What a tune
Its a prothean artifact.
It's a piece from a wrapper for Martian chocolate.

Damnit Jeff
[editline]10th October 2012[/editline]
Could it simply be a piece of another craft of ours that's not fully burned up in the atmosphere? Surely with all of the satellites, landers, rovers and whatnot that we've sent there's going to be a little bit of debris happening.
Perhaps we should start treating the metal objects we send to Mars with some specific chemical or something so that on the odd chance that it doesn't burn up, we can easily identify Earth-based materials from non-Earth-based materials

A Mars bar?
Or a metal shaving.
Object Likely Benign Plastic from Curiosity Rover
Tue, 09 Oct 2012 02:49:45 PM EDT
Curiosity's main activity in the 62nd sol of the mission (Oct. 8, 2012) was to image a small, bright object on the ground using the Remote Micro-Imager of the Chemistry and Camera (ChemCam) instrument.
The rover team's assessment is that the bright object is something from the rover, not Martian material. It appears to be a shred of plastic material, likely benign, but it has not been definitively identified.
To proceed cautiously, the team is continuing the investigation for another day before deciding whether to resume processing of the sample in the scoop. Plans include imaging of surroundings with the Mastcam.
A sample of sand and dust scooped up on Sol 61 remains in the scoop. Plans to transfer it from the scoop into other chambers of the sample-processing device were postponed as a precaution during planning for Sol 62 after the small, bright object was detected in an image from the Mast Camera (Mastcam).
A Sol 62 raw image from ChemCam, at http://1.usa.gov/R1fZHt, shows the object in question just to left of center of the image.
Sol 62, in Mars local mean solar time at Gale Crater, will end at 12:23 a.m. Oct. 9, PDT (3:23 a.m., EDT).
OK so I searched 'benign' on Google images but I didn't like the results.

Benign as in it isn't going to hurt the rover.
Benign as in it isn't going to hurt the rover.
it's lucky
frankly I don't think the rover could take another round of chemo
it's probably hematite
Don't ruin my fun.
Looks like a twist tie. Just a sec guys, lemme go grab it, my cable management is bad
Source
After looking at the picture, it's definitely a piece of plastic.
God, imagine how much it would change if it turned out to be something as seemingly insignificant as an insect.

i didn't realize war of the worlds had so much funk
Benign as in it isn't going to hurt the rover.
Oh, I thought it was the name of the plastic.
I'd hope for the rover not to be damaged by that piece of plastic, since it's on frickin' Mars after all :v:
I hope Rover is still there on April 1st. Will be hilarious.
It's just some poor researchers keys that were lost into the rover during preparation.
Even if they did discover an alien race or ship of some sort, i doubt they would release it to the public.
Even if they did discover an alien race or ship of some sort, i doubt they would release it to the public.
Why wouldn't they. I mean they've released those supposed "bacteria" pictures and one time I remember a paper came up that supposedly proved that the old Viking lander had detected chemicals that indicated life right now on Mars.
All our current knowledge from alien contact comes from movies and games.

I'm pretty sure that the only reason everybody thinks something like that would be hidden by NASA/CIA/MIB/Illuminati, is because stories of government conspiracy sells. Over the years, conspiracy nuts have told so many tin-foil-hat stories that it's "common knowledge" that something like this would be hushed up.
Why would it be hidden?
Looks like a really tiny human in a spacesuit for some reason.

because a good portion of the world's people are very religious, and they would flip a fuck if they learned there's life on other planets

I bet some of the more incompetent ones will even deny Curiosity is on Mars just to keep their pride.
because a good portion of the world's people are very religious, and they would flip a fuck if they learned there's life on other planets
The existence of extraterrestrial life does not invalidate any of the worlds major religions, so there would be no reason for them to do so.
The OP picture kind of looks like gman waving to the camera wearing pink rubber cleaning gloves.
Just sayin'
It's aluminum from my tin foil hat.
Turns out its a bolt from Curiosity.
Curiosity collapses into a pile of metal shortly after and we lose contact.

I'd cry like a bitch if that were to happen. I cried when curiosity touched down, too.
That does make me wonder: what if something like that DID happen? Does Curiosity have the ability to fix itself to a degree? That would be awesome.
