I'm guessing Chrome will open in Metro mode if you have a touchscreen enabled device. Otherwise, it opens in desktop mode. Example: My Fujitsu tablet opened Chrome in Metro by default. My MacBook with 8.1 doesn't. There is also a menu option to switch between the two.
Chrome is shit with touch, though, and the Metro application is hilariously half-assed.
Not sure if all the issues with 8.1 are fixed. So since everything working fine for me, personally I'll stick to windows 8 and not upgrade to 8.1.
That's probably because Winblows H8 is not an actual product.
What are you, 12?
Didn't Vista suck? I heard the Ultimate Edition (32-bit at least) used nearly half of its RAM capacity just at base operating levels, though that was probably years ago before patches were applied.
Afaik Vista reserved a lot of memory for it's own use for some bizarre reason, but would release it when needed. In any case, it crashed less than XP did for me.
gonna install sum w8 on all the computers at work oh how people are going to start complaining while i still use 7 on my computer :v:
Thank fuck XP is dying
And windows 8 were born with its umbilical cord wrapped around its neck.
slow down there satan
might as well also put lego bricks on their chairs And swap the labels on the sugarfree and non-sugarfree soda around.
I like Windows 8. What is wrong with me? (Although I use Start8)
Maybe I just never dedicated enough time to fix this but they removed "Open With" option from right click... You mean to tell me I need to go all the way through all the damn settings to change the default program to open ONE file, then go and change the default program back?
You sorta negated your own question there by using third-party software to solve the main flaws with windows 8.
I still don't see what the big issue with Metro actually is. With the right click menu (Or Win + X for keyboard shortcut peeps) for control panel and other administrative options, and left click for a customizable start menu, it's literally just a bigger start menu with larger buttons, except you can choose which programs to have there yourself instead of Windows picking the most used ones. I can understand if someone doesn't like it on personal preference, but saying it's a fundamental flaw doesn't sit right with me.
i don't like having the start menu taking over my screen, as i'm doing a lot of things at once i also turned off uac for the same reason

One thing that draws me away from win8 is all of the unnecessary clicks and shortcuts you need to get to basic menus.
You can pin whatever ones you want to the startmenu (and disable the recent ones) in 7 and probably earlier.
Yes I know, that isn't the point I'm trying to make. [editline]2nd January 2014[/editline]
One thing that draws me away from win8 is all of the unnecessary clicks and shortcuts you need to get to basic menus.
Right click in the lower left corner / on the start button / Win + X. Brings up this:
i don't like having the start menu taking over my screen, as i'm doing a lot of things at once i also turned off uac for the same reason
I understand that everyone has their own "thing" for using a computer. But I don't understand the taking up the whole screen argument. You can't properly multitask with the old Start Menu since it closes as soon as you interact with anything. Personally, I don't look at windows while I'm using the start menu since I'm in there for a grand total of 3 seconds while searching, and if I'm using the mouse, I'm not looking at other programs anyway. It so full screen never bugged me. The OS asking for permission to do admin tasks is so routine in Linux that UAC never bugged me, as I've been trained that "running everything as admin = bad and you should feel bad".
There is nothing wrong with windows 8.1
There's nothing wrong with it, but it's not enough an upgrade either which is kinda what you'd expect from a whole new OS. I use it on my new laptop and it's not worse, but "not worse" isn't going to make a hot seller. It seems worse at first though when you think there's no easy way to do something you used to be able to do. But the reality is, as multiple people above are pointing out, there's just new shortcuts that nobody is aware of.

Every time I click a video file or something I've forgotten to change the association to it opens in that horribly broken Metro app, which doesnt even play it half the time, then you have to scuffle about getting your desktop back (since escape doesnt always work), then again to close the fucking thing, then since Open With doesnt actually always show up, go to properties, open with and change it to a WMP (I really should install MPC/VLC, but the same goes for a lot of other bullshit like images)
Still isn't a start menu as the people are used to. Also lol telling people to change using mouse button.
To be honest I'm used to the Metro menu now.
Its pretty funny to see MS do the same thing to Xbox One that they did to Windows 8 from 7 In 360 you could push the xbox button to bring up a menu and join a party or mess with friends In Xbox one you gotta go to your dashboard go to the friends section, wait for it to load. Then invite him to the party and then go to the party section wait for that to load and then turn on the party chat. If you wanna invite a friend to a game you gotta do all that and be in a party and then go back to the game and then send a friend invite from there but it will invite everyone from your party into the game and theirs no way around it and not just individuals. They seem to think that having big overbearing UI's is the future
I used to hate Windows 8 like everyone else at first but I realized its not that bad especially since Windows 8.1 fixed the biggest problem I had with 8.0. I actually prefer this start menu over the old one now that I'm used to it.

Instead of clicking escape or whatever, click in the upper left corner - gets you to the previous app. Always works, and open with shows up when you right click? Are you saying it should open up every time you click some sort of file or what?
the problem with windows 8 is that when you use it with a touch screen, it feels fairly intuitive, but when you use it with a mouse/keyboard, you have to get used to a lot of the new functionality and kick old habits like what tobba was having a problem with and how godong explained how to fix it with a touch screen, you just swipe in from the left and SUDDENLY WHATEVER YOU WERE JUST ON IS BACK with a mouse, you have to go into the very top left and slide down to see all the currently running apps and close them that way (there isn't even a keyboard shortcut for it, iirc, whereas the charms menu has one? like what) don't get me wrong, I love windows 8, but it's designed around touch with m+kb feeling like an afterthought in certain situations

Also Win+D gets you to desktop.
Maybe I'm just an old fart, but I value usability over looks.
you're an old fart not because of that but because you think that is happening with computers and electronics

Also, the keyboard shortcut is Windows Key+Tab
The only thing I miss from Win7 is the old search through the start menu. With Windows 8, the problem seems to be people not wanting change and to adapt to it. A friend of mine despised Windows 8, got Windows 8.1 and thought it was great. The only difference he cared about was the start button that links to metro instead of the bottom left corner link. Nothing else.

Metro is completely pointless on a desktop. I run a small repair business and I have people bringing me machines asking me to get rid of windows 8 "because it's confusing".
