It won't be incompetent, just disappointing.
Half life 3 is going to be the most massive game announcement in gaming history. And will probably hold that title for many many years to come.
Knowing valve it will probably come out of the blue one day.

for a second I didn't know you mean duke nukem forever and started to wonder what the dutch national flag problem has to do with anything
I get why so many people say things like "Half life 3 is never coming out" and actually mean it in a way, or say something like "Valve aren't the same company anyone", but i really don't think that is true at all. Sure, the wait for the next game isn't fun as it's a great series and the last game ended on a cliffhanger, but no one really seems to think about what the long wait for EP3 or whatever the next game is called now means.
It has not been almost 10 years of silence. Back in 2012 Gabe said "“Everyone who was working on Ricochet 2 continues to work on Ricochet 2.“, they've not really outright said "We're working on it" or actually properly announced the game, but they have said several times it is being worked on and why it's taking so long. Anyone who thinks they've been doing nothing with Half life for the past few years is definitely wrong, and i think anyone who thinks Valve would even do that don't fully understand what they are like. They know people want the game, they just want to do it properly, even if it that means taking their time with making it. They aren't the sort of developer to just completely abandon a series and leave it unfinished.
They've said it's taking so long because they don't want to show something and then disappoint people when they decide to change things: Half Life, HL2, EP1, EP2, TF2, L4D and Portal 2 all had fairly significant changes from what they originally showed. I think Valve taking their time with the game is a good thing, obviously i don't want to wait but i get why there's wait, and there's a good reason for it. Whatever game we get now is going to be far better than what they were going to do with the original plan. EP3 was originally just going to be a fairly short 5 hour or so episode. That wasn't going to work for some reason, so they scrapped all that and went for something different. Valve are willing to rebuild games until they are happy with them, that's a good thing; a lot of developers would just make something and just release it anyway, even though they could do far better. Because of the development taking so long the game is going to better than whatever it was going to be, Portal 2 has now expanded on the backstory for it and it is likely that the new game will be on Source 2. People also seem to forget that TF2 took almost 10 years to be released, and for most of that time they didn't say anything either but i think the game that eventually got released was worth it. They haven't completed ignored or abandoned the series, they just haven't announced the next game yet.
It's just a weird duality they've got going on - on the one hand they talk all the time about how much they value their community (and to be fair, they have been the most community-centered dev in a long, long time), but on the other hand they have a flagship series that they know everybody is waiting for, and all we get is radio silence with the occasional sideways hint that they might be doing something. It was cute at first but I don't think it's really fair - it feels manipulative and insensitive to the legion of dedicated fans who have invested so much time into the HL story
I only want HL3 so one day far into the future we'll have Gmod 2 with HD Klieners flying around.
After so many years I just hope the story becomes epic and isn't filled with holes and lazily written like most modern games nowadays.
It was also largely faked iirc
you do know these maps were leaked and you can play them
Whatever they do, they must include a revisit of black mesa in the new engine, even if that means a small part. And somehow throw in Shepard, make him canon at least.
I mean, come on, how can somebody not like the storyline and plot of Opposing Force? It's just awesome.

That radio silence must be for a reason....pretty sure that after the leak, they learned the lesson and now they won't say a single thing until its near completion

I don't think so. They've given good reasons why they haven't properly announced anything, and we know they actually are working on it; what more do you expect them to do? They can't properly announce the game because they don't want to disappoint anyone again when they change things. I don't think taking their time with a game to get it as good as it can be, meaning they'll keep working on it until they're happy with it rather than rush it out because people are waiting, in any way means they're "manipulative and insensitive". Yes, it would be great to have the game announced, but it's not as if they've said nothing about the game or something suggests it will never be released. They know people really want the game, and that's part of the reason it's taking so long; they want to do it right. Like i already said, TF2 took almost 10 years to develop and they didn't show much of it during that time, either. I'm a way it's sort of like you're saying "It's not fair that Valve take their time to make a good game, they should just forget about doing what they think is best for the series and just do what the community says instead". The game will be released when it's ready.
This probably means nothing but when I took a tour of Valve I asked if "anyone at Valve could go and see what HL3 team is up to"
The tour guy responded with something like "They pretty much keep to themselves"
So HL3 is actively being worked on by an actual team.

That's some excellent news actually, at least we know it's not in development limbo where nobody wants to work on it

I think about the day HL3 is released.

honestly I don't doubt that HL3 is being worked on.
Sure, Steam/DOTA will always be far more important to Valve (see: $$$) but they wouldn't devote so much time into Source 2 for nothing.

Maybe the same telekinetic force that pinned him against the wall also pushed too much blood away from his brain or something I dunno :v:

Hate to be the pooper of parades here, but how long ago was this?
To me honestly, HL3/Ep3's long delay is due to the flawed ending of Ep2. To put it in a simple way, the other Half Life game's endings involves Gordon to be:
1)Put into stasis (HL1,HL2)
2)Knocked out (Ep1)
This gave dev a lot of creative freedom as they can choose where the next installment takes place to continue off since the above takes the player away from the surrounding he or she is in, hence Devs wouldn't need to constrict themselves to the surrounding around him or her and dev could easily plop Gordon into a new environment since players will have no idea what's next.
But Ep2's ending has Gordon looking over Eli's dead body with Alyx crying. Players would now know that Ep3 will take place somewhere in White Forest. And that restricted creative freedom on Devs since they'll have to work the story around the enviornment. Heck, Valve went through a similar problem when they put the teaser for Ep2 at the end of Ep1. That gave Valve creative restrictions and they'll have to work the story to fit what the teaser showed.
They weren't faked per say but valve was very careful and knew exactly what they were doing when they made those tech videos. After playing the modern game and the leaked maps, a good eye can spot a lot of the tricks they used in the play through of the tech maps. The playtester they had knew a lot about te game engine an the propane was interacting with. You can see when he is shooting breakables he is aiming at precise places. For example with the wooden planks he always takes aim at the center, which is where the plank props in hl2 split into gibs iirc. This makes the breakage look much more advanced and groundbreaking than it actually is. When he picks up the metrocop to show off "complex" interactions he demonstrates and understanding of rag doll limits in the build. The turbine prop that he pushes the metrocop has a really bad hotbox, and te rag doll tends to float above it. They work around this by showing that interaction at a very high angle, but looking closely you can see the float. Other than that the barrel platform e breaks is very sketchy and doesn't like breaking unless shot in the places they do.
Te tech demo was amazing still, but there was a lot f subtle work done to make it look as impressive as it was.

keep in mind that demo came out in 2003. think of the competition at the time

It fades to black at the end of episode 2.
Valve can literally say "gordon passed out", and have him wake up on the helicopter flying over some new snowy location.
The Half Life series is built around retcons.
No matter how good Half-Life 3 or Episode 3 is, it will never live up to the hype

One day someone decides to check what they're up to. He opens the door and is met by a hundred pairs of eyes along with an ear-crushing screech, like a swarm of bats.
