long delay is due to the flawed ending of Ep2. To put it in a simple way, the other Half Life game's endings involves Gordon to be:
1)Put into stasis (HL1,HL2)
2)Knocked out (Ep1)
This gave dev a lot of creative freedom as they can choose where the next installment takes place to continue off since the above takes the player away from the surrounding he or she is in, hence Devs wouldn't need to constrict themselves to the surrounding around him or her and dev could easily plop Gordon into a new environment since players will have no idea what's next.
But Ep2's ending has Gordon looking over Eli's dead body with Alyx crying. Players would now know that Ep3 will take place somewhere in White Forest. And that restricted creative freedom on Devs since they'll have to work the story around the enviornment. Heck, Valve went through a similar problem when they put the teaser for Ep2 at the end of Ep1. That gave Valve creative restrictions and they'll have to work the story to fit what the teaser showed.
