Vancouver rated second worst city in North America (behind LA) for traffic congestion

I bet Seattle is a close third.
Recently I've been learning about the history of vancouver and it's "urban sprawl" that it's adopted years and years ago, back before we started our boom. It's terribly interesting to read about and learn about but looking at it, it really breaks down into Jane Jacobs versus Sullivanism. It's interesting because we've gotten this far and done so well because of Jane Jacobs style of city planning which lead to "Vancouverism". We're an incredibly livable city, but the way we've begun our sprawl has ended us here, with sky high real estate prices too high for any ordinary person to reasonably afford. But there's a serious argument amongst the city and citizens as to what Sullivanism might have done for us. Sullivanism was the idea of high rises, sky scrapers and a serious sky line for the city of Vancouver, none of this urban sprawl of thousands of cookie cutter houses, but building up, and up.
Now we're really pressed for options, and going up seems like a good idea, but the city is pretty strict on what heights it'll allow.
It's just crazy how pressed for space we really are in the West End and in the heart of Vancouver.
Building up might actually exacerbate the traffic problems, although it would seriously help the real estate prices. The problem is that once you get a higher density of people living and working in a square mile, you have a lot more cars and traffic through that square mile. It might be nice one day to increase the size of buildings, but that would have to be after effective traffic solutions are implemented.

Very true but during the mid day peak hours, vancouver has excellent alternative traffic means, and we've got bike lanes everywhere. What needs to happen is the incentive to both build up and manage traffic in the heart of the city. The city traffic really only gets bad on a few key streets and I think a few major changes in those areas would help a lot.
We do already have one of the absolute densest areas in terms of people living per square mile on the west coast

Driving in Seattle is what hell is like.
I was in Vancouver sometime last year. Coming from LA, it was really hard to tell the difference when it came to traffic.
And yet my city isn't even on the list. Good going TomTom, maybe next time start including it in your reports since there's only one news chopper in the city (and even then is only used in the morning or the 6 PM news, which indicates there may be problems with traffic sooner or later), and no publicly available traffic data on sites like Google Maps.
I live in LA. Traffic is nothing compared to New York City, fucks sake has anyone driven there? It sucks.
Well of course
That's what happens since Canada only has one road

Eh, depends on where you are. Some parts of Manhattan are a bitch almost universally, but more often than not things aren't as bad as they're hyped up to be.
I live a half-hour drive from LA. But it takes me close to three hours at times.
Freeways get clogged there almost everyday
Vancouver?
What
There are almost no traffic jams in here
I have 36 kilometers to travel via public transit twice everyday to university and back, and I spend 4 hours in transit every one of those days.
And then my teacher thinks it's super cool to have us come in for 30 minutes on a day we wouldn't otherwise need to.
