Ohh man, I was just talking to my friends about it the other day. We used to play L4D and L4D2 a lot, and we were kind of sad about how few coop FPS there are. L4D3 could fill the void and maybe inspire developers to make more of these games. It may be heresy, but I might be looking forward to L4D3 more than HL3.
L4D3? Fuuuuck noooooooo! I know i'm in the minority here but L4D is the worst series valve have done to me, it just isn't that great.
For me personally L4D is one of their most boring franchises. Maybe it's because I didn't play it a whole lot co-op, but just in general there's only so many locations and characters you can add to try to spice up the same old boring Zombie Apocalypse. I don't remember any cool mods either. I can't think of a substantial thing they could add without going strictly against the formula. Then again, maybe that's exactly why they want to use it as a Source 2 showpiece, since the new engine could wow people and make them enjoy the game more than they usually would. Then again again, doesn't exactly sound like a Valve strategy. IIRC Half-Life 2 was their last big engine transition showpiece, and it certainly didn't let itself be carried by seesaw puzzles and exploding barrels.
Actually, The first proper game on the Source engine was Day of Defeat: Source. Great game, I hope for a sequel on the Source 2 engine.
I could really use that. And without people whining and moaning "Ohhh another WW2 game..."
L4D3? Fuuuuck noooooooo! I know i'm in the minority here but L4D is the worst series valve have done to me, it just isn't that great.
Wait, why?
Wait, why?
Because i don't find it that fun? I'm not saying nobody can like it, it was just my opinion. I can't be expected to like every game valve do.
I'm very much okay with this. It'll mean I finally get to play it on the PS3 or PS4 as well as with a circle of friends who will probably never get into PC gaming.
i dont care how l4d3 ends up to be if we get modding tools
I don't understand why people are butthurt on this leak, either this or an employee accidentally spilling the beans is the only way things get pushed to public announcement. I expect something to be announced next week at gamecon to overshadow or publicly announce the two.
I've always read that Valve tours are dead serious about the no cameras policy, these guys must have been some crafty dumb motherfuckers.
me and my brother literally just walked into valve offices like 3 weeks ago on vacation in washington and they gave the two of us a private tour through the entire place and the whole time i was hyper self-aware and terrified to even stop and peek in any offices, i can't imagine how someone can have the audacity to straight up defy the tour guides and a signed agreement and whip out their phone for some stupid photos

Stuff like this just makes Valve have a little less trust in the community, and each time this happens employees get a little more wary of letting people in.

In fact it's a trait in a lot of famous scientists. It's a drive to know the unkown which can get you into trouble and can be satisfying.
Actually, The first proper game on the Source engine was Day of Defeat: Source.
I hope one day they finally revisit Day of Defeat... one day...
It kind of makes sense to have L4D3 as a first Source2 game, actually. The L4D games utilize just about every core function the Source engine has, with coop/versus online multiplayer, campaign-style maps (enter this area to load next map), hitscan/projectile/throwable weapons, ammo/health pickups, voice commands, swarm/specialist AI, cutscenes and probably lots more I haven't thought of. If I were to sit down and decide a franchise to use as a first run on Source2, I'd probably go with L4D.
Because i don't find it that fun? I'm not saying nobody can like it, it was just my opinion. I can't be expected to like every game valve do.
I know how you feel, I dont like Portal or Portal 2 and I don't see how it got the massive almost cult-like fanbase it got..
that's a dick move, to take pictures of confidential emails and post them on the internet
If the e-mails were from anyone but Valve, you wouldn't be saying that. [editline]6th August 2013[/editline]
If this is true and valve announces l4d3 before hl3, I'm done. I'M FUCKING DONE.
And you're 13 years old I'm assuming. Oh the Valve Defence League have arrived already I see.
I'm actually more excited for Source 2 than any game Valve could announce.
And then everyone gets hyped and L4D3 turns out to be just a term for the port of L4D2 to the Source2 development branch for testing purposes.
I don't understand why people are butthurt on this leak, either this or an employee accidentally spilling the beans is the only way things get pushed to public announcement. I expect something to be announced next week at gamecon to overshadow or publicly announce the two.
There are good reasons Valve is so secretive about their shit besides just fearing a leak. Mainly because every time they start showing off games early, they end up being extremely different to the final product, compare E3 2003 HL2 or the leak with actual HL2, or EP2's trailer with actual EP2. They've stated they won't show off new games until they're in a state that they're sure nothing major will be changed. Which makes sense, every time the HL2 beta is brought up there's always someone that mentions how they would have preferred that version.
Imagine if L4D3 ended up being Valve's take on the DayZ-genre hype.
I wonder how big of a jump srouce 2 is going to be. I hope it'll be a lot more than just some graphics and optimization. I hope for a leap. The most annoying thing is the tiny tiny size of maps. It'd be just incredible if source 2 somehow could manage open world.
Maybe one day we will see something for Day Of Defeat... maybe..
Yaaay, L4D3, exciting, wonder how long it'll be until they abandon that aswell and leave it entirely down to the community, again.
I somehow doubt thats going to happen.
Generally speaking, Valve has a miserable time with creating DLC content for their games. TF2 is pretty much the outlier when it comes to DLC. Nothing else from the Orange Box era ever received DLC support; pre-Source 2007 games never receive any content updates; L4D1's content was more or less all ported to L4D2; and L4D2 hasn't seen many significant updates, with Cold Stream being a pretty lukewarm package. I think CS:GO and DOTA 2 are the only two other Valve games with a significant stream of DLC, and even then, a lot of their content comes from community creations (or, in DOTA 2's case, implementing missing heroes).
TF Hl2 - EP1 and ep2 are essentially dlcs Dota 2 l4d2 had a number of fairly big updates portal 2 had a number of fairly big updates as well
From what you just described, the community needs Source 2, not HL3 :v: In all seriousness I hope they release source 2 as a standalone engine kinda like UDK or CryEngine 3 and have an accessible indie dev royalty based fee of some kind.
I'm pretty sure that's how the current source engine is set up...
If the e-mails were from anyone but Valve, you wouldn't be saying that.
i don't even understand what you're trying to say this has nothing to do with it being valve, it's just a shitty thing to do in general
I can imagine the outcry if Valve released/announced L4D3 before half life 3 was released.
Honestly there's been enough time, L4D3 would be nice now.
